The Boston Globe printed an editorial Friday supporting appointing an interim replacement to Senator Kennedy’s vacant seat. The paper writes: “There is no mourning period when it comes to ensuring adequate representation for Massachusetts residents in the US Senate. Important votes on health care and climate change draw near. Surely the governor can find a temporary replacement whose views are consistent with those of Kennedy and the Massachusetts voters who kept faith with him since 1962.”

Final numbers are in for Wednesday’s Obama news conference (via TVNewser). 24.68M Total Viewers watched on 11 networks. That’s down 14% percent from the 28.81 million who watched Obama’s last newser in April, off 39% from Obama’s second news conference in March, and down 50% from his first primetime newser in February

More numbers for you- there are now more TV sets than people in the US, according to a new Nielsen study.

Politico‘s executive editor Jim VandeHei, publisher Robert Allbritton, editor-in-chief John Harris and senior political correspondent Ben Smith made an appearance on Charlie Rose Tuesday (where was Mike Allen- it could have been a VF reunion).

AP: Walter Cronkite was remembered as a great journalist, sailor, friend and father during services yesterday. “I just feel so terrible about Walter’s death that I can hardly say anything,” said longtime CBS newsman and 60 Minutes commentator Andy Rooney.

NYT: Walter Cronkite told his children from time to time that he was “just” a reporter, one who had “just ended up reporting bigger and bigger stories.”

AP: The New York Times Co. said Thursday its second-quarter profit climbed nearly 85 percent, as it cut costs aggressively to deal with a worsening decline in advertising. Its stock jumped in premarket trading.

Things got a little tense at a Metro press conference yesterday when Metro’s general manager had some criticism of WaPo‘s coverage. Get the scoop from WUSA here.

Who is America’s most trusted newscasted? Brian Williams? No. Charlie Gibson? No. Katie Couric? No. According to a Time poll, it is actually Jon Stewart.

“Birthers” are back in the news. TVNewser: CNN is separating itself from the radio commentary of one of its lead hosts, Lou Dobbs, who seemed to support the validity of thinking President Obama wasn’t born in the U.S. A CNN spokesperson says: “On CNN, Lou is an independent reporter who covers stories that people are talking about.”

HuffPost has launched what they’re calling the “Real Misery Index,” an online gauge of how Americans are affected by the economic times. According to the release, it will combine “a more accurate unemployment statistic (the U6 formulation), with the inflation rate for three essentials (food and beverages, gas, medical costs), and year-over-year percent increases in credit card delinquencies, housing prices, food stamp participation, and home equity loan deficiencies.” Check it out here.

NYO: The September ad page numbers are out for Conde Nast, and they are grim. The monthly magazines at the company, as a whole, are down 37 percent. Vogue tumbled to 427 pages total, down 36 percent from last September. W is down 53 percent; Allure and Gourmet are down 51 percent; and Vanity Fair dropped 36 percent.

There may be widespread cuts coming to WRC, NBC’s channel 4, after a newsroom reorganization and switch to new digital technologies, according to WaPo.

Did you know that Fox Business Network’s Peter Barnes is also a children’s book publisher? He’s profiled in WaPo.

NYT’s Brian Stelter reported that web traffic (or more accurately, lack of) may have been the reason behind WaPo’s sudden dismissal of columnist Dan Froomkin. He’s since moved off to HuffPost and Arianna Huffington is confident. “I have no doubt that Dan, both as an editor and as a writer, will be a traffic magnet for us.”

Since his arrest by Iranian authorities last month, Maziar Bahari‘s employer, Newsweek has been making pleas for his release. The magazine’s editor-in-chief Jon Meacham again called for Bahari’s release with an article detailing the foreign correspondent’s work in an effort to dispel allegations that he is a subversive or spy. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pushed for the release of the two US journalists currently detained in North Korea. “The two journalists and their families have expressed great remorse for this incident,” Clinton said Saturday. “And I think everyone is very sorry that it happened. What we hope for now is that these two young women would be granted amnesty through the North Korean system and be allowed to return home to their families as soon as possible.” (h/t Politico)

Shenanigans: Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) is starting an all female (bipartisan) congressional softball team. Their first game is this evening at 7:35pm at Guy Mason Field and the journos are getting involved too. The first pitch will be thrown by Cokie Roberts and CNN’s Dana Bash will serve as the announcer.

They are not quite the walking dead, but their eyes are frequently ringed with the bags that accompany exhaustion. “This is a place, because of the stress, the schedule and the sheer hours, that just chews people up and spits them out,” said press secretary Robert Gibbs, whose alarm clock is set to 4:30 a.m., though he ignores the early ring more often these days.”
