Memo to CNN: Free Ali Velshi!

Throughout the relentless storm last night, reporters in Washington and beyond expressed deep concern for CNN’s breakout star, Ali Velshi, who spent much of the day and night knee and waist deep in water. On his birthday, no less. At one point shirtless pranksters joined him in the water. TVNewser has the video. Let’s hope the network gave him a change of clothes.

“Ali, I’m glad to see you in one piece, quiet frankly,” remarked CNN’s Soledad O’Brien to Velshi early this morning in an interview with the correspondent who appeared to be in the exact outfit he wore last night — dark sports pants, red pullover, sneakers, baseball cap.

“CNN, please let Ali Velshi live.” — HuffPost‘s Sam Stein.

“I’m going to collect donations to help Ali Velshi with what is undoubtedly a serious case of swamp foot. #aliisahero#10hoursinthewater.” — Will Cain, CNN Contributor and columnist for TheBlaze.com.

“Why is CNN having Ali Velshi standing in the middle of a barren intersection?” — CNBC and NYT‘s John Harwood.

“Dear CNN, et al: get your reporters out of the water. You look stupid.” — NationalReviewOnline Contributor Greg Pollowitz.

“Now CNN is making Ali Velshi stand in the hurricane during a commercial break so they can come back to him afterwards. Amazing.” — Washington City Paper Editor Mike Madden at 4:14 p.m. At 10:30 p.m. Madden added, “CNN, seriously. You have tortured Ali Velshi enough. Whatever he’s done, he will never do it again. Let him go inside.”

“I’ve concluded that Ali Velshi has the world’s strongest legs, and a brilliant sound man.” — CNN’s Piers Morgan.

“ALI WE GET IT. IT’S BAD OUT THERE.” — Politico‘s Kate Nocera (who couldn’t get away from all-caps messages throughout the night.)

“I really want to hear Chris Christie’s reaction to what Ali Velshi is doing right now.” — NPR Elections Producer Arnie Seipel.

“Amazing reporting by Ali Velshi from Atlantic City under terrible conditions. (It’s also his birthday.)” — CNN Senior Digital Producer Steve Krakauer.

“Why can’t CNN just put a hologram of Ali Velshi in the middle of all that water?” — Blake Hounshell, managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine.

“I’ve never had a desire to stand in the middle of a storm to tell someone else not to come outside. I can do that from a studio! LOL” — CNN Contributor Roland Martin.

A RELAXED ROLAND: “Somebody’s tuckered out.” — Video journo Liz Glover with accompanying photograph of CNN Contributor and TV ONE’s Roland Martin.

“I’m already all shook up. In anticipation. Brand new tissue box: check.” — author Terry McMillan during the speeches last night.

A little too gushing?

“Biden is one of the best liked people in politics — on both sides. And he has earned that affection. #CNN” — CNN’s David Gergen. At a time when CNN is trying to paint MSNBC as too in love with Democrats, this was a peculiar thing to say.

Humblebrag: Rosario grabbed my Snickers!

“Hey! @rosariodawson just grabbed my last Snickers. What a great way to end the great @ABC/ @YahooNews convention coverage.” — ABC News Producer and Digital Journalist David Meyers.

The Team Player

“Partisan people on both sides seem to not like when their side gets fact-checked, but love when the other side does. CNN fact-checks both.” — CNN Piers Morgan Tonight staffer Steve Krakauer.

Do they think he stinks?

“Street vendors selling Obama air fresheners. I kid you not.” — WaPo‘s Chris Cillizza.

The Speeches. Kerry. Biden. Obama.

Sen. John Kerry

“Punditry correction: predicted that Senator Kerry would flop. Was wrong.” — BuzzFeed‘s Michael Hastings.

“ROCKY IV DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE A PARTISAN PUNCH LINE. SHAME ON YOU” — a uncharacteristically dramatic HuffPost‘s Sam Stein.

“John Kerry’s speech was so good, this entire arena is fired up, ready to go avenge Apollo Creed’s death.” — NJ “The Hotline” Polling Editor Steve Shepard.

