BuzzFeed LA Launch Party at Mondrian’s Skybar

FishbowlLA braved the harsh L.A. drizzle on Thursday night to hit Skybar, where BuzzFeed staffers and friends were celebrating the launch of the website’s new Los Angeles bureau. Top BuzzFeed brass was in attendance: CEO and founder Jonah Peretti, president Jon Steinberg, editor-in-chief Ben Smith, executive VP of video Ze Frank, and probably more we didn’t recognize.

We spotted Nate Silver in the crowd, as well as Julia Boorstin of CNBC, comedian Chelsea Peretti, LA Times VP of Communications Nancy Sullivan and former Good magazine editor Ann Friedman, who tolerated some gushing on our behalf over her delightful Tumblr and column, #Real Talk.

But we don’t have pictures of any of these lovely people, because we forgot our camera. We only managed this one grainy cell phone picture before giving up and hitting the open bar:

That’s Ann-Marie Thomson of SYCO television, Grantland editor Emily Yoshida and BuzzFeed’s Los Angeles bureau chief Richard Rushfield being blinded by my cell phone camera.

Author Michael Levin Pays Tribute to Motivational Guru Zig Ziglar

The death on Wednesday of pioneering motivational author and speaker Zig Ziglar has reverberated far and wide.

Here for example is how LA Times celebrity blogger Christie D’Zurilla initially reacted on Twitter:

Saturday’s memorial service in Plano, Texas will be live-streamed. Leading up to that, one of the very best ways to remember Ziglar is to read an essay published earlier this year by New York Times bestselling author Michael Levin. It begins:

The last time I saw Zig Ziglar, I was one of 17,000 in attendance at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, where he was speaking as part of a program of superstars, including Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and Joe Montana. He was onstage accompanied by his daughter, Julie Ziglar Norman, because Zig had suffered a fall a couple of years before that and nobody wanted him to fall again, especially onstage, and especially in front of 17,000 people.

Seven Months Later, Disappearance of Gavin Smith Remains an Excruciating Mystery

As we head into a rare, rainy weekend in LA, the mysterious disappearance of 20th Century Fox distribution executive Gavin Smith is set to cross the seven-month mark. With no signs that his baffling May 1 drive-to-nowhere will be solved any time soon.

FishbowlLA reached out to America’s Most Wanted to find out whether an October 12 segment about the case elicited any solid leads. We’ve also tried, without success at press time, to get comment from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detective overseeing the investigation. If we hear back from either party, this item will be updated below.

The circumstances of Smith’s vanishing into thin air are as confounding as the deaths of Ronni Chasen and Natalie Wood (and, beyond LA, that of Natalee Holloway). With the big difference of course that there is no certainty at present that Smith, a one-time UCLA basketball star, has in fact perished.

NBC Anchor Turned Mystery Writer Kelly Lange Plotting New Main Character

After three novels featuring fictional LA news anchor and crime solver Maxi Poole, author Kelly Lange tells The Valley Chronicle’s Jenna Hunt ahead of a book signing event this weekend in Hemet that she’s changing things up with her next book. The former NBC LA anchor says her sixth tome will feature a deceased designer trying to solve her murder from the vantage point of the after life. Shades of The Lovely Bones.

Hunt’s feature article provides a wonderful, breezy overview of how Lange successfully segued from conveying the real news to conjuring up some sensational mysteries of her own. Here is how it all began:

The budding writer in Lange grew when she started reading mysteries to relax between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. when her “crazy work hours,” left her feeling wired. She said she decided to start writing her own mysteries in the twilight hours from her Los Angeles home in the early 1990s.

Freelancers Everywhere Welcome to Pitch San Antonio

San Antonio may have a bunch of local pubs, but San Antonio Magazine bills itself as being the ‘premier magazine’ of the city. “Our [magazine] definitely stands out as being the most comprehensive,” said editor-in-chief Rebecca Fontenot. After being bought out by Open Sky Media in the summer of 2011, the book underwent a major overhaul that changed the logo and freshened up the content, 60 to 75 percent of which is freelance-written. The best part is, you don’t have to live in the area to pitch.

“It’s not necessary that freelancers be in San Antonio, but,” said Fontenot, “a familiarity with the city is important.”

For example, an out-of-state home and garden writer can localize an article on new home construction by interviewing a San Antonio-based builder who is following national trends in his design.

