A dangerous time to be a journalist

There has never been a more dangerous time to be a journalist. Press freedom is far from assured anywhere in the world when more than 140 journalists are behind bars, and another 81 have died while doing their jobs in 2006–the highest toll since 1994. On February 1, Reporters Without Borders will be releasing its annual report, “The Global Press Freedom Tour,” in which it will highlight the situation in Iraq and Mexico (the two most dangerous countries for the press in 2006), China (the world’s largest prison for journalists), and the United States–a democratic country where journalists enjoy freedoms unknown in repressive countries, but also a country where attacks on source confidentiality rose again last year, further endangering investigative journalism.