Veep Joe Biden

“There is literally no heaven.” — NY Daily News’ Josh Greenman.

“It’s about healing. And putting a bullet between the bastard’s eyes.” — David Frum.

“I think Joe Biden looks FAB in his infomercial. I also like his voice. See, I said something nice!” — Conservative radio host Laura Ingraham.

“My Dad is live-blogging Biden’s speech to me via text… Never should’ve gotten him that iPhone.” — Yahoo! News‘s Chris Moody.

“Joe Biden loves him some ‘literally’. Literally. #dnc2012″ — WaPo‘s Chris Cillizza.

“Joe Biden is off to a really personable start with all the kiddos. snff snff” — HuffPost‘s Christina Wilkie.

President Obama

“Obama not just criticizing GOP. He is mocking them, again and again.” — The Hill‘s Managing Editor Bob Cusack.

“I’m not only the Hair Club president, I’m also a client.” — WaPo‘s Felicia Sonmez.

“Time for Biden to rush out shirtless in pirate garb swallowing a torch of fire.” – TV pundit, blogger, author Craig Crawford.

“I am bored to death. #figuratively” — Reason magazine’s Nick Gillespie.

“Crowd definitely not as jazzed either. Better than in Tampa, though, where the noise died within about 30 seconds of Romney’s speech ending.” — Times of London‘s Matt Spence.

“Is it just me, or are the applause lines falling much flatter than I presume he intended?” — Townhall‘s Kate Hicks.

“If This doesn’t pick up soon, the obituaries are going to start flowing. I give it 10 more mins before the impression is locked.” — Mediaite‘s Noah Rothman.

“Four more beers.” Slate‘s Dave Weigel.

“Obama says he’s mindful of his own failings. I wish we could hear his honest discussion of what he could have done better.” — NYT‘s Jodi Kantor.

On another note…“Joe Biden’s daughter’s dress is AWESOME. #notapoliticalstatement” — Politico producer Leigh Munsil.

And what’s a night without a little media bashing? “Even MSNBC is looking disappointed tonight. Though they are trying to cover it up. But you can see the heartache in their eyes.” — Breitbart.com editor Jon Nolte.

The Sea Has Finally Parted

“Psst, journos: conventions are OVER. Sleep cometh soon! #DNC2012 #GOP2012 — WaPo manager of social media & engagement Natalie Jennings.

Journo gets emotional about FLOTUS’s seating

“Not sure if I find it heartening or depressing that Michelle Obama appears to be sitting on the same hard plastic chairs the press is.” – LAT political writer Matea Gold.

A shout-out for the FGOTUS

“I love the first grandma, Mrs. Robinson seems so dope.” — Myles Miller, a political reporter.

Reporters get props from questionable character

“Wow. There is a legit meth head wandering around the press filing room thanking reporters for their work. #dnc2012″ — Business Insider political reporter Grace Wyler.

Unnecessary Tweet of the Day

“I am on Twitter silence until POTUS speaks at 10ish. I gotta get some stuff done so I can watch and hear his every word.” — Essence and theGrio‘s Sophia Nelson.

Morning Chatter

Quotes of the Day

Tense newsroom phone call

“From overhearing one side of @michaelschaffer’s phone call, sounds like Washington Post is unhappy about this.” –WCP‘s Mike Madden, who linked to this story about a certain detail they say WaPo blatantly missed. WaPo‘s Vernon Loeb, meanwhile, claims it was a matter of emphasis.

Whoa! Politico‘s Bresnahan joins Twitter?

