Much mention has been made in the media about how the recent blockbuster sign-and-trade deal between the Lakers and Suns will allow Steve Nash to remain close to his Phoenix-based kids while chasing after that all-important first championship ring. Equally thrilled by this latest Mitch Kupchak slam dunk is Nash’s Kingston, Ontario-born cousin Ezra Holland, who co-runs the duo’s production company Meathawk.
“Meathawk was formed around April 2008, when we we made the Sixty Million Dollar Man film for Nike,” Holland tells FishbowlLA. “We are a truly international firm with bases in London, New York, LA and until very recently Phoenix. This is because we do not have an office specifically and tend to do our work on Steve’s dining room table or mine or in the back of a cab or on the plane. Also we live all over the place.”
Although there have been various reports that Nash and Holland will follow up (on the feature side) their 2010 ESPN Terry Fox doc with another in 2014 about soccer’s original superstar Pelé, Holland says the 2014-targeted project is presently in the air. A deal structure is still being being finalized with the legend’s reps.
What’s amazing is that Meathawk itself does not have talent agency representation. For now, Holland says that will remain the case. Which leaves just one more question – how did he and Nash come up with such an unforgettable production company name?
“Meathawk is the harmonious union of flight and fight, flower and power and strength and love and has absolutely no origin of any particular sense other than it seemed like a cool name for a business and our logo really kicks ass.”
