The British Embassy Commemorates Burning of the White House

The British Embassy Sunday night ruffled some feathers when it posted a tweet to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the White House going up in flames, with a White House cake surrounded by American and British flags and sparklers, and the caption, “Only sparklers this time!”

According to History.com, “during the War of 1812…British troops enter Washington, D.C. and burn the White House in retaliation for the American attack on the city of York in Ontario, Canada, in June 1812.”

The embassy later tweeted apologies with a link to a HuffPost piece penned by Patrick Davies, deputy head of mission at the British Embassy in Washington, commemorating the anniversary.
