Actress was ‘well spoken’

So what did Union, who lost a friend to cancer, say that was so eloquent? The quote: “Since she passed my sense of urgency has greatly expanded and increased — it just sucks.” Schwab “reported” that Union “didn’t flinch” when asked about the recent Komen/Planned Parenthood controversy. “I can say as a proud Democrat that I don’t bat an eyelash supporting Komen and I don’t bat an eyelash supporting Planned Parenthood because ultimately their goal is the same: saving women’s lives,” she said. That’s a lot of still eyelashes, right, Sticky?

Baier remembers deceased colleague, puts sons in matching outfit

“Happy Birthday to our friend Tony Snow.. he would have been 57 today. We miss him!” — FNC’s Bret Baier on Snow, former White House Press Sec. and Fox News anchor, who died from cancer in 2008. In less touching news from Baier… he dressed his boys in matching outfits over the weekend and then tweeted it out for the world to see. Fortunately, he said, he didn’t have to wear the same outfit. Really, fortunately? We’d have paid good money (well, maybe $10) to see the picture of the whole fam dressed head to toe in matching frocks. Kind of like that horrible Mike Huckabee family photo fiasco.

TVNewser: ABC’s Bob Woodruff returned to Iraq today for the first time since being injured by a roadside bomb in January 2006. His first report will air tonight on “World News with Charles Gibson.”

Fox News Remembers Tony Snow

Sunday marks the one year anniversary of Tony Snow‘s passing and to honor the former White House press secretary and Fox News contributor, the network will air packages in remembrance. They’ll include words from friends and colleagues, including President George HW Bush, President George W Bush, Bill O’Reilly, Greta Van Susteren, Chris Wallace, Bret Baier, Juan Williams, Dana Perino, Karl Rove and Newt Gingrich.

Griff Jenkins, Snow’s former radio producer and long-time friend, will also share his memories and stories about Snow on several programs throughout the day.

Earlier in the week Perino penned this piece in Politico remembering Snow.

Dana Perino Remembers Tony Snow

This upcoming Sunday marks one year since the death of former White House press secretary Tony Snow. His successor Dana Perino pens this piece “Remembering Tony Snow’s life” in today’s Politico. An excerpt:

He had his finger on the pulse of what Americans were thinking, and his fan base grew quickly. His coverage of the Sept. 11 attacks as a reporter gave him the foundation to argue forcefully and convincingly about the importance of keeping our country safe and for supporting our troops. As my predecessor as press secretary, he was brilliant at the podium, with a star quality the White House briefing room had never seen.

Tony didn’t always sweat the details, which sometimes left us scrambling to fill in the gaps. He was almost always a few minutes late, and that wasn’t the easiest thing to be in our punctual White House. Needing to keep his weight up after the cancer treatments, he liked to eat pancake sandwiches for breakfast â€” getting a stack of cakes and a side of sausage and putting it all together before smothering it in butter and syrup. He loved vanilla lattes and had his assistant, Ed Buckley, run down to the mess to get him several in a day – Ed made it clear he was “picking up for Tony.”

He had dreadful taste in ties, and so we kept spares to switch out before he went on TV. He was charmingly forgetful, regularly losing his wallet and his BlackBerry, sometimes both in one day. One of his BlackBerrys was actually found in a winter boot a few weeks later – it was summer.

RTCA Dinner Wrap-Up

We think the President said it best- “The jokes may not be as good, but neither is the guest list.”

There were no TomKat or Ashton and Demi sightings. The biggest star (and highest dress slit) in the room was former Miss California Carrie Prejean, followed in star power by actor Tate Donovan and Angelina Jolie‘s brother James Haven.

But the 2009 RTCA dinner did light up the Washington Convention Center with DC journo star power- those attending included Andrea Mitchell, Chris Matthews, Lara Logan, Chip Reid, Major Garrett (check him out with Prejean in a photo after the jump), Chuck Todd, Jonathan Karl, Bill Plante, Savannah Guthrie, Ed Henry, Bill Press, Contessa Brewer, Luke Russert, Maureen Orth, Willie Geist, Mika and Joe, Judy Woodruff, Lawrence O’Donnell (and Norah and Kelly), Nancy Cordes, Steve Capus, David Bohrman, Robin Sproul, Heidi Collins, Carl Cameron, John Harwood, Mike Allen and Mark Whitaker to name a few.

As well as Robert Gibbs, Bill Burton and Laura Capps, Michael Steele (actually seated at a CBS table with Burton), Dana Perino, Samantha Powers, Ken Salazar (donning a cowboy hat), Austan Goolsbee, Gordon Johndroe, David Axelrod, Eric Holder, Sen. Susan Collins, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, Leon Panetta and Rep. Glenn Nye.

The dinner was a little unconventional than most. Before dinner was served, there were various performances by JibJab, the Onion News Network and Sweet Honey on the Rocks (a favorite of Michelle Obama, though she did not attend). RTCA chair and the evening’s emcee Heather Dahl introduced President Obama, who left soon after this remarks. The date of the dinner actually changed a few times to accommodate the President’s schedule.

The Joan S. Barone Award was presented by CBS’ Bill Plante to NBC congressional correspondent Mike Viqueira for his coverage of the bailout story on the Hill. Viqueira dedicated his award to Mary Dorman, the NBC Washington bureau’s longtime assignment desk manager who died early this year of cancer. The Bloom daughters also presented an award in their father David Bloom‘s memory. BBC’s Rome Hartman accepted on behalf of Orla Guerin. A video tribute to Bill Headline, Tony Snow and Tim Russert, all who passed this year, was also shown.

