Jonathan Alter Accuses Daily Caller Scribe of ‘Racial Animus’ Toward Obama

In Bloomberg View columnist Jonathan Alter‘s new book, he accuses The Daily Caller‘s Neil Munro of having “racial animus” toward President Obama. He also refers to him as “a reporter.”

Alter’s allegation comes after he makes a similar claim of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh. “Limbaugh was only the most public face of racial animus toward Obama,” Alter writes in The Center Holds: Obama and His Enemies. “When Neil Munro a ‘reporter’ for the Daily Caller, used a day pass at the White House to shout at the president in the Rose Garden while he was speaking, it offended the veteran reporter Sam Donaldson.”

The Daily Caller‘s Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson, also a weekend co-host of Fox & Friends, took a shot at Alter concerning what he wrote about his reporter. He told FishbowlDC this afternoon, “Alter stopped practicing journalism a long time ago, when he went to work as a courtier for the president,” he said. “He’s been sniffing Obama’s throne and churning out propaganda on his behalf for five years. No wonder he’s offended when an actual reporter dares to ask his boss a question. Nor is it surprising that he mistakes journalism for racism. When you worship a politician like a god, all dissent looks like bigotry.”

Munro memorably interrupted a statement Obama was delivering on immigration policy last summer. “Why’d you favor foreigners over Americans?” Munro barked at Obama in the middle of his comments.

Donaldson, a former White House correspondent for ABC News, made a name for himself yelling questions out at past presidents. At the time, Carlson defended Munro by comparing him to Donaldson.

The well-known newsman wasn’t pleased about that.

Boots on the Ground: Rep. Rangel Flips Boots the Bird

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) has endured his fair share of scandal, which can make for uncomfortable encounters in public when perfect strangers like video journalist (this might be putting it generously) Joey Boots start heckling him.

During the recent Puerto Rican Day Parade in the Bronx, Rangel was riding in a red convertible happily waving to the crowd like a Miss America winner when Boots began shouting at him truck driver style.

Provoking him, one might say: “HEY CHARLIE CHARLIE! YOU’RE A CROOK. YOU’RE A CROOK. YOU’RE CHEATING ON YOUR TAXES. YOU’RE A CROOK. … YOU’RE A CROOK CHARLIE. YOU CROOK. CHARLIE YOU’RE A CROOK. CHARLIE YOU’RE A CROOK. YOU’RE A CROOK CHARLIE. … CHARLIE YOU’RE NOTHING BUT A CROOK. … YOU SHOULD BE IN JAIL.”

It’s safe to say Boots handles his own publicity. In tweets this morning, he wrote to FNC’s RedEye, to WaPo and more to say that Rangel had given him the finger four times. Maybe something to put on his resumé?

Boots, whose work has appeared on the Howard Stern Show, is well-known for his antics. Read more

Touré Calls Tucker Carlson Remarks ‘Brain Dead,’ Carlson Asks, ‘What’s a Touré?’

Touré, the Madonna figure of MSNBC’s “The Cycle,” took a moment to call remarks made by The Daily Caller and FNC “Fox & Friends” Co-host Tucker Carlson “brain dead” in a column by WaPo‘s Jonathan Capehart. This morning’s subject matter involved a tweet by Clark Hennessy, Social Media Editor for The Daily Caller, who quipped that GOP Chairman Reince Priebus was the HNIC, in reference to lyrics by a rapper, Fashawn.

Capehart writes that blacks can use the phrase for a whole host of reasons but whites look strange if they do. “To use this phrase and not be black requires a level of cultural literacy that would be as rare as it would be impressive.” Hennessy is not black. He’s a native of New Zealand, who, as we reported previously, came to the publication about a week ago.

