WaPo’s Style is Fresh Out of An Editor

WaPo has announced in an internal memo to staff that the search is on for an editor for the Arts and Style staff. With the recent shift of Richard Leiby to Local after two decades at Style there is a gaping hole to fill. Management says they have a strong in-house candidate but are willing to talk to other interested candidates both inside and outside the paper to fill this position and others that may arise in the future.

Behind the scenes, we hear that Style is struggling under the leadership of Ned Martel. What’s more, we’re told that one of  Martel’s two deputies is taking another position as Style’s Lynn Medford‘s deputy. Joe Heim is Martel’s remaining deputy. The new editor would work “elbow-to-elbow” with Heim.

With Rich Leiby’s departure to Local, our Arts and Style staffs now face the formidable challenge of trying to replace one of our smartest and most experienced editors.

We are looking for an editor to work elbow-to-elbow with Joe Heim to oversee the best collection of arts and culture critics in the business.
This is a demanding job for a discerning editor, someone who is comfortable handling news, reviews, criticism and analysis across the full spectrum of dance, art, galleries, classical and pop music, theater, movies, television, fashion and architecture. We are looking for someone with experience in arts coverage and familiarity with the Washington-area arts and culture community, who can help us produce fantastic print sections and create new strategies for increasing web traffic. This editor will work closely with Ned and Lynn to drive our coverage in daily and Sunday Style and the Sunday Arts section. We have a strong in-house candidate, but we’re eager to talk to anyone, in house or from the outside, who is interested in this job or other Style positions in the future.

Please contact Kevin Sullivan (x46050) or Peter Perl (x46188) by May 13.
