Perez Hilton–Up like the Rocket, Down Like the Stick?

ph31.jpg

Perez Hilton continues his domination of the celeb blogosphere. And of course, he was the first to share the happy news yesterday by letting readers know that he set another traffic record to his PerezHilton.com with 8.82 million page views in 24 hours. In his post, he credited the high volume to “building momentum and keeping it going from the wonderful media attention” he’s managed to snag in recent weeks. Of course it helps that the main names he covers have had a rough few weeks (hello, Britney and Lindsay).
A profile in the New York Times doesn’t hurt, either. In the article, TMZ topper Harvey Levin called him “edgy” and “aggressive” and the writer noted that he makes enough money to employ family members and pay for a two-bedroom apartment in a gated community.

So where does he go from here? A close friend of FBLA who works at a famous magazine reminded me that all the NYT glory comes with a price.

Everyone knows that once they do a story about you and all the old white people know who you are, you’re on your way down. You’re no longer edgy or hot.

We’ll see…

More Staff Changes at Variety

Guest editor Chris Gardner delivers!

While the news of Elizabeth Guider’s appointment as Editor of The Hollywood Reporter is still fresh, there are a few other staff changes over at Variety that are interesting to point out. Former InStyle staffer Monica Corcoran, who joined Variety last year and has been serving as style editor and Stylephile blogger, has left the Wilshire Boulevard offices. I’m told she’s headed to the LA Times.

Variety’s film staff has also seen some recent changes with the departure of box-office editor Ian Mohr who exited for a vp post in development and production with NY-based producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ production shingle. Also, fairly new film reporter Peter Gilstrap didn’t work out in the V offices and has already left the building.

First frozen psuedo-yogurt, now foot rubs. Why not splurge and go for the combo?

National Archives Selling Historic Films on Amazon

kruschev1.jpg

Amazon and a California subsidiary, CustomFlix Labs, will make and sell DVDs of footage from the Universal Newsreel collection in the National Archives. according to the Washington Post.

The first six DVDs became available on Amazon July 16 and include scenes of the famous 1959 “Kitchen Debate” between then-Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev in a model American kitchen on display in Moscow. Other footage shows a youthful Fidel Castro after the communist revolution in Cuba, along with reports about Hawaii becoming a state, and the Soviet space program.

The DVDs from the CustomFlix Labs DVD on Demand program are produced only when a customer makes a purchase and can be delivered within 24 hours.

While the deal is a boon for the National Archives and Amazon, it’s less than fabulous for smaller footage archives, who can’t compete with the $19.95 charge.

Final Posts On Comic-Con?

chdarling_3.jpgWe were under the impression that Comic-Con was over. But don’t tell that to the LAT or the OC Weekly or, really, any other media outlet that can’t stop live blogging about it.

Apparently, Sunday was less of a convention wrap-up than it was the Last Day of Nerd Camp. And nobody, but nobody, wanted to say goodbye.

Too bad, geeks. Roll up your Superman sleeping bags and get on the bus. Y’all have day jobs to get back to.

Don’t you?

Hollywood Reporter Snags Guider From Variety: This Means War

99orter_logo.jpg

Variety Executive Editor Elizabeth Guider has been named Editor of The Hollywood Reporter. Staff members at THR were informed of the appointment just after 11 a.m. Monday morning, sources confirmed.

Guider replaces Cynthia Littleton in the post, who departed THR in March along with deputy film editor/Risky Business blogger Anne Thompson who both went down Wilshire Boulevard to take editor positions at Variety (Littleton is deputy editor for news development and Thompson is deputy editor of Variety.com). Getting Guider is somewhat of a coup for THR considering that the trade paper has been losing staff left and right as of late, not to mention that many of Variety’s hires over the past few years have been former THR staffers. A journalist who has worked for both trades told FBLA:

This certainly means war. The rivalry between the trades should be revitalized, after the Reporter seemed down for the count. And that’s great news for the industry which always champions having two trades they can play against each other,
