Virginia Tech Photo Debate

We initially hesitated to bring your attention to this debate earlier, but the issue seems to be gaining momentum in some corners.

Regarding this photo from the Virginia Tech tragedy, there’s been some debate about whether a.) it was an appropriate photo to us and b.) is that thing hanging down a tourniquet (almost certainly yes) or, er, something else (doubtful)?

And, here in D.C., which papers, if any, actually used this photo? And did any manipulate the photo (like the New York Post and People)? And should we all care? (FishbowlDC thinks it’s a rather overhyped debate, but send us your thoughts via the tips box anyway).
