Report: Fewer Mags are Shuttering This Year Than Last

magazines.jpg

All financial news right now is “better” when we all want “great.” So then we report/state/think the economy isn’t doing “well” because we want the economy to be rocketing upward. The fact is it’s improving. Which in reality is still crappy. And especially so for freelancers. Jason Fell at Folio writes:

Last year, when so many magazine publishers were scratching and clawing, trying to keep their businesses afloat despite the slumping economy, 279 magazines closed during the first half. So far this year, the rate at which titles are fading into oblivion has slowed dramatically. According to the latest report from online magazine database MediaFinder, only 87 titles have shut down through the first six months of the year.

Yes, it’s the difference between a slaughter fest and just a tiny massacre.
