Voices of Haiti Comes to Washington

Voices of Haiti, a multimedia performance examining HIV/AIDS in a post-quake Haiti, will be in Washington for two nights only this month. Voices is centered around the poetry of Kwame Dawes and the yearlong reporting by the award-winning Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting’s team of journalists. The event will be at the Corcoran Gallery of Art Wednesday, July 25 and Thursday, July 26. Free performances begin at 8:30 p.m. both evenings.

Voices grew out of the Pulitzer Center’s year-long reporting project involving Dawes, Andre Lambertson, a 17-year-old who lives in Haiti with HIV, and journalist Lisa ArmstrongVoices tells the stories of ordinary people going about their lives and coming to terms with the impact of HIV/AIDS on them, their families and their communities. Dawes’ poems are at the heart of Voices, with music by Kevin Simmonds and soprano Valetta Brinson, and accompanied by Lambertson’s photographs.

The July 26th performance will include a panel: Dawes, Lambertson, filmmaker David France and Patricia Finneran of the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Film Program and Fund. Reserve a seat here.

The Washington-based Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is a non-profit organization that supports independent international journalism they say U.S. media outlets are less able to undertake. While the center is not associated with actual Pulitzer Prizes, they take from the spirit of Joseph Pulitzer III, who was editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch half a century ago. Jon Sawyer, the center’s founding director, is former Washington Bureau Chief for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
