Do you know many people who use the expression “popped [his/her] cork”? Me neither. So the phrase caught my eye in today’s unsigned LAT editorial slamming Bill O’Reilly for cordially suggesting on his radio show that Michael Kinsley might benefit from having his head cut off. (“And maybe when the blade sinks in, he’ll go, ‘Perhaps O’Reilly was right.’”)
Anyway, back to cork-popping. From today’s editorial:
What popped O’Reilly’s cork was an editorial one week ago on the Newsweek controversy.
What seems to have popped her cork, however, is an article by a woman that we did run.
So: I think it’s safe to suggest that the principal author of the unsigned editorial criticizing O’Reilly for criticizing Kinsley was the K-man himself. Why not just sign the thing? I mean, the dude said his head should get cut off. Nobody’s going to begrudge Kinsley for fighting back.
