Two New D.C. Publishers

Two D.C. area publishing industry changes to note today:

  • Roll Call’s Kenneth C. Day announced to the staff that he’ll be leaving at the end of the week to become publisher of the travel bimonthly Washington Flyer.

Day, Roll Call’s director of marketing, strategy, and communications, will be taking the helm at a magazine decimated by the arrival of a bevy of super lux magazines this year. Day’s post was formerly held by Peter Abrahams, who left to launch Modern Luxury’s D.C. magazine, and Flyer Senior Editor Jayne Sandman left to go to Jason Binn‘s Capitol File.

newsweekcover.jpgIn his email today, he also noted that Newsweek’s cover (right) gave prominent placement to Roll Call: Karl Rove’s hand rests smack dab on a copy of the Capitol Hill bible. “Even Mr. Rove knows that if he’s reading it in Roll Call, he’s reading it first,” Day wrote.

  • Also today, Government Executive, one of Atlantic Media’s niche publications and the old standby for federal managers, is bringing back Steven M. Vito as group publisher and executive director. Vito first joined the magazine in 1999 and successfully managed it to healthy revenue and profit increases before departing for the private sector at CACI International.
