Add MJ Lee to List of POLITICO Departures, Joins CNN Digital Politics

20140813js_mj_lee_005You can add MJ Lee to the growing wave of POLITICO reporters and editors who’ve been poached by CNN Digital Politics.  For those of you counting, Lee makes 5… Rachel Smolkin, Steven Sloan, Jedd Rosche and Eric Bradner all switched teams this fall.

“It’s as if Rachel built an arc and we’re following her two by two,” said a former POLITICO staffer turned CNNer who asked to remain anonymous.

But they’re not just flooding (pun intended) to CNN. MJ is the fourth POLITICO exit announced this week.  Alex Burns, Gregg Birnbaum and Dan Berman all jumped ship for gigs at new outlets in the past few days.  Sounds like a trend.  As for MJ, her hire was announced today via internal memo obtained by FishbowlDC.  See the note from Rachel Smolkin and CNN Money’s Lex Haris after the jump. CNN Digital Politics Hires Metzler from U.S. News

unnamed2

The digital hiring spree in CNN’s Washington bureau continues today with news that Rebekah Metzler will exit U.S. News & World Report for a gig at CNN. Currently a senior news editor, Metzler will take the role of breaking news editor for CNN Digital Politics.

For those of you counting, Metzler is CNN Digital Politics’ 200,698th hire in the past two months. I kid. But it seems that way, no?

Since poaching Politico‘s Rachel Smolkin and naming her executive editor this summer, the network has really been bulking up their digital team. You may recall that in addition to Smolkin, CNN snagged three more from Politico – Steven SloanJedd Rosche and Eric Bradner.  They also made big name hires like Chris Moody from Yahoo!, Ashley Codianni from Mashable and Stephen Collinson from AFP, as well as reporters and digital producers from WaPo, The Hill and C-SPAN.

RIP CNN’s Political Ticker

CNN’s executive director of CNN Politics Digital Rachel Smolkin today announced the end of the CNN Political Ticker after eight years of political coverage to the site.

Smolkin wrote in the Ticker’s final post, which will cease to exist come Wednesday:

“The Political Ticker blog died of old age on Oct. 13, 2014, after eight years of faithful service to CNN’s readers.”

“The Ticker began quietly in October 2006, fueled by a realization that a blog could capture and influence the political conversation. It hit 1 million page views during CNN’s 2006 election coverage a month later, and in its heyday became one of the most trafficked forums in political media.”

“But over the next seven years, the Ticker remained static as the media landscape transformed around it. Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram allowed political journalists to reimagine their storytelling, and the media world placed new emphasis on writing with personality and edge.”

Two More POLITICOs Join CNN Politics Digital

cnndigital‘Three reporters in the same day? Really?’ is probably what’s being thought right now by someone at POLITICO.

Earlier today we wrote about POLITICO Pro trade reporter Eric Bradner joining CNN Politics Digital as a reporter for its breaking news team. Well just hours later, HuffPost’s Michael Calderone reports two more POLITICO-ers are set to join CNN.

Steven Sloan has been named assistant managing editor for enterprise reporting for CNN Politics Digital while Jedd Rosche was named breaking news editor. Sloan served as POLITICO’s Congress editor and Rosche was the outlet’s deputy breaking news editor.

Sloan and Rosche, in addition to Bradner, join CNN executive director of Politics Digital Rachel Smolkin, who was – in July – also hired from POLITICO.

POLITICO Promotes Rachel Van Dongen to Deputy Managing Editor

Rachel Van Dongen, POLITICOAn internal memo from POLITICO managing editor Rachel Smolkin this morning announced Rachel Van Dongen‘s promotion to deputy managing editor. Van Dongen was most recently Congress editor and deputy politics editor.

In her new role, she will work closely with Smolkin and alongside deputy managing editor Laura McGann. POLITICO’s Gregg Birnbaum, Dianna Heitz, Laura McGann and Nirvi Shah also serve in the role of deputy managing editor.

Van Dongen’s outstanding deputy, Steven Sloan, will lead the Congress team going forward.
