Google Books Bad Deal for Berkeley Library?

Peter Brantley, one of the University of California Library’s negotiators with Google, rethinks the whole deal. At least, we think he does. He’s quite a the dab hand with a metaphor:
We felt special, invited to loud weddings on far away islands of adventure; in the quiet we may wonder if we were given broken jewelry….We might have chosen to hold off the sequined cloaks of confidence that wrapped our suitor’s gifts.
Loud weddings? Sequined cloaks? Berkeley librarians really have moved away from that stereotype.
Anyway, he thinks the deal wasn’t fair and that the library should have dealt directly with publishers and authors.
