On the front page of the website for San Francisco’s CBS Channel 5, there is a teaser mentioning that the most shared news article on Facebook is about one of the station’s own staff members. Certainly not the usual order of things.
At the end of a November 7 live report about the passage of California’s Prop 30, the screen goes split as reporter Anne Makovec throws it back to the anchor desk. At that point, for the briefest of moments, it’s possible to see cameraman Greg Welk’s POV suddenly thrust to the ground:
The assault took place in front of Oakland Technical High School. According to the station’s communication’s director Akila Bolden-Monifa, an unknown number of young assailants rushed up to Welk, punched him and fled away by car with his camera. The good news is that Welk suffered only minor injuries and was quickly released from hospital. Makovec was also, thankfully, not hurt.