“Is he aware Twitter is not a snack food?” — Roll Call‘s Paul Singer initial (joking) reaction to Politico‘s Capitol Hill warlord John Bresnahan joining Twitter. He soon added, “Kidding aside, you should follow .@brespolitico. There is no reporter in DC I respect more.” So far, Bresnahan hasn’t tweeted a single message. Stay tuned…

Politico teaches Wemple art of self-congratulation

“There’s a brighter side, however, and it relates to Politico’s clever twist of logic-in-service-of-self-congratulation. If the paper can say it’s the No. 1 preference of Washington readers among four competitors, then I can say I’m the No. 1 tennis player in the world among my closest friends. Thanks, Politico! ” — WaPo Erik Wemple‘s take on a new Politico ad in which they claim they are the most read paper on Capitol Hill among The Hill, CQ Weekly, NJ and Roll Call.

From the Road

“Restaurant next to my Jacksonville hotel called The Tilted Kilt, which hotel manager discouraged, calling it a ‘Scottish Hooters.’ Oh.”– CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight” Senior Digital Producer Steve Krakauer.

Investigative reporting at a glance…

Good Morning FishbowlDC Readers

QUOTES of the DAY: THE WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER EDITION

The Daily Beast Columnist Meghan McCain poses on the red carpet. Sure she looks good here, but late yesterday she described herself like this as she hung out with her West Hollywood-based hairdresser, Josh Rupley, at Dulles: “The nicest way to describe how @joshrupley and I look like at Dulles right now, is a busted up Britney and KFed – circa 05, Starbucks style.”

Sign that the WHCD is becoming less about the Correspondents? Try ‘Correspondence’

“The president’s comedic chops and Seth Meyers routine must be posted on you tube by now try White House Correspondence Dinner.” — Oprah Radio host and Oprah BFF Gayle King in a weekend tweet.

Krakauer unknowingly outs himself as C-SPAN watcher

“…just realized I revealed I’m sitting at home on a Saturday night watching C-SPAN. #whcd” — CNN “Piers Morgan Tonight” Digital Producer Steve Krakauer in a weekend tweet. Just before, he referenced a Piers Morgan interview from President Obama‘s WHCD speech, writing, “Obama just referenced Matt Damon’s jab at him during his @PiersTonight intvw. Fires back with Adjustment Bureau slam. #WHCD.”

WHCD bonding

NBC Congressional Correspondent Luke Russert brought what he called his “man date” Buffalo Bills Wide Receiver Terrell Owens to the WHCD. They apparently bonded. Russert wrote, “So @TerrellOwens and I are trying to figure out best phrase to describe what happened to Trump, we agree on ‘pummeled.’”

Washington Vs. Hollywood Hair

“Hollywood men have very pointy hair.” — Bloomberg TV‘s Lizzie O’Leary in a weekend tweet. To which The Takeaway’s Congressional Radio Correspondent Todd Zwillich remarked, “Washington women have very straightened hair.” These observations rang true if you saw Juke Kartel’s lead singer Toby Rand at the WHCD this weekend. The spiky dark-haired rocker was in town with his band to perform at Lanmark Technology Prez Lani Hay‘s private after party Thursday night. The comments, meanwhile, defied reality for anyone who saw Politico‘s Amie Parnes‘ Amy Winehouse beehive do at Tammy Haddad‘s garden party that shocked and awed fellow partygoers.

No Trump sighting post dinner

“Trump sat stone faced in audience, left quickly after WHCA dinner. No Trump sightings today at after party brunches. Heading home.” — CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux in a weekend tweet. Gayle King suggests why Trump may have fled the scene. She wrote, “Pres Obama and Seth had fun at Donald Trump‘s expense at White House Corrrespon [sic] dinner they were hilaaarious and he was NOT happy.”

The popped collar interview

“I’d like to think she liked my double-popped collars.” — Politico‘s Patrick Gavin in a weekend tweet referencing his interview with Sarah Palin at Haddad’s garden party.

Anti-Seth Meyers ranting…

“Tell me if I’m wrong, but I think Seth Meyers was really simple and mean-spirited last night. Such a crappy, pseudo-elitist, hyper-critical style of comedy. I hate it. Really reflects poorly on SNL, too.” — Microsoft’s Director of Innovative Engagement for the U.S. Public Sector Mark Drapeau in a Sunday Facebook update.

