‘SB Nation’ Launches Regional LA Sports Site

Perhaps spurred on by ESPN’s recent entry into the world of regional online sports content, the popular sports blog SB Nation has launched a regional LA site, SB nation Los Angeles, covering sports news in and around the Southland.

Here’s what editor Eric Stephen had to say about the new site:

We have assembled quite a staff of writers, all of whom you may have read on various SB Nation blogs. Our great Los Angeles blogs True Blue LA, Halos Heaven, Silver Screen and Roll, Clips Nation, Anaheim Calling, Jewels From The Crown, Conquest Chronicles, and Bruins Nation will continue to provide high quality, in depth coverage of L.A. sports, including many of the same writers you will see here. Be sure to find out more information on our staff on the bottom left corner of the page.

The Red Carpet is the blog portion of the site, where we will provide short commentary, links, stories, and videos compiled by the SB Nation Los Angeles staff.

We will have a weekly Top Five, where we explore and rank various things related to Los Angeles sports. Our first foray is a look at the top five most popular athletes in Los Angeles sports.

Yeah, about that last part — at first glance this Fishie sees an awful lot of lists about “best” this and “top” that on the site. Makes us a little nervous, but we’re total dude when it comes to sports, so we’re willing to give it a shot.

Adrian Grenier: Twitter is the New Publicist

Entourage’s Adrian Grenier doesn’t have a publicist, nor, apparently, does he think needs one thanks to Twitter. “I’m no stranger to self promotion,” Grenier told the Wall Street Journal. “I find it first of all more authentic when you put a bit of your creative touch to what you’re trying to share. I think [Twitter has] brought the creativity back to promotion.”

Guess so. But if that’s true, Grenier better starting tweeting up a shitstorm about his show Entourage — because this season’s debut only drew 2.4 million viewers, down 25% from last year.

KNBC Traffic Reporter Paul Johnson Dead at 75

Paul Johnson, morning traffic reporter for NBC4′s ‘Today in L.A.’, passed away Tuesday after a battle with brain cancer. From the station’s website:

The well-known and well-liked baritone-voiced Paul underwent brain surgery in January and remained off air while recovering.

Earlier this year, viewers flooded NBCLA with e-mails, phone calls and bags of letters asking where and why Johnson was off the air. Today in L.A. reported Johnson had a brain tumor. Once it was made public that Johnson was ill, the outpouring of support was truly amazing.

Johnson joined NBC4′s on-air team in 1988. Prior to that he worked as a reporter and announcer for a number of Los Angeles radio stations, including KXEZ, KSRF, KZLA and KIIS-FM.

Wonder Woman Gets A Makeover

“She looks ready for Goth Day at the Sherman Oaks Galleria,” writes Nikki Finke of Wonder Woman’s new costume. In addition to a new look. DC Comics are giving her a re-written storyline and porn star boobs. And while both are ridiculous, let’s get back to her clothes. Wonder Woman’s costume is iconic. Don’t screw up a classic. And if you’re going to, don’t let comic book artists play fashion designer. Because you might end up with something like this:

Job Cuts at Playboy

Playboy Enterprises Inc. has announced plans to lay off more employees, for an annual savings of $3 million. While the company won’t say how many jobs are being eliminated, Dylan Stableford at The Wrap has some hints as to who might be shown the door:

An individual with knowledge of the situation said the cuts are all high-ranking, highly-paid corporate executives.

Among them: two chiefs in the financial department, one in human resources and the head of administrative services. (All will get three months notice and then their severance.)

For once it’s the higher-ups – and not the bunnies’ bums – that are feeling the squeeze.

Roger Ebert Has a New Cook Book

Roger Ebert, the sage of Twitter – a critic whose reviews are often more entertaining than the films – cancer survivor and all around interesting dude has written a cook book.

AP’s Caryn Rousseau writes:

The idea for his book came after a 2008 blog post he wrote about rice cookers prompted hundreds of comments, with many readers including their favorite recipes. “I think I was somewhat frustrated by not being able to eat and I wanted to live vicariously,” the 68-year-old said during an interview at his Chicago home, his laptop computer speaking his typed answers.

The book includes many of those comments, as well as more than two dozen recipes for dishes such as chili, risotto, jambalaya and oatmeal — Ebert’s favorite. He took a witty and funny tone when writing it; he says he didn’t want it to sound too specialized or difficult.

He’s so cool.

Here’s the pre-order on Amazon.

Journalist Tells of Sexual Harrassment by Police at G20 Summit

Reporter Amy Miller of the Alternative Media Centre relays the experience of her arrest and detention while covering the protests of the G20 Summit:

I was told I was going to be raped. I was told that I was going to be gang banged. I was told that they were going to make sure that I was never going to want to act as a journalist again by making sure that I would be repeatedly raped while I was in jail. While I was in the detention center, I saw numerous young women who were completely strip searched, who were strip-searched by male officers. And one young woman who was coming out, who was completely traumatized, said she had had a finger put up her.

Journalists at G20 Summit Arrested, Threatened With Rape, Mainstream Press Doesn’t Notice

Journalists and female protesters are speaking out about being arrested and mistreated during the G20 Summit. Accusations include threats of rape, male officers strip-searching females, and sexual assault. Lfpress.com reports:

“I was throttled by a cop and later threatened with rape,” Amy Miller, of the Alternative Media Centre, said. “I saw young women being strip searched by men.”

Maryam Adriangi, of Toronto Community Mobilization Network, said she was also threatened with rape.

“I was harassed by police and had racist and sexist comments made against me,” Adriangi said.

Oddly enough, little attention is being paid by the mainstream media to these horrific allegations. Stories by the LA Times and NY Times mention police violence against protesters, but not sexual threats and assaults. Popular media blogs like Romenesko and Gawker have also failed to cover the story.

Jezebel, however, is all over it.

E.R. Doctors Call For an End to Youth Culture

And the Los Angeles Times reports on it. Young people, it seems, are going to these music events called “raves” and taking drugs. At the Electric Daisy Carnival, held this past weekend at the Coliseum, 120 of the 185,000 attendees were taken by paramedics to the hospital, many (but not all) for drug intoxication. And E.R. doctors are shocked that this sort of tomfoolery could take place at a government-run facility, according to the LAT:

In an interview Monday, Dr. Marc Futernick, medical director of emergency services at California Hospital Medical Center, called it “unconscionable” for a publicly owned facility such as the Coliseum to host raves.

“I don’t know why our elected … leaders would allow these activities to take place,” Futernick said.

“This is basically a government-encouraged … drug fest. That’s the wrong message,” said Dr. Brian Johnston, director of the emergency room at White Memorial Medical Center. “It’s putting people at risk unnecessarily. It’s putting people’s health at risk.”

He went on to add, “Kids should restrict their drug use to private house parties, abandoned warehouses, or any underground event where no police or emergency medical staff are standing by.” Wait, we made that last part up.
