It’s that time of year again when professional movie reviewers butt heads with a mind-numbing Adam Sandler comedy.

TheWrap’s Alonso Duralde sums up That’s My Boy as “two laughs, sprinkled over a giant bowl of revulsion.” But what really caught FishbowlLA’s attention is this critic’s suggestion that a final-act narrative turn “ranks among the most desperate and tasteless comedic plot twists in Hollywood history.”

Really? Wow, we might have to morbidly check out the June 18 Columbia Pictures release just to see what Duralde is retching about. Although no doubt the cat will soon be out the garbage bag via Twitter and Facebook.

Failed Actor Dishes About Jerry’s Famous Deli

Under the pseudonym of Jozef Rothstein, one-time wannabe LA actor Gene Duffy has compiled a comical look at his dogged pursuit of the Hollywood dream, funded by years of day-job toiling at Jerry’s Famous Deli in Studio City. For the book’s title, Duffy chose an expression he liked to use with co-workers when describing the daily pastrami-and-rye-clatter routine: As the Matzo Ball Turns.

Duffy is now safely back in his native Pennsylvania and due for his next book signing June 16. Speaking recently with the same local reporter who wrote about him when he headed west in the late 1990s, Duffy highlighted some friendly celeb customers (Adam Sandler, Shaquille O’Neal…) and not-so-great famous folks (Sharon Stone…). He also suggested that beyond the hundreds of auditions, he got a taste of another staple of the Tinseltown trample:

“From 2002 to 2010, I wrote five screenplays… I wrote one about football because that’s what I knew. But someone in the business told me there were too many football stories that I should use a different sport. So I wrote a hockey drama and shopped it around. The next time I saw it, it was on the screen without my name.”

Pepperdine Drops Libel Lawsuit Against Malibu Vlogger

Cary O’Neal, who goes by the YouTube and Facebook handle of “Mr. Malibu,” now admits he was wrong.

Contrary to his previous video reports “Pepperdine Recklessly Dumps Sewage on Malibu Beach” and “Luxury Beach Homes of Adam Sandler, Tom Hanks, David Duchovny and Pink Under Siege,” Pepperdine University was not the source of contaminated storm water runoff into Marie Canyon. The school filed an April 11 libel suit against O’Neal, which – according to the Malibu Surfside News – it has now agreed to drop in exchange for a public retraction. The paper reprinted the apology, received via email from O’Neal:

Please consider this letter a retraction of my statements. I acknowledge that these statements were inaccurate. Pepperdine does not operate the Malibu Mesa Water Reclamation Facility and does not discharge sewage or sewage effluent into Marie Canyon or any other location. Instead, Malibu Mesa is operated by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

Shaq May Be Venturing Into Funny Home Video Territory

Frank Holder’s excellent LA based comedy mag The Humor Mill has shared an intriguing exclusive. Apparently, Shaquille O’Neal and comedian Gary Owen shot a pilot for Tru TV. If the program is a go, it sounds like it will shoot out of Atlanta.

Per the report:

The show is tentatively titled Upload and we hear it is closely based around the ~~former~~ ABC program America’s Funniest Home Videos and will feature funny videos sent in from viewers. What sets the show apart is that Shaq and Gary will not only host, but they will also perform in sketches.

Adam Sandler and Jack and Jill made history Sunday night, walking away with 10 Razzies and sweeping every single category in the process. Jack and Jill is the only movie in the 32-year history of the Razzies to win every award.

The actor (and I use that term loosely) won not only for worst leading man but actress as well for his roles as Jack and Jill Sadelstein. In case you need proof that kids have absolutely no taste when it comes to movies, Sandler won for Best Actor in Jack and Jill at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards Saturday night.

“Adam Sandler has a pretty much basic attitude of, ‘No matter how dumb I make it, my fans are going to pay to see it,’” Razzies founder John Wilson said. “I guess it’s more about the complete lack of any genuine effort or concern or pride. An attitude of this is good enough, but when you consider what they’re charging for movie tickets today, it wasn’t good enough.”

Adam Sandler is Really, Really Bad at Acting

Adam Sandler‘s acting career has reached a new low.