As the column moves on, it’s clear that Touré is Capehart’s go-to source. Capeheart notes that he asked Carlson about the tweeter’s identity and about what action, if any, was taken against Hennessy. He quotes Carlson’s entire email, which says in part,

“I realize it’s habit on the Left to hunt for racists under every bed, but you won’t find one here. The employee who wrote it was making a reference to his favorite hip hop song. Not everyone understood the allusion (including me), and — even worse — there was a typo in the tweet. So we deleted it. But the tweet certainly wasn’t intended to be malicious or racially-tinged. And by the way, isn’t Reince Priebus white?”

Capehart then asks the nation’s leading expert on African American racial matters — 42-year-old Touré, of course — to react to Carlson’s statement. Touré’s qualifications on the matter include that he’s a music journalist and host of Fuse’s “Hiphop Shop.” Rev. Run from Run DMC officiated his wedding. He’s also the author of several books involving race, such as Soul City, Who’s Afraid of Post-Blackness? What It Means To Be Black Now, and I Would Die 4 U: Why Prince Became an Icon. Speaking of racism, while at Emory, Touré founded a black student newspaper that has been critiqued by The Daily Caller as “militantly anti-white.”

And maybe in the most ironic twist of all, in August of 2012, Touré caused a stir by stating that by calling President Obama “angry,” GOP nominee Mitt Romney was tactically engaging in the “niggerization” of the president. Touré later issued an apology. The story was covered by the usual suspects — WaPo, Mediaite, Newsbusters, Breitbart.com and The Hollywood Gossip.

Capehart wrote,

“When I asked Toure for a reaction to Carlson’s response, he said that what’s ‘even more offensive is Tucker’s brain-dead ‘the left looks for racists under every bed,’ as if we’re here searching for racism. They love the idea that it’s we who mention racism who are the problem rather than racism itself being the problem.’”

Carlson’s reaction to all this?

Female Peers Try to De-Wad Erick Erickson’s Twisted Panty Tirade

Female peers of RedState and FNC’s Erick Erickson took to the web Thursday to play mommy to a grown man, offering unsolicited advice over his declaration that women ought not be the family breadwinners. After Pew released the news that 40 percent of women in homes with children under 18 were the breadwinners, Erickson went on his radio show and said men should be the predominate providers in the family and that it’s his preference that the woman not work and stay at home with the children.

“Ladies, if you want to work that’s fine,” he wrote in a follow-up story on RedState in which he stated in elaborate detail that he and his wife have had their struggles. “If your position in life makes it advantageous for you to be the primary bread winner, that’s fine. But your individual circumstances and mine should not hide the fact that there is an ideal and optimal family arrangement whether we in our own lives can meet it.”

Maybe the best line of the piece: “Many feminist and emo lefties have their panties in a wad over my statements in the past 24 hours about families.”

As rabid feminists and lefties twisted themselves (and maybe their panties too, who knows?) into knots over his stance, female peers swooped in to both save him and scold him. “Dear @EWErickson,” began Conservative radio host Laura Ingraham, who often hosts FNC programs. “You are polluting your own feed w/ the nasty retweets. You empower them. Rise above!”

FNC’s Greta Van Susteren, who once called then-FNC Contributor and now FNC “Fox & Friends” host Tucker Carlson “a pig” with “no judgment” for running a Daily Caller story on Mike Tyson‘s crude womb-shifting thoughts on Sarah Palin, took a more direct approach. “Have these men lost their minds?” she wrote in a Thursday blog post in which she also wondered (to herself and thousands of her boisterous followers), “And these are my colleagues??!! Oh brother… maybe I need to have a little chat with them. Next thing they will have a segment to discuss eliminating women’s right to vote?”

When Erickson creates controversy he goes big, like last week when he cracked on President Obama not being aware of the Oklahoma tornado. He continued to dig a hole (please, no offense to feminists, it’s just an expression) for himself Thursday by writing, “In many, many animal species, the male and female of the species play complementary roles, with the male dominant in strength and protection and the female dominant in nurture. It’s the female who tames the male beast. One notable exception is the lion, where the male lion looks flashy but behaves mostly like a lazy beta-male MSNBC producer.”

