LA Times Re-Opens Shuttered O.C. Printing Plant
Production problems prompted management to re-open the printing plant in Orange County on Friday morning, less than a week after it had been closed. The last remaining LA Times pressroom, the Olympic Plant, was plagued with issues that caused the Friday edition of the paper to be delivered late, and in some cases with sections missing. Pressman Ed Padgett chronicled the production problems on his blog, and while some details may not be easy for a layperson to understand, it makes for an interesting read.
It is unclear how long the O.C. plant will remain open. What is clear is that without a second printing plant, the LA Times has no fallback when production problems arise.
The O.C. plant was closed as a cost-cutting measure, but the savings may not have been worth it. The costs that arose from this printing crisis include refunds to advertisers, the loss of subscribers, and overtime pay to workers. Then there’s the cost of a PR crisis and damaged employee morale, which isn’t so easy to chart on a spreadsheet – but is expensive nonetheless.
