ProPublica Staffer Wins I.F. Stone Medal
Longtime Bay Area reporter A.C. Thompson was just awarded the prestigious I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence for his work at ProPublica. Thompson has been on staff at ProPublica since 2008, after years working in the Bay Area alt-weekly world. He had previously won a George Polk award for his work at the San Francisco Bay Guardian.
Thompson was honored this year for his work in helping to uncover the New Orleans’ police role in the killing of citizen Henry Glover during the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Thompson took the time to thank SFBG editor Tim Redmond for putting him in the position to do great work throughout his career.
“Tim taught me that journalism is really civics — if you figure how government works you’ll discover the nodes of information that will help you put together a probative report. He trained me to be an investigative reporter.”