Red Carpet Hell

“My feet are going to be bloody stumps for nothing.” — An annoyed female reporter covering the red carpet at Capitol File‘s WHCD after party at the Ronald Reagan Building. Reporters covering the event waited at least two and a half hours for “stars” to show up. They included a variety of unknown models with breasts popping out of their dresses along with decently big names like Jeremy Piven, Patricia Arquette, David Arquette and Alyssa Milano. The same nameless female reporter said earlier as one of the unknown models strode by, “Who the hell is this? Every year it gets worse and worse. I’m sorry, I’m cynical.”

Good Morning FishbowlDC Readers

QUOTES of the DAY

D.C. blogger chills out in Caribbean

“Last full day and night in http://www.mustique-island.com/ then back to cold and real life!”–Washington/LA “Pamela’s Punch” blogger Pamela Sorensen in a Monday tweet. She’s traveling in Mustique, an island in the southern Caribbean.

More importantly: Coburn’s beard is gone

“Am very disappointed Sen. Coburn decided to shave. Come on senator! The facial hair caucus needs more members.” — NBC’s Chuck Todd in a Monday morning tweet on Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.).

Less importantly: Coburn ‘disgusted’ by media

“I’ve pretty well been disgusted by all the media, right and left, after this episode,” Sen. Coburn declared Sunday on NBC’s MTP.

Networks and outlets compete for preconception

“..Americans increasingly customize their information, picking up radically different perspectives from whichever sources they trust – Fox News or MSNBC, Newsmax or Huffington Post. There is very little shared experience in the nation now; there are only competing versions of the experience, consumed in such a way as to confirm whatever preconception you already have, rather than to make you reflect on them.”– NYT writer Matt Bai in a Sunday “Week in Review” piece.

Not sex, Twitter followers

“Just joined the Mile High Club…by which I mean thank you to my 5280th follower.” — TPM‘s Brian Beutler in a suggestive weekend tweet.

Buttry gets anal

“Even I am not anal enough to fix the typo in my last tweet when it was the night before (but still anal enough to let you know I noticed).” — TBD‘s Community Engagement Director Steve Buttry in a sequence of words we’re sure he intended due to his surname. The stinging mistake? “Excellent piece on violence, not viokent rhetoric.” (Considering the sensitive nature of his weekend — “I just had blood drawn and spat into a tube to contribute DNC for a genetics study” he wrote, citing leukemia and MDS in loved ones as the reason — we hope things went as well as possible.)

Blind quote…

“And Pareene? What a d–k…” — A longtime D.C. journo remarking on Salon’s Alex Pareene after we published this item late last week.

Reporter contemplates tattoo

“I wonder what kind of tattoo I should get now that my story assignment has been changed to the DC Tattoo Expo.” — ABC7 Reporter Mike Conneen in a weekend tweet. Conneen told FishbowlDC that he never wound up with one. “I’m still tattoo-free,” he DM’ed me. “But I did get a free bottle of sea salt nasal spray. …Apparently it has some connection to sea salt moisturizer and other products for new tattoos.”

WaPo’s correction of a correction

“Classic: WashPost correction today says that the paper misspelled the Washington Capitals as the ‘Capitols’ in a previous correction.” — U.S. News & World Report‘s Paul Bedard in a Monday morning tweet.

Scribe meets Roller Derby

“First time I’ve ever been to a roller derby. This is pretty cool, though I have no idea what’s going on or who’s scoring.” — NJ “The Hotline’s” Executive Editor Reid Wilson in a weekend tweet.

Journo’s fantasy is shattered

“Just was FB friended by someone named Lani Anderson. For a sec, I thought it was Loni Anderson, and that my boyhood dream had come true.” — former TBD GM and digital consultant Jim Brady in a recent tweet. (This one fell through the cracks. It’s from last week.)

NBC reporter claims he handled White House snack drawer

“Hey @savannahguthrie @chucktodd @athenajones let the record reflect that on 1-15-11 @ 1641 viq did replenish the snack drawer in WH booth” — NBC’s Mike Viqueira in a weekend tweet.

