Well, that’s as good a reason as any. Gervais explained his decision to return to hosting a third time during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show:
I wasn’t going to do it again, but there was loads of people in the press saying I’d never be invited back, and that’s why I said yes.
Gervais expressed astonishment that his appearance last year received so much criticism in the media. “I mean, you usually have to kill someone to get that many column inches.” He further defended his jabs at the audience: “I was just teasing them, you know. It wasn’t a room full of wounded soldiers. These are the richest, most privileged people in the world.” That remark elicited a round of applause from the crowd.