FishPoolDC: Our Insider’s Notes from Today’s Press Briefing

CNN must have jinxed the briefing start today when they announced at 2:05 that it would start “shortly.” The 2:30 start was pushed back a half hour at 2:15, leaving several reporters outside the briefing room to sigh, “too late to go back” to their offices before the actual event…

School’s (Not?) Out for Summer: In answer to Lynn Sweet‘s query about the president’s suggestion during education remarks this morning that he would advocate for a longer school day or school year, WH Press Secretary Robert Gibbs noted that this is a proposal that has been discussed in the education community for the last decade, though he did “hope that my son didn’t hear that portion of today’s speech.”

Summer Reading?: Gibbs was asked to compare POTUS and VPOTUS remarks on opening talks with elements of the Taliban. When he suggested that all reporters take a look at the transcript, he was challenged on whose he was referencing. “I’d certainly read both,” he said to much laughter. “That’d be awkward, wouldn’t it?” he added, and then promptly retracted from the potential for some obvious Biden-verbosity jokes.

Name that Tune: He had almost made it through the briefing, but Fox’s Wendell Goler couldn’t reach the trigger quickly enough to silence his ringing cell phone. “Busted!” he joked. Though the entire room was amused by the ring tone, this reporter among others was sad to admit that we are obviously not hip enough to recognize the tune. Wendell wouldn’t tell. The incident led some to amusingly recall when ABC’s Martha Raddatz accidentally played a little “Ridin’ Dirty” during a Tony Snow briefing in the Bush Administration.

“Happy Day 50!”: The corps has joked before about the n-th day of the administration (one of the many statistics that is tallied reliably by the legendary Mark Knoller of CBS Radio), and today it was ABC Radio’s Ann Compton who referenced the “50th day” as she asked whether the president was irritated by the constant criticisms that he might be trying to tackle too much at once. Gibbs chuckled that he’d have to reference his chart on presidential happiness back at his office. “Can you release that?” Knoller asked. “We’re not that transparent,” Gibbs quipped.

From the Washington Times:

The memory of former White House spokesman Tony Snow will endure upon the choppy waters of the Potomac River.

The West Potomac High School Crew Boosters are currently holding weekly raffles to purchase a rowing shell to be christened the “Tony Snow,” named in honor of the former presidential press secretary and longtime Washington journalist, who died in July at age 53.

And get this: last week’s raffle winner was none other than Jay McConville, a neighbor, close friend and bandmate of Mr. Snow’s.

All the more appropriate, considering Mr. Snow’s rock ‘n roll band, “Beats Working,” played only one year ago at a West Potomac crew team benefit. Mr. Snow’s daughter, Kendall, rows on the girls’ varsity shell.

DC’s “Funniest” “Celebrity”: Kotecki Wuz Robbed!

Last night was the 15th annual “D.C.’s Funniest Celebrity” competition and, after bombing for two years in a year, I decided to simply become a judge instead. (See my write up on last night’s event for the Washington Examiner here, including video and photos).

Suffice to say: Politico’s James Kotecki was the funniest, but some judges — *cough*Clements*cough*Jenkins*cough*Tumulty*cough*Carlson*cough* — were smitten by the star power of Mike Huckabee so the governor ended up winning (either that or someone did a really bad job tallying up the votes).

Some other funny media notes:

Want to know why David Shuster couldn’t perform and Chuck Todd couldn’t judge? Ask the bigwigs at NBC who forbade them from doing so at the last minute. (This Lame-O Factor could also explain why Shuster was recently told to can his regular light-hearted news segment).

What did Kotecki call Shuster during his routine? A dick? Tsk tsk…

Emcee Clarence Page paid tribute to two former Funniest Celebrity contestants — Tony Snow and Tim Russert — who passed away in the past year. “Despite the fact that they were journalists, they were good people.”

CNN’s Jamie McIntyre: “I have very low expectations for tonight. I just want to get through it and still have my job tomorrow.”

Bob Barr: “I like MSNBC. It’s like Fox, but without the ratings.”

Perino’s Humor: More “Dry And Wry”

Over at the Examiner, Jeff Dufour and I crunched the numbers and determined that reporters in the White House are back to Scott McClellan-like levels of laughter under Dana Perino (this, after Tony Snow made instances of laughter amongst the press corps increase by 330%, compared to McClellan).

Of course, there’s more to the story:

Perino may be receiving less laughter from the press corps for a number of reasons. First, attention has turned away from the presidency during Bush’s final months in office and many of the briefing room’s regular characters are out on the campaign trail. Second, Perino’s briefings are far shorter than Snow’s; Perino’s briefings during her first four months averaged 22 minutes, while Snow’s averaged 35. And finally — as Knox puts it — “I really appreciate Dana’s sense of humor, but I’m not sure it lends itself to a lot of people joining in.” Knox calls Perino’s comedic style “dry and wry.”

Tull for Tony

That was Jethro Tull dedicating much of tonight’s set at the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts to the late Tony Snow. They said they wished that the musician/White House press secretary could be on stage to jam with them.

Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson considered Snow a good friend.

Tony Snow Remembered

Politico’s Mike Allen reports from Tony Snow’s memorial service, which was held this morning:

Former White House press secretary Tony Snow was remembered Thursday for “love given and love received,” at what amounted to a state funeral, complete with remarks from President Bush.

Snow was a Fox radio and television celebrity — one of America’s most popular conservatives — before serving as President Bush’s spokesman as he publicly and cheerfully battled the stubborn, cruel colon cancer that took his life Saturday at age 53.

The Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, president of the Catholic University of America, said in the funeral homily that Snow “did not need a long life for us to measure.”