Seth MacFarlane Crashes Professor Mann’s Contemporary Film Class

What a great idea. Instead of models escorting winners off the Oscar stage next February, it will be college students. Even better, per a press release from the Academy this morning, 2013 show host Seth MacFarlane announced the official launch of the related online contest by crashing UCLA professor Denise Mann’s (pictured) “Overview of Contemporary Film Industry” course:

MacFarlane announced “The Oscar Experience College Search” presented by The Academy and mtvU. College students who are interested in pursuing careers in film – writing, directing, producing, acting and more – are encouraged to vie for an opportunity to appear live onstage to deliver Oscar statuettes to telecast presenters. In addition to appearing on the Oscar show, winners will be flown to Los Angeles and provided hotel accommodations.

So, to all campus cinema buffs, here’s the deal. Think about the question, “How will you contribute to the future of movies?”, put together a video answer and then head over to the Academy’s Facebook page.

LA Times Beijing Bureau Chief Barbara Demick Earns Stanford Journalism Award

The 2012 Shorenstein Journalism Award that LA Times Beijing bureau chief Barbara Demick will accept at Stanford early next year comes with a very impressive descriptor. She is being honored, says the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center, for “her innovative and extraordinarily sensitive reporting on Northeast Asia over the past decade.”

Demick has been with the LA Times since 2001 and the paper’s Beijing bureau chief since 2008. She has also earned many accolades for her fall 2010 book Nothing to Envy, about the lives and experiences of a select group of North Korean defectors. In a recent Q&A with thebeijinger.com, here’s how she answered when asked to recount her most shocking or heartbreaking story about the DPRK:

“There is a story in my book that the doctor told me. She had a friend, another woman doctor, whose husband and son died of starvation. When she expressed her condolences, the friend said it was good that they were gone because she didn’t have the extra people to feed. That story stuck with me more than any others.”

David Wild Revisits the James Franco-Anne Hathaway Oscar Disaster

This week’s episode of Allison Hope Weiner’s Lip.tv interview program Media Mayhem is fantastically entertaining. The guest is David Wild, who got a job straight out of college with Esquire magazine, moved on from there to a staff position with Rolling Stone before winding up (with a little help from Steven Spielberg) as a go-to guy for the Emmys, Grammys and various other awards show/celebrity tributes.

One of Wild’s Oscar writing brushes was the year that James Franco and Anne Hathaway co-hosted. Weiner asks Wild for his thoughts on why it went so wrong:

“I cannot explain it other than I felt like it was the worst blind date in show business history. It was the homecoming queen or head of drama club trying hard in the sweetest possible to put on a show, and a guy who for whatever reason I don’t think wanted to host the show. In fact he went on Jimmy Kimmel and announced his intention to be the worst host in Oscar history. So on a certain level, the show was a tremendous success, because he achieved that goal.”

Local PA Announcer David Courtney Dies at 56

Los Angeles lost a legend on Thursday as David Courtney, the voice of the Los Angeles Kings, Clippers and Angels, died at the age of 56.

Outside of his work with the local sports teams, Courtney provided sports and traffic reports for 710 ESPN-KSPN, AM 830 KLAA and 99.9 FM. The cause of death is unknown but his last tweet on Wednesday stated that he was awaiting an angiogram at the hospital.

Below is a statement from Los Angeles Kings executive Luc Robitaille:

David was tremendously passionate about the Kings, our fans and the game of hockey. His time with the Kings dates back to the mid 1970s both in our PR office as our public relations director and also with work he did in our video department before he took over full-time Public Announcing duties at the Forum and STAPLES Center. In the arena he was an institution – he was the voice of the Kings – and his work added so much to the live, in-game experience for our fans as it did for the Clippers and Angels as well. Next season would have been David’ 35th year with our franchise, and on behalf of the entire Kings organization and AEG we are incredibly saddened by this news and we send our deepest condolences to his wife Janet and the rest of the Courtney family.

Madeleine Brand in Talks to Join KCRW (Updated)

At the end of an interesting Los Angeles Magazine story about Madeleine Brand‘s departure from KPCC comes some uplifting news: Brand may soon return to radio. As the mag explains:

She’s… in talks with KCRW to launch a program in the same 9 a.m. slot as [Alex] Cohen and [A] Martínez. “It will be just like The Madeleine Brand Show, but better,” she says with maybe a hint of something beyond enthusiasm in her voice. Because in the well-mannered world of public radio, those are fighting words.

