We’re So Proud Of Us

Howard Kurtz writes today what is probably almost an annual column for him excoriating the papers that embarrassed themselves with “homerism” in their Pulitzer coverage, that is, only covered their own awards and ignored the broader awards: Yea, he’s talking about you, New Orleans Times-Picayune, Biloxi Sun Herald, Rocky Mountain News, Portland Oregonian, San Diego Union-Tribune, Dallas Morning News and Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“When I looked at the coverage in some of the winning papers, I was, well, embarrassed. Some of them simply ignored, or all but ignored, the Pulitzers won by others. So what if awards were given for exposing Duke Cunningham or Jack Abramoff or the Bush domestic surveillance program? We won! Us! Your hometown heroes!” Kurtz says. “I don’t want to detract from the fine work done by these papers, but I’ve got to note this outbreak of homerism. If Pulitzers are important enough to celebrate, then how can editors possibly justify leaving out the other awards?”

I.E., how can you possibly justify failing to mention how well the Post did this year, right?
