LA High School Grad is Apple of Tech Journalism’s Eye

Thanks to a flurry of effusive media coverage, 18-year-old graduating Milken Community High School student Mark Gurman (pictured) is getting a unique sendoff as he prepares to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Abor this fall.

Gurman’s ability to publish scoop after Wall Street Journal-beating Apple scoop on the blog 9to5mac.com was first heralded this week by CNN Money/Fortune magazine. From there, he has been trumpeted by The Huffington Post, NBC Southern California, LA Weekly and The Daily Mail. With more dings sure to follow.

Our favorite perspective on what this all means for Gurman comes from LA Weekly’s Dennis Romero. At the very end of the piece, the reporter wonders if the newly anointed blogging star might continue down this path professionally:

So, is he ready for a long life of journalism? Noooo! He’s a smart kid, remember? “I want to pursue journalism as a passion in the future, but I plan on steering into business and computer science,” Goldman said.

Smart kid indeed.
