U.S. News Launches Online Push
The place of weekly and monthly news magazines is very much in flux these days–with minute-by-minute news dissemination, it’s hard for a once-a-week publication to find freshness and relevance–hence the often dueling covers about God, angels, entertainment, and lifestyle trends. Now U.S. News and World Report, the smallest of the three major newsweeklies, is looking to revitalize its offerings by placing a new emphasis on online content.
In a recent staff meeting at U.S. News editors outlined the magazine’s new online initiative, telling reporters, in essence, to stop thinking of themselves as “print” journalists–they would now be “print” and “online” journalists.
Editor Brian Duffy announced the initiative last week in a little-noticed note in the June 20th issue. “We’ve been publishing online daily for years, but with all of our writers, reporters, columnists, and photo editors engaged in the effort now, the menu of new offerings has exploded,” he said.
In addition to regular news content, there’s a host of online columns and features, Dr. Bernadine Healy’s Inside the Doctor’s Bag column, Tech Trends, Arts & Ideas, Career Spotlight, Personal Finance, and Capital Commerce, as well as old stand-bys like the long-daily Biz Buzz.
“These aren’t long pieces, but they are reported and provide an opportunity to get on our site interesting and timely stuff that might not make it into the magazine because of space and weekly deadline issues,” one staffer explained.
The magazine is also encouraging writers to set up their own homepages to archive their stories and perhaps even post blog-like items down the road.
