CNN’s Zucker to Meet With NABJ to Discuss Network’s State of Black Journalists

CNN President Jeff Zucker is scheduled to meet today in Atlanta with the leadership of the National Association of Black Journalists to discuss the state of black journalists at the network, FishbowlDC has learned.

Bob Butler, Vice President of Broadcast for NABJ, posted a note on the group’s Yahoo list serve last night saying that he, President Greg Lee and Executive Director Maurice Foster, will sit down with Zucker today.

The meeting comes on the heels of an announcement last week that morning show anchor and NABJ member Soledad O’Brien is transitioning to a new and less visible role at the network producing documentaries.

Negative Nerd Prom Fallout

Bad form? CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux got called to the carpet Monday and not the red carpet, mind you, but rather conservative radio personality Rush Limbaugh tore into her for her gushing tweets during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Malveaux’s Twitter feed looked like it was taken over by a star-crazed teen, the me-walls to end all me-walls. Isn’t this great? There she was with Woody Harrelson, and Valerie Jarrett, and Dave Chappelle. Mediaite has the recap.

Was Tina holding a gun to Howie’s head? You’d have thought The Daily Beast/CNN host Howard Kurtz wasn’t enjoying himself Saturday night from the story he published Monday slamming “Nutty Nerdprom.” Sure he slammed what appeared to be creamed corn on his ballroom dinner plate. But Kurtz is about as nerdy as it gets for Washington. He’s also as enmeshed in the culture as many other members of the media. So how two-faced it is for him to slam what the White House Correspondents’ Dinner has become — which, in his view, is apparently a celebrity invasion of Washington gone wild — and tweeting about his own celeb encounters all the way through it. Did his boss, Tina Brown, have a gun to his head? If Kurtz really wanted to show strength, instead of knocking the prom with a story, maybe he could show he means business with a boycott as opposed to say, going and fawning, and then writing about how ridiculous all that fawning is.

Hollywood and Congress collide, again — This morning Roll Call has a report on Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.) using Hot in Cleveland actresses Betty White and Wendie Mallick in a campaign spot in which they gush about his love of animals and support for community safety. Of course, then he has to release a statement, saying how much of an honor it was to work with Betty and Wendie. Really, congressman, a statement for that? Berman is battling Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif. ) post redistricting. Read the piece here.

CNN’s Costello to Atlanta

Having just revamped their mornings with Soledad O’Brien and “Starting Point”, CNN is now adding Washington-based Carol Costello to their morning lineup, FishbowlDC has learned. Costello will move from DC to Atlanta to begin anchoring CNN Newsroom from 9-11am.

Kyra Phillips will move to 11am, followed by Suzanne Malveaux from noon to 2pm. The changes are taking place as Randi Kaye, who was filling in temporarily on CNN Newsroom, becomes the permanent anchor for CNN Weekend mornings. Kaye will also do investigative reporting for AC 360 weeknights.

The Root to Show Off Influential People

Coming up…The Root, The Washington Post Company’s African American news and commentary site, will host their signature “The Root 100″ event on Nov. 5 at The Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington. The publication recently unveiled its list of most influential young African-Americans.

The Root 100 identifies African-American influencers 45 and under who “shape daily conversations with work that matters.” This year for the first time, individuals who made the list have been ranked. See the list here.

Washington Vs. Hollywood Hair

“Hollywood men have very pointy hair.” — Bloomberg TV‘s Lizzie O’Leary in a weekend tweet. To which The Takeaway’s Congressional Radio Correspondent Todd Zwillich remarked, “Washington women have very straightened hair.” These observations rang true if you saw Juke Kartel’s lead singer Toby Rand at the WHCD this weekend. The spiky dark-haired rocker was in town with his band to perform at Lanmark Technology Prez Lani Hay‘s private after party Thursday night. The comments, meanwhile, defied reality for anyone who saw Politico‘s Amie Parnes‘ Amy Winehouse beehive do at Tammy Haddad‘s garden party that shocked and awed fellow partygoers.

Red Carpet Hell

“My feet are going to be bloody stumps for nothing.” — An annoyed female reporter covering the red carpet at Capitol File‘s WHCD after party at the Ronald Reagan Building. Reporters covering the event waited at least two and a half hours for “stars” to show up. They included a variety of unknown models with breasts popping out of their dresses along with decently big names like Jeremy Piven, Patricia Arquette, David Arquette and Alyssa Milano. The same nameless female reporter said earlier as one of the unknown models strode by, “Who the hell is this? Every year it gets worse and worse. I’m sorry, I’m cynical.”

Roll Call’s Beckwith at one with Gilligan’s Mary Ann

Roll Call‘s acting Feature Editor Ryan Beckwith doesn’t look a thing like Mary Ann from “Gilligan’s Island.” But he sure felt like her in Manhattan this past weekend where he went to be part of an “elite” panel at Columbia’s J-School alumni weekend.

The pamphlet the school handed out said the discussion was being moderated by HuffPost Political Editor Tom Edsall and featured CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux, TIME‘s Jay Newton-Small, pollster Doug Schoen, McClatchy‘s James Rosen “and others.”

Beckwith was overheard saying he felt like Mary Ann, who was listed as “and the rest” in the original theme song.

Suzanne Malveaux Settles on Atlanta

CNN Executive VP Ken Jautz announced this morning that CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux is going to anchor “CNN Newsroom” from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. starting Jan. 31.

Malveaux will move to Atlanta, a CNN spokeswoman said.

Malveaux has worked in CNN’s White House unit for nearly a decade. According to the network’s Pressroom blog, she joins CNN’s Kyra Phillips, Ali Velshi and Brooke Baldwin, who will continue to anchor CNN Newsroom from 9-11 a.m., 1-3 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. respectively.

Suzette Malveaux (Suzanne’s Twin) to Lead Briefing

The American Constitution Society (ACS) hosts a briefing tomorrow at the National Press Club on AT&T Mobility v. Concepcion, which will be argued before the U.S. Supreme Court Nov. 9.

But that’s not what’s interesting.

Turns out the moderator for the briefing is Suzette Malveaux, an associate law professor at Catholic University and identical twin to CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux. The briefing is at noon and will happen over lunch. The event is free, but RSVP is required.

Three Generations of Malveaux Women Walking for a Cure

Tomorrow will be quite the day for White House correspondent Suzanne Malveaux.

She, along with her mom, twin sister, Suzette, and niece, Nailah, will be walking tomorrow and Sunday in the Avon Breast Cancer Walkathon. That’s 26.2 miles of walking for a cure by three generations of Malveaux women. Suzanne will sneak off tomorrow evening attend the famed dinner and then return to the camp site for a full day of walking on Sunday.