The news isn’t such a shock – just weeks ago KCRW general manager Jennifer Ferro told the Los Angeles Times that the station had an eye on Brand. But for her to return in direct competition with the co-host that was the catalyst for her leaving KPCC, well, that would add an especially delicious chapter to the melodrama of the last few months.

FishbowlLA Set Visit: SoCal Connected

The views from the fifth and sixth floors of KCET’s glass-encased offices at The Pointe in Burbank are spectacular, offering panoramic vistas of next-door neighbors NBC LA, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Forest Lawn in the southern distance and more. Another big difference from the station’s previous red-brick HQ on Sunset Boulevard is that employees are now ensconced in an open-cubicle set-up as sleek as that of a Madison Avenue ad agency.

But these are not the only reasons for the renewed sense of excitement at KCET. Thanks to the expansion of SoCal Connected to four nights a week, the addition of Madeleine Brand to the show’s talent ranks, a recent merger with San Francisco’s Link Media and the resulting imminent arrival of new chief strategy officer Paul Mason, this viewer-supported TV station is very clearly and boldly trying to re-invent the jettisoned PBS model.

SoCal Connected shoots two shows on Monday and another two on Wednesday, with a repeat broadcast Fridays. As FishbowlLA sat at the back of the control room yesterday watching the production of tonight’s November 29 broadcast, we were reminded of that scene in Broadcast News where William Hurt’s character shows nervous newbie Albert Brooks how to properly sit on a sports jacket. TV news is all about the smallest of details.

Drug-Smuggling Tijuana Architect Tells Local Media He Was Coerced

On Sunday, U-T San Diego border reporter Sandra Dibble conveyed to readers the shocking case of well-known Tijuana architect (and U.S. citizen) Eugenio Velázquez. After being caught at the border trying to smuggle 12 pounds of cocaine into San Diego, he is scheduled for sentencing in December.

The coverage likely had a lot to do with an even more shocking letter, sent on Tuesday by Velázquez to local Tijuana media. Dibble has confirmed with the 51-year-old man’s attorney that the correspondence is from him. Per Dibble’s follow-up item:

“My actions were the result of a situation of high risk, threat and intimidation,” Velázquez writes. “What happened to me at the beginning of March cannot be understood outside of the context of the fight against organized crime and the consequences for citizens. The victims of this situation are not only the dead, who number in the thousands, and those who mourn them, but also those of us who have had the misfortune of calling the attention of those who consider us easy prey for their objectives, which has been devastating for me and (my family).”

Nikki Finke Goes Down Newsweek Memory Lane

From her 2012 World Wide Web stronghold, Nikki Finke circles back at newsweekmemories.org to the early 1980s halcyon days of print. Back then, she didn’t call the shots quite the way she does now.

‘I’d specifically told the Newsweek powers-that-be that I didn’t want Washington,’ she writes. ‘So of course they put me in DC.’

Finke goes on to recall a tumultuous four days that began with her flying on Air Force One to the Augusta National golf course and then quickly returning to the White House beat because of some overseas events in Beirut. The real drama however kicked off a few days later, after that week’s issue was put to bed late:

I slept all day Monday. On Tuesday, October 25, I woke up, put on a very slick St John’s skirt suit, broke up at lunch with a married lover (who famously divorced his wife soon afterwards) and prepared to grab the DC-NY air shuttle for a quick dinner in Manhattan when I swung by the Newsweek bureau just to check in. Big Mistake.

Hours Before Freeway Accident, KKLA-FM Host Frank Pastore Shared Prophetic Observation

A mind-boggling audio clip has been added to the KKLA-FM website information page for Frank Pastore, the weekday afternoon show host critically injured in a November 19 freeway accident. It was posted at the request of his wife Gina after she told a reporter for the Christian Post that he would want it that way.

Just hours before the 210 freeway accident in Duarte, here’s what Pastore said on his show as he addressed the issue of life after death and secular science’s research into whether humans have souls:

“You guys know I ride a motorcycle, right? At any moment, especially with the idiot people who cross the diamond lane into my lane, without any blinkers – not that I’m angry about it – at any minute, I could be spread all over the 210. But that’s not me, that’s my body parts. And that key distinction undergirds the entire Judeo-Christian world view.”
