Spike Lee Disseminates the Wrong Thing

Washington Times reporter Kerry Picket and staff at The Smoking Gun spent part of yesterday exposing the very objectionable actions of LA resident Marcus Davonne Higgins. Since the middle of last week, Higgins – who on Twitter goes by the handle of @MACCAPONE – has been tweeting out to celebrities a South Florida address he claimed belonged to George Zimmerman, the man who shot Trayvon Martin.

Never mind the insensitivity (and possible criminal liability) of such an action. Greatly complicating matters is the fact that the information, which was re-tweeted by filmmaker Spike Lee last Friday, has now been shown to be completely incorrect. From the Smoking Gun report:

The original tweet was sent to Lee (and numerous other celebrities like Will Smith, 50 Cent, and LeBron James) last Friday afternoon by Higgins, a 33-year-old Los Angeles man… Higgins first began disseminating the address to his Twitter followers last Wednesday…

Ben Lyons Jumps from E! to Extra

Big news from the Hollywood press junket and red carpet fronts. When Ben Lyons next walks into a Beverly Hills Four Seasons interview suite or corrals 50 Cent outside an event for the rapper’s additional two, he will be doing so for a new E-tastic outlet.

Lyons, a congenial staple at E! News for the past five years, moved over March 1 to the Burbank headquartered, Grove broadcast-anchored Extra. His new home was launched about seven years after the founding of E! and is currently hosted by Mario Lopez.

“I’ve had my eye on Ben for a long time,” said Lisa Gregorisch-Dempsey, senior executive producer of Extra. “He’s an entertainment news wunderkind… Between his deep knowledge of entertainment and his close relationships in Hollywood, he will be a great addition.”

Keenan Cahill Gets Assist from ‘Cougar’ Chelsea Handler

On Monday, Chelsea Handler welcomed as her Chelsea Lately guest 15-year-old YouTube sensation Keenan Cahill. The Chicago teen, who suffers from Maroteaux-Lamy Syndrome, has exploded with his lip-synched versions of various pop hits.

It certainly pays to have fans like Handler, whom Cahill hilariously referred to as a “cougar” during his E! appearance. As part of his LA visit, the head-bobbing cover artist got to work with rapper (and rumored CL boyfriend) 50 Cent, who drops in starting at the 1:20 mark to help with Cahill’s latest redo, “Down On Me.”

259541.jpg50 Cent: Not the rapper, the price tag. In the face of cuts and other awful things, Steve Lopez reminds readers what they’re getting for 50 cents: “Although that money doesn’t buy you the same-size staff that was in place when I arrived seven years ago, those two quarters still buy you the biggest, best, most ambitious news-gathering operation west of the Hudson River.”

40758074.jpgIn Demand: Want to know how to make money off of articles, images and videos? Richard Rosenblatt, a guy you’ve probably never heard of, figured it out. “With blinding speed and little notice, Rosenblatt’s 2-year-old Demand Media Inc. has become one of the largest buyers of articles and video clips for the Web. It expects revenue of nearly $200 million this year and, more surprisingly, a healthy profit.”

youtubde2.jpgYouTube, YouWin!: From Jessica Guynn: “Google said late Monday that it has reached a deal with Viacom to protect the privacy of tens of millions of YouTube viewers. A judge had ordered Google, YouTube’s corporate parent, to hand over user data as part of the $1-billion copyright infringement case brought by Viacom.”
