Press Club Awards Wrap-up

Some notes from the Los Angeles Press Club awards banquet Saturday night:

Biggest upset of the night: KCLU 88.3 FM, the public radio station hosted by California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, beats out “Airtalk”, “Left, Right and Center”, and “Which Way, LA?” for the Radio Talk/Public Affairs/Documentary award with a show called “Marine Life and Ocean Health.”

It’s good honoree Seymour Hersh wasn’t there because: His name was spelled ‘Hersch’ on the video screen.

Most enthusiastic cheering section: a tie between the Jewish Journal and KCRW tables.

Thoughts on opening speaker Antonio Villaraigosa: Some people look better in person than they do on television. Some people look worse. Villaraigosa is the only person I’ve met who looks exactly the same.

Patt Morrison owes Table 13 $22: She announced the wine was free. Apparently our waiter didn’t hear.

Best dressed:
Women- Teresa Strasser. Men- Russ Porter, who was pretty much the only guy to actually show up in black tie.