The Sweet’N Low Police

“Well-dressed old woman trying to steal sweet’n low at my local deli. ‘They fell!’ she says, when caught. They didn’t fall.” — Digital Producer for CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight” Steve Krakauer in a weekend tweet.

Tschida is so ‘DOPE’

“Photographer keeps calling me DOPE! but kinda weird. Think it’s a term of endearment. Seems to be enjoying himself. laughing a LOT!” — ABC7′s wild train rider Stephen Tschida in a tweet from last Friday.

Weird coincidence

“‘Restaurant critics pay in cash,’ the stranger next to me at lunch tells her friends — just as I’m peeling off twenties for my meal.” — WaPo‘s Food Critic Tom Seitsema in a Friday tweet.

Unnecessary Tweet of the Day

“Buying thinner socks so I don’t have to go home and change. #tbdnight” — (M. Rumsey i.e. xmattiusx) in a weekend tweet. (A shining example of why local journalism is working so well.)

Steve Krakauer, senior editor of Mediaite.com, has been named digital producer of CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight,” set to debut in January 2011.
> Update: Krakauer remarked to FishbowlDC: “I have loved working on this side of the business, covering the TV and media world of Mediaite and previously at TVNewser, but this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
Howie Snails on Juan

Puzzling. Howard Kurtz leaves WaPo for the fast-paced world of digital journalism and turns in his ex-NPR canned Juan Williams write-up for The Daily Beast some 14 hrs after it happened.

Noteworthy: Kurtz’s second story on Williams appears this morning on CNN.com, complete with an Editor’s note that has him as host for CNN’s “Reliable Sources” (correct) and as “media reporter for the Washington Post” (so weirdly wrong – he’s at The Daily Beast and is no longer at the Post or this story might have appeared there).

Mediaite‘s Steve Krakauer cracks on Kurtz for his snail’s pace. He writes on Twitter: “Dude you’re 15 hours late RT @HowardKurtz My Beast take on NPR firing Juan Williams. Boy… those Beasties get stories up fast.” And Mediaite‘s Glynnis MacNicol remarks, “Welcome to the Internet?”

ABC News Buyouts to Hit Tomorrow

On the tail of CBS News’ recent round of layoffs, hundreds of ABC News employees are expected to be offered buyouts tomorrow morning. A source familiar with the situation tells FishbowlDC that the buyouts will hit the Washington bureau as well.

Mediaite reports that the buyouts are expected to be offered to employees both on and off-air.
Journos are Crazy for Candy

Journalists around town are giddy about CNN’s Candy Crowley, the newly announced host of the network’s Sunday morning show, “State of the Union.” She’s the only woman in a Sunday morning anchor chair. She’s the only woman to ever host the show.

Crowley told Mediaite’s Steve Krakauer that she and current host John King are very different creatures.: “…it’s going to be organic and we’re doing it on the fly, obviously because I’m going to be in the seat next Sunday. I think that our interview styles are different. I’m more of a laid-back sort of interviewer. …I’m more casual in some ways. Journalists go after news, what’s important. I don’t know how I would make that my own, but management made it really clear they don’t want Candy to do John’s show, they want Candy to do Candy’s show. So we’ll see. Hopefully it will include some writing, some journalism I did during the week. Because I will be keeping my day job.”

Read the full Mediaite interview here.

Mother Jone’s David Corn had a “no comment” tweet on a comment from @pourmecoffee: “Congrats to Crowley. I repeat my wish she marry @DavidCornDC, become Candy Corn & embrace it like a Superhero.”

CongressDaily’s Erin McPike tweeted on Sunday: “Thrilled Candy Crowley got CNN’s State of the Union. Good for CNN!”

The Washington Examiner’s “Yeas and Nays” also wanted some Candy. “All people that whacked the weeds of the forest so that I was able to walk,” Crowley said of landing her new position.

