The Washington Post Owner Jeff Bezos to Replace Publisher Katharine Weymouth

In a 9am email to staff this morning, The Washington Post publisher Katharine Weymouth announced her imminent departure as the paper’s publisher after 7 years. Beginning October 1, Fred Ryan, formerly with Allbritton Communications and POLITICO, will be publisher and CEO.

According to The Washington Post, its owner Jeff Bezos told Weymouth on August 18th that he had selected a new publisher.

In an interview with the outlet he’ll now lead, Ryan said that he does not have plans to replace executive editor Martin Baron or editorial page editor Fred Hiatt.

The Washington Post was bought by Weymouth’s great grandfather in 1933 and sold to Bezos in August 2013. In her email, Weymouth said that she will offer Ryan and the Post support as an advisor through the end of 2014.

Wash Post Partner Program Offers Digital Content to 100 US Newspapers

Subscribers to newspapers throughout the country now have access to The Washington Post digital products through a partner program launched earlier this year. Nearly 100 local and regional papers have signed on in an effort to expand the Post’s reach across desktops, mobile websites, and phone and tablet apps.

Participants include the Honolulu Star Advertiser, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and the Denver Post.

WaPo Reporters Meet in Secret

Against a backdrop of buyouts and plummeting circulation and a disappointing Pulitzers outcome, a group of prominent WaPo journos met secretly at the Bethesda mansion of Bradley Graham, a former WaPo reporter, to talk to Steve Hills, president and general manager of the newspaper. Adweek has the story this morning. The meeting transpired on April 17.

Although the 10 or so journalists who attended agreed not to talk about the meeting, Adweek‘s Lucia Moses got someone yapping. Hills is one of three WaPo employees quoted in the story. He downplayed the importance of the meeting. The others: Executive Editor Steamed Marcus Brauchli and WaPo Ombudsman Patrick Pexton, neither of whom attended the apparently not so hush-hush meeting.

As the magazine states, if the goal was to get assurances that there would be no more cuts and to convince Hills that the newsroom needs more to produce the high-quality journalism and investigations it’s known for, they left disappointed. Question swirled around the fate of the investigations unit, a permanent group started by Bob Woodward in 1982 and a crown jewel of the paper.

Brauchli insists he is committed to investigative journalism and will not dismantle the unit. Pexton spoke of newsroom pressure to pick up the pace of reporting.

WaPo Re-org: The CliffsNotes

Yesterday, WaPo Media President and General Manager Steve Hills treated staffers to a PowerPoint deck and novella memo that outlined the company’s organizational changes for 2010.

The very long and detailed email (after the jump) announced seemingly minor rearrangements of the current org chart, a few promotions and a couple new roles. My 15 sec. summary:

Gregg Fernandes was promoted to Vice President, Circulation. The Marketing Managers, who support WaPo’s Advertising business, will report to a newly created role – Director, Advertising Marketing. That position will be filled by an existing Marketing Manager and will report to Ken Babby, VP, Advertising. Mike Shenk and his team, Marketing Creative Services, will join Advertising Operations. David Jones and the Community Relations team now report to Kris Coratti, Director, Public Relations. Laura Evans will take on an expanded role of Director, Marketing Research and Analytics as she assumes responsibility for the Digital analytics team and Nick Findlay will assume a new role as the Director, Retention Marketing.
