Layoffs To Come At Sony Pictures

sony-pictures.jpgOuch- yet another Hollywood studio is making cuts. According to an unnamed LA Times source, Sony Pictures is going to eliminate approximately 300 jobs through both layoffs and the elimination of open positions. The Times was unable to get confirmation of the layoffs from a Sony spokesperson, but the source says the layoffs could begin as soon as next week. Faltering DVD sales and a mixed year at the box office is only part of the problem-

The studio also is under pressure from its parent company, whose core consumer electronics business is reeling from the bad economy. Sony Corp. recently slashed 8,000 positions out of its 180,500-member workforce.

Local jobs lost is a sad thing. But if it saves us from a “Pink Panther 3″, well- it’s a mixed blessing.