Sunday Show Wrap-Up: Obama-Rama

Embedded video from CNN Video

• Above, on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” yesterday, Howard Kurtz discussed, among other topics, President Obama’s five-Sunday-show-blitz with WaPo‘s Chris Cillizza, conservative commentator Amy Holmes and St. Petersburg Times‘ Eric Deggans.

• More from Kurtz in WaPo‘s Media Notes “Saturation Sunday“: “”Anytime is a good time to interview the president,” says “Meet the Press” host David Gregory. “We’re here to get news,” says “Face the Nation” host Bob Schieffer. But sharing the same guest — even the world’s top newsmaker — makes it harder for them to distinguish their programs.”

• Baltimore Sun‘s David Zurawik‘s Z on TV “President Obama: A weak Sunday TV blitz”

• Also from Mediaite: “Obama’s Magical Media Tour: Who Had The Best Interview?” (Spoiler: Steve Krakauer says CNN’s John King.)

• WSJ‘s Peggy Noonan called President Obama’s Sunday show blitz “boorish” in a roundtable discussion on ABC’s “This Week.” “He’s doing it because he can,” the former speechwriter told host George Stephanopoulos. “The media environment allows a modern leader to be something subtly damaging, and that is boorish. They get their face in your face every day all the time. It’s boorish and it makes people not lean toward you but lean away from you, no matter what the merits of the issue.” (h/t HuffPost)

• A few lighter moments on the Sunday talk show circuit… just before Tom DeLay‘s debut tonight on “Dancing with the Stars,” Gregory asked House Minority Leader John Boehner whether he has a future on that show. Boehner replied, “I’ll pass.” And on CNN, “State of the Union” anchor King played a clip of James Carville getting spoofed on Thursday’s SNL. Weekend Update called the CNN Democratic strategist “skeletor,” and his wife, CNN Republican strategist Mary Matalin came to his defense- “I love this look.”

• Also, this Sunday CNN aired a response to Fox News’ print ad in newspapers Friday. CNN’s response ad says “Fox News, Distorting not Reporting.” Check out Fox News’ print ad and CNN’s video ad (via Media Matters) after the jump…

We told you yesterday about Air America’s interview with Todd Purdum. If you missed it, you can listen online here. Purdum discussed Palin’s unpredictability, her lack of curiosity and her “casual” relationship with the truth, all characteristics that came out in last fall’s presidential campaign, and gained traction in recent days as she announced her resignation. As Purdum told Air America’s Jack Rice, “She really is willing to say that black is white and day is night.”

In Sunday’s WaPo, the aunt of a solider killed in Afghanistan on the same day as Michael Jackson decried the lack of TV news coverage for the soldiers as the media went in to overdrive on the Jackson story. She wrote: “Mr. Jackson received days of wall-to-wall coverage in the media.
Daily Finance “Obama takes on Fox News, loses“: When is Barack Obama going to learn that presidents shouldn’t play press critic? It didn’t work for Richard Nixon. It didn’t work for Bill Clinton or George W. It didn’t help John McCain win the White House, and it won’t help Obama, who vented his frustration with Fox News Wednesday.

CNN’s keeping tabs on WH Press Secretary Robert Gibbs‘ tardiness. “Gibbs was a total of 13 hours and 46 minutes late to his own press briefings in the month of May alone. Of the 19 briefings held by Gibbs in May, the White House officially pushed the scheduled start time back 14 times (although: one time they actually made it earlier.) That averages out to a delay of roughly 28 minutes a day – a total of 8 hours and 50 minutes for the month.”

There was speculation yesterday that President Obama would make a surprise appearance in Gibbs’ daily press briefing. When he didn’t, a few reporters were left disappointed, including CBS’ Mark Knoller.
Changes Coming At FishbowlNY

FishbowlNY’s Glynnis MacNicol‘s last day is next Tuesday…

Today marks my one year anniversary at FishbowlNY. Hard to believe. This time last year the great media demise of 2008/9 was mostly just a panel discussion of the “how should we prepare for this down the line” variety. And had anyone informed us then what was to come — the fearful Friday layoff news, the shuttering of so many good magazines, the dominance of Twitter — I’m not sure any of us would have believed it.

