Former Fishbowler Tina Dupuy on Viewpoint Tonight!

Tina Dupuy, a FishbowlLA alumnus, syndicated columnist and The Contributor editor-in-chief, will be appearing tonight — in just a minute, really — on Current TV’s Viewpoint with Eliot Spitzer to talk politics. John Fugelsang will guest host.

This isn’t the first time Dupuy has made a television appearance, and it certainly won’t be the last, but we get excited every time. Show starts at 5 pm PT, and we’ll be tuning in.

TLC Reality Show Has Vegas Worried

Following up an item from last month, Vegas man-about-town Robin Leach checks back in to a major topic of Sin City conversation. Locals are increasingly fearful that the upcoming TLC reality series Vegas High Rollers will bathe the Strip in an exaggerated negative light. To which FishbowlLA replies, what else is new?

That’s the M.O. of reality TV. To orchestrate and amp up the confrontations, no matter how real, followed by many sweaty hours in the editing room. It’s a well-worn cliffhanger-pinwheel process seemingly re-confirmed by one of Leach’s sources:

“The truth is that it was a different project that they signed on to, and it has gone in a direction they hoped would never happen. They are totally frustrated. The producers who also shoot Real Housewives episodes promised this would be different – about powerful women who have made it on their own. They know Vegas is a small community where everybody knows everybody involved, not like Real Housewives in much bigger cities.”

Pitch Beauty and Fashion Stories to Bridal Guide

As “America’s Most Read Bridal Magazine,” each copy of Bridal Guide gets passed around to about 30 readers, giving enterprising writers a chance to show off their chops in the worlds of beauty, home design, fashion, honeymoons, wedding planning and social issues. The book is also focused on how to make the big day affordable, without sacrificing quality.

“We understand that not every couple can afford a celebrity-style wedding, so we offer inspirational ideas along with affordable ways to make their wedding fantasies come true,” said editor-in-chief Diane Forden. “We’re always open to new pitches, but we need someone who is very connected to the wedding industry.”

Time Warner Cable Goes on the Defensive

It might be time to start making alternative plans to watch the Los Angeles Lakers next week if you don’t have Time Warner Cable.

The cable provider fired a shot on Wednesday as to why they’ve been unable to reach a deal with their competition after rejecting a proposal from Cox Cable:

“With the Los Angeles Lakers, LA Galaxy and Los Angeles Sparks, two networks and unprecedented behind-the-scenes programming, Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes are delivering tremendous value for Southern California sports fans. Any assertion that we are the highest priced regional sports outlet in the country is simply untrue; as a significant buyer of regional sports across the country, we know that there are higher priced regional sports networks, including Root Sports that we buy from DirecTV. Cox and DirecTV know that there is no regional sports network anywhere in the country that is offered on an optional tier — that would be unprecedented. If Cox or DirecTV choose not to carry our networks, we and their customers will be very disappointed but we are confident there will be other alternatives for their customers to see this highly-anticipated Lakers season.”

Ora TV’s David Begnaud Breaks Some Ann Coulter News

KTLA reporter David Begnaud knew he was taking a risk when he left the confines of traditional TV reporting to join Larry King’s new home, Ora TV. But already, he says he is basking in the ability of the online network’s second show NewsBreaker to report on news as it happens.

This morning happens to coincide with Begnaud’s first exclusive. After hearing about an open letter written by Special Olympics ambassador John Franklin Stephens to Ann Coulter in response to the latter’s now infamous Obama R-word tweet, he tracked the gentleman down and got him to read his letter on camera.

“I said to my team, ‘It’s one thing to read the open letter but it’s much more powerful to see him read it,” Begnaud tells FishbowlLA via telephone. “It’s sort of personal for me, because I grew up in Louisiana with a mentally handicapped aunt and my mother has a company that takes care of the developmentally disabled.”

Michael Ian Black Imparts Twitter Wisdom to Madeleine Brand

Sometimes a new gig means a new Twitter handle. Such was the case for Madeleine Brand, who recently made the leap from public radio station KPCC to a TV gig on KCET’s “SoCal Connected.” Her Twitter handle of choice was her name, but that was already taken, leaving Brand unsure how to, well, re-Brand. That’s when author and comedian Michael Ian Black, a man with 1.2 million Twitter followers and a whole lot of opinions, stepped in.

Madeleine Brand eventually settled on the sweet and simple @TheMadBrand. We’re following.

Jamie Reno Claims a Dozen 2012 San Diego Press Club Awards

At last night’s 2012 San Diego Press Club Awards, another personal mark of achievement was set by Jamie Reno. The cancer survivor, singer-songwriter and busy journalist officially claimed a record dozen citations, including a record-tying seven first places.

Reno won these honors for his work with ESPN.com, KPBS Newsweek/The Daily Beast, newsmax.com and the North County Times. He has been a local Newsweek correspondent for many years and is no stranger to previous San Diego Press Club ceremonies.

Patch was also celebrating after last night’s event. Its San Diego area sites were second only to U-T San Diego in terms of total prizes claimed (nine first places, 24 total awards).

Write for Vegans at VegNews

VegNews“Think, eat, thrive” is the tagline of this veg-friendly book, which means the mag goes beyond recipes. Though it started out as a freebie newspaper at local health food shops, as vegan culture went more mainstream, so did the pub. And you can land a byline by catering your story to anyone who is interested in cutting back on carnivore habits.

“I would say there have been a few studies recently that have come out that say a lot of people are reducing their meat consumption and trying out things like meatless Mondays,” said editorial director Elizabeth Castoria. “Definitely in terms of who our audience is, there is an ever growing awareness of the potential to eat in a healthy and compassionate way that wasn’t there five or 10 years ago.”

The Stage is Set for a Scintillating Hitchcock Adaptation

Deadline’s Mike Fleming was one of the first this morning to the news that after many years of failed attempts, Broadway adaptation rights for Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window have finally been secured. The lucky winning bidders are director Jay Russell and producer Charlie Lyons, whose previous film collaborations include Ladder 49 and The Water Horse.

In recent years, there have been various pick-ups on the 1954 classic. Shia Labeouf fronted 2007′s Disturbia, which was later challenged in court by the estate controlling the rights to Rear Window (the plaintiffs lost). Meanwhile, in 2009, Jason Sudeikis and January Jones did a questionable SNL riff featuring a very flatulent Grace Kelly.

Casting is going to be key. The 1998 ABC-TV movie remake for example very cleverly chose Christopher Reeve to play the James Stewart character, opposite Darryl Hanah as his concerned girlfriend.

Nicole Kidman Shares Some Stanley Kubrick Memories

LACMA’s upcoming Stanley Kubrick film retrospective begins November 9 with Fear and Desire and ends December 15 with Eyes Wide Shut. There will also be a separate exhibit at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, preceded by a special November 7 celebration evening event hosted by Malcolm McDowell.

Today, via Hollywood Reporter reporter Merle Ginsberg, there is also a very intriguing oral history of Eyes Wide Shut from co-star Nicole Kidman. The actress tantalizingly reminds that some much more explicit footage she was comfortably coaxed into by the late filmmaker was cut from the movie. Kidman also confirms that Kubrick was no fan of spoilers:

People have asked me if Stanley ever told us what Eyes Wide Shut was about — and the answer is no. He didn’t believe in interpretation. He always said, “Never say no to an idea — you never know how that idea will ignite another idea.” He also said: “Never put me on a pedestal. When someone’s on a pedestal, there’s no creativity.” That’s how I approach every creative person now — it does not help to glorify them.