Male journalists on the left also had wisdom. “When accused of sexism, make sure to use the phrase ‘panties in a wad’ in your defense,” wrote Salon‘s D.C. -based Alex Seitz-Wald on Twitter. To which Mother JonesDavid Corn remarked, “Is it sexist to assume they wear panties?” Not to be excluded from those most likely to advise Erickson, Media Matters’ John Whitehouse wrote, “So Erickson wants to use his sexism as an opportunity to push his radio show? Ask Rush how that story ends.”

Just in case you think Erickson’s sexist… Read more

Week-Old Daily Caller Social Media Editor (and Gangsta Expert) Will Live Another Day

The Head Editor In Charge of The Daily Caller has spoken. Clark Hennessy, the brand spanking new Social Media Editor for the publication, ran into an online snarl Thursday when he tweeted something about RNC Chairman Reince Priebus being the HNIC (you can Google it).

Hennessy, a New Zealander who arrived to the pub a week ago and mans the DC‘s Twitter feed, quickly deleted the tweet. But not fast enough as it was retweeted 141 times. And soon the uptight Twitterati went wild, thick with outrage over his gangsta tweet and accusing the young man and The Daily Caller of being racist. Hennessy tried to remedy the situation by tweeting what he wrote again and replacing “HNIC” with “boss.” Good thinking! He also expressed regret: “Apologies for the earlier tweet, clearly been listening to too much Fashawn.”

A journalist soon emailed us, saying, “Whatever you do, don’t do a Twitter search (search.twitter.com) for ‘HNIC’ and ‘DailyCaller.’”

We hear the newsroom went a bit haywire yesterday amid the controversy, and that Hennessy was spotted in the office of Publisher Neil Patel. Some feared he may get the axe. But whatever the talking-to amounted to couldn’t have been that bad. Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson told FishbowlDC this morning that Hennessy will not lose his job over this. “As for yesterday’s tweet, it was a reference to a song by Fashawn and not a racist attack on Reince Priebus, whom I don’t even think is black. Still, given the reaction on Twitter and the current standards on accidentally offensive speech, we have executed the employee who wrote it.”

Uh oh. Whah?

Tucker Carlson Asks, ‘Howard Dean is Still Alive?’

Former Vermont Gov. and Presidential hopeful Howard Dean went on a nutty rampage against the media this morning on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and gave some news outlets a swift kick in the teeth. As he and Co-host Joe Scarborough bitched and moaned about how unfair newspapers can be — Scarborough criticizing his hometown paper’s “powerful” editorial board, and Dean blasting the NYT for being too opinion-based in its news stories — he did make a valid point about how thin-skinned the media is.

And then he went haywire. He set his wrath on two publications in particular: The Daily Caller and National ReviewWhen he learned that Daily Caller columnist Matt Lewis, a “friend of the show,” said on Twitter that Dean needed to lay off the caffeine, saying, “Time for Howard Dean to switch to decaf,” Dean’s horse brain snapped. He called The Daily Caller “a right-wing propaganda machine.” (Psst… case in point on the caffeine?)

When asked about it, Daily Caller Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson asked FishbowlDC, “Howard Dean is still alive? Where is he?”

But The Daily Caller wasn’t alone. Dean also sunk his canines into National Review. Read more

Daily Caller Called ‘Most Unethical’ Publication After Editor Sends ‘Dick Pic’

Media people receive vast amounts of emails everyday. Many are useless story pitches and press releases from undiscriminating publicists. Daily Caller Associate Editor Christopher Bedford is the type to sometimes reply to those emails, even if it’s just to send “a Dick pic.”

The Raw Story reported Monday on what has become a seriously entertaining, if undoubtedly immature, conflict between The DC and The Secular Coalition for America, a pro-atheist non-profit based in Washington. When Bedford has received past emails from SCA’s spokeswoman Lauren Anderson Youngblood, he has responded to them with smart-ass comments, such as “It’s nice out. Take a day off from hating God, kids and babies” and “Here’s a Dick pic,” with a photo of former Vice President Dick Cheney attached.