It has been quite a ride here at FishbowlNY, but the time has come for me to move on. Next Tuesday will mark my last day as a mediabistro.com blogger. Suffice it to say I have learned a lot from my time here, and I am immensely grateful to both Laurel Touby and Rebecca Fox for giving me the chance to occupy this space for the last 12 months (also to Steve Krakauer for letting me occupy his podcast space!). Also to all of you. That said, should any of you want to give it whirl over here, we are hiring!

NEWPAPERS

Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) introduced a bill yesterday to save newspapers. The legislation would allow newspaper companies to restructure as nonprofilts with a variety of tax breaks. A Cardin spokesman tells Reuters the bill had yet to attract any co-sponsors, but had sparked plenty of interest within the media, which has seen plunging revenues and many journalist layoffs.

The Chicago Tribune and LATimes are combining their international reporting operations as their corporate parent tries to save money while reorganizing in bankruptcy court. The international cooperative, to be based in Los Angeles, will serve all newspapers owned by the Tribune Co.

A “historic” memo from managing editor Robert Thomson to WSJ has left some feathers ruffled, according to Portfolio.

TV

Howard Kurtz on the President’s presser, Mr. Cool, Budget-in-Chief: “Obama generally spun long paragraphs, in that even-keeled way of his, rather than delivering a Reaganesque or Clintonesque one-liner that can deflect or defuse a question. Only once did he deliver a sharp rejoinder, when Henry pressed him on why it took him days to express outrage about the AIG bonuses. ‘I like to know what I’m talking about before I speak,’ the president said.”

WaPo’s Tom Shales‘ review here. “Most of the facets of President Obama’s personality that have made him intensely popular were on display last night during his second prime-time news conference, and so he emerged from it still every inch ‘President Wonderful,’ a itt were, untouched and intact.”

Playbook notes Ezra Klein: “Some press corps. I managed to miss it, but the transcript suggests that there wasn’t A SINGLE QUESTION about the massive plan to risk a trillion dollars in taxpayer money to save the banking system. But The Washington Times managed to ask about stem cells. WTF, press?” Also check out Playbook for a “speed read” on the presser.

President Obama delivers– ratings for CBS’ 60 Minutes. Steve Kroft‘s interview this Sunday drew 17.04 million Total Viewers, 60′s best ratings of 2009.

Will CNN launch a wire service this year? At a National Press Club event this week, CNN President Jon Klein said the networks has been talking to newspaper editors and tv and radio owners and that they’re “seeing some early interest.”

Larry Kudlow announced on CNBC yesterday evening that he is not running for US Senate. From HuffPost: “It was a flattering conversation and one that I thought about, but to me it was never really a serious proposition… This evening, I’m letting the world know that I am not running for the US Senate, and here’s why: in my heart I know that I belong right here at CNBC… This is my love.”

Politico caught up with CSPAN founder and CEO Brian Lamb, who just celebrated the 30th anniversary of the network. It’s very gratifying to know the program is touching so many people,” Rehm says.

ONLINE

Andrew Breitbart has been Matt Drudge‘s little helper for more than a decade. But he’s told people that he’s no longer doing regular shifts at the Drudge Report, and hasn’t been for nine months or so. Who are editors going to go to for links now? And can Drudge really do it all by himself?

From Politico, Obama seeks filter-free news: “At a time when his Washington honeymoon is turning into a hazing, President Barack Obama and his team are launched on a strategy to sail above the traditional White House press corps by reaching out to liberal commentators, local reporters and ethnic media… But those moves are only part of a much larger strategy aimed at communicating directly with audiences the White House believes are more sympathetic to the president’s agenda – and one in which much of the work is being done by Obama’s top advisers.”

Full circle: the Times-Picayune reports that the TSA has cleared Senator David Vitter (R-LA) on the aforementioned airport gate incident.
