In the wake of some major grumbling from KPCC fans about the new weekday morning pairing on KPCC 89.3 FM of Madeleine Brand with former 710 ESPN AM reporter A Martinez, that peanut gallery now has something new to chew on. She’s leaving.
Per an announcement today on the SCPR website, Brand has chosen to pursue “other career opportunities.” There’s no mention of the fracas surrounding recent changes to her program, but that push-back likely factored into her decision. She will be replaced alongside Martinez by Alex Cohen (pictured), local anchor on the KPCC airwaves during the station’s broadcasts of All Things Considered and Marketplace. From today’s announcement:
“We are very fortunate to have in Alex a co-host with the combination of news judgment, experience and a lively, energetic on-air presence,” said vp of content Russ Stanton. “She has a range of experience in public broadcasting and journalism that few can match; she is smart, tenacious and insightful…”
Cohen began her professional career as a producer and director at NPR in Washington and returned to California as Los Angeles bureau chief for San Francisco’s KQED-FM… Away from the mike, she developed an interest in roller derby, playing under guise of Axles of Evil.
You read that right; this public radio personality doubles as a roller derby gal. She was in fact the trainer and choreographer for the Drew Barrymore movie Whip It. Congrats to Cohen, best of luck to Brand.

Update – 09/26/12: In an interview with Current magazine, Brand says the “outside offers just became too attractive” and that she is involved in a new, soon-to-be-announced LA venture.
