That’s The Way It Was And We Liked It!
After the Style honored itself and its 40 years of existence, we got an email critical of the Style section from someone claiming to be a Postie (others had their doubts…) and, now, a Postie has brought to our attention this disgruntled comment to that very Hank Steuver article:
Part of the current problem with Style can be shown by this article, its sloppy reporting, its sloppy style, its horrible writing, its juvenile nature, its complete amateurishness–all qualities that Ben Bradlee hates (to this day), that have destroyed Style, that readers hate (believe us), and that have contributed to the steady decline of the section. Editors: READERS DO NOT WANT TO READ BAD-WRITING STORIES LIKE THIS IN STYLE. Steuver can’t seem to understand, after repeated calls and letters and complaints to the Post, that his sloppy, negative, childish writing continually turns off readers. This is not want people want to read in Style. If you wanted a good story about the Style section, Tom Zito, Stephanie Mansfield, Sally Quinn, Tom Shales, Gary Arnold, John Yardley, Richard Harrington, Eve Zibart, Judith Martin, Alan Kriegsman or Henry Allen should have written the piece–not THOSE are true, real, professional, quality Style writers!
Inquiring minds want to know: Is this a former Style staffer?