“Imagine this,” Beford told FishbowlDC, “A conservative columnist is just trying to cut out of town early on a Friday afternoon to enjoy the sunshine and he receives an unsolicited pro-abortion email touting science as god. Skipping over thinking a sunny Friday afternoon is a good time to send a press release, one single ounce of research on her end (beyond fishing my email out of somewhere) would have shown that I’m completely uninterested in their dumbass opinions.”

SCA responded to Bedford’s emails by…

Fmr. Mother Jones Editor Lets Loose

Oh what a little time outside the Beltway will do for a person. On Tuesday afternoon, Adam Weinstein, a former engagement editor and national security reporter for Mother Jones and a former contestant on Survivor Baghdad, exposed his real feelings about the AP-DOJ scandal, including a sarcastic crack at National Journal national reporter Ron Fournier.

Weinstein, who did a stint for Mother Jones in Washington last year, is always a bit of firecracker. In October of 2012, he called FNC and Daily Caller‘s Tucker Carlson a “dickbag” after lashing out at him on Twitter for once wearing bow-ties. Now Weinstein’s based in Miami and working as an editor, writer and media consultant.

Fournier, who tweets at least once an hour, didn’t lob any comment back at him.

Daily Caller Honchos Boycott WHCD

As usual, Daily Caller and Fox News’ Tucker Carlson avoided The White House Correspondents’ Dinner like the plague. This year he was in New Orleans with Publisher Neil Patel.

What was the pair up to?

According to Daily Caller Senior Online Editor Vince Coglianese, “Yeah. While the rest of DC was consumed with the Correspondents Dinner, these dorks were racing each other on go karts.”

Tick Tock: WHCD 2013

By Betsy Rothstein, Peter Ogburn and Eddie Scarry

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner was a blur this year as stars, journalists, nerdy political types — and Psy — rubbed elbows. Well, not Psy, he was busy smoking. But the rest of ‘em fawned and frolicked around the Washington Hilton oohing and ahhing at one another’s evening wear. People watching was admittedly pretty phenomenal. As evidenced by the shrieks coming from young, female bystanders salivating at the mere sight of a star. Each time an actor or well-known journalist walked by, they screamed and barked things out at them like faux paparazzi. In a moment of hilarity, one journalist, who shall remain nameless, was heard biting a security employee’s head off as they kept constantly trying to herd and push a small smattering of people waiting by the door from one end to the other. “I have two tickets, I have a right to be here and I’m not moving,” the person snapped in a display of spectacular irritation. Security immediately backed right down and eased away. And the lesson is? Yelling wins! (By the way, pictured above: actress Kate Walsh.)

4:35 p.m. Betsy tells Eddie she need 15 more minutes. He replies, “Are you trying to squeeze in a size 8 dress again?”

5:42 p.m. Eddie is running slightly behind because he has no idea how to tie a bow-tie and he couldn’t get the Tucker Carlson consult. As usual, Carlson skipped out of town for the WHCD. We learned later in the evening that he’s in New Orleans riding Go Karts with Daily Caller Publisher Neil Patel.

6:22 p.m. A rando woman who won’t stop yapping is saying to her friends, “I’m walking around the house going, does this match?”

6:23  p.m. The NPR greeter awaiting NPR party guests in the front of the hotel looks like he should be at the airport. He’s a vision of nerdy perfection.

6:24 p.m. Washington Examiner‘s Byron York walks into the hotel and promptly walks down the wrong set of stairs.

6: 25 p.m. It’s Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera! He’s all smiles for anyone who approaches. Up close his mustache is nothing short of thick and amazing.

6:27 p.m. A Jon Huntsman sighting. He walks in with a lovely blonde (presumably his wife) on his arm.

6:28 p.m. We get reprimanded for the second time for standing in the “wrong” place. Is there a right place? Who knows?
