California Broken? There’s an App for That

Touted as “the ultimate civic engagement tool” DIY Democracy is a new app that puts harassing the government easier than ever.

For the record, we always thought “the ultimate civic engagement tool” was a newspaper. Oh well.

Anyway, the app allows you to send your local authorities notes about potholes and graffiti. It even has budget information handy.

We wanted to know what a politician err civil servant thought of this new app. “I’ve always been a strong proponent of civic engagement and using technology to bring people closer to government.” LA Council President Eric Garcetti tells FBLA.

“Using new media helps us fulfill the old-fashioned work of good constituent service. Apps that allow constituents to report problems in the community will allow us to more quickly respond to neighborhood needs. I’ve always been an early adopter of using new technologies such as blogs and social networking sites to communicate with Angelenos. I’ve met with some app developers and we are currently developing a state-of-the-art application that will put responsive government in Angelenos’ palms in the near future,” said Garcetti.