The 2012 Razzie nominations were released on the eve of the Academy Awards, and Sandler led the way with a record 11 nods scattered over three films — Jack and Jill, Just Go with It and Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star.

(OK, how many of you have seen one of these three movies? We won’t judge.)

Sandler shattered Eddie Murphy‘s previous record of five nominations in 2007 for Norbit. And in a unique twist, Sandler was nominated for worst actor and worst actress for playing Jack and Jill Sadelstein.

“It’s almost karmic for someone to have made that much razz-able stuff in one year,” Razzies founder John Wilson told the Associated Press. “He has angered someone really powerful, I would say.”

Adam Sandler Regular Pens Patriotic Children’s Book

As a Hollywood writer, producer and actor, Allen Covert generally leans in the R-rated raunchy comedy direction. For that, you can thank his old NYU classmate Adam Sandler.

But Covert is also, believe it or not, a G-rated children’s author. Per a very intriguing Human Events interview, he is working in tandem with Cherry Tree, an LA digital publisher of “morally instructive” kids entertainment. Covert’s e-book, Tex the T. Rex, is about a patriotic dinosaur born on the Fourth of July. From the article by Human Events editor-at-large Jason Mattera:

“Unfortunately, many talented people in Hollywood find their values and politics do not reflect the content they create, and many movie themes are in direct contrast with over half of today’s American families,” said Covert. “This is especially reflected in children’s entertainment where no brand currently promotes a strong patriotic, pro-family or American values message.”

OC Couple’s Cell Phone is So Money

Remember all that business in Swingers about the (310) vs. (818)? Well, it’s been wonderfully and accidentally updated thanks to a couple that moved at the beginning of the year from Cleveland to the OC.

A wacky cell phone adventure involving Bob Gray and his girlfriend Liza Foster is now deservedly making the media rounds. After Gray inherited the 310 digits of writer-comedian Nick Swardson, this pair was able to make the Paris Hilton 2011 birthday party invite list and connect with various other show business folk. They are currently turning their one-degree-of-separation experiences into a movie script on the advice of Swardson pal Adam Sandler, who called in one day looking for the previous cell number owner.

Another Price is Right Model Files Sexual Harassment Suit

Andrew Blankstein of the LA Times has posted a sordid legal complaint filed yesterday in LA Superior Court by former Price is Right model Lanisha Cole (pictured).

Never mind that the defendants are namesakes for Adam Sandler and Michael Richards, something the reporter has to make clear in the first paragraph of his article. Beginning with the charge that show producer Richards started communicating with Cole at the end of 2009 by means of written messages delivered through go-between staffers, there’s all kinds of crazy stuff here, including allegations of a Richards romance with another model (Amber Lancaster) and this very unpleasant alleged September 2010 incident involving Sandler:

Ignoring these [KNOCK BEFORE ENTERING] signs, as well as the verbal and later physical protests of the several women who were in the dressing room at the time, Sandler marched into the dressing room, walked straight to where Cole was changing outfits, and began scolding her for her failure to wear a microphone…

Charting the Success of Dan Patrick and ‘The Danettes’

Despite the fact that Howard Stern has built an empire around the daily rote of interacting on-air with a colorful bunch of studio workmates, Dan Patrick met with resistance when he first pitched a similar radio show format after leaving ESPN in 2007.

As he tells Joe Flint of the LA Times, his new bosses were none too thrilled with the idea, but he held firm and today, his daily joshing with the “Danettes” – executive producers Paul Pabst and Todd Fritz, operations director Patrick “Seton” O’Connor, and Sports Illustrated blogger Andrew “McLovin” Perloff — is a key reason why the program has amassed a combined weekly radio, TV, and online audience of around 2.5 million. Patrick shares an interesting Hollywood comparison for his “Man Cave” ministrations:

“I don’t like it to be labeled a sports show,” Patrick said. “We’ve created almost a Truman Show, where you’re looking into this little world we’ve created, and we let you look in, warts and all.”

Where’s the first big scoop? That’s our question after keeping an eye on the initial efforts of former Page Six grand poobah Richard Johnson for Rupert Murdoch‘s The Daily.

With Johnson sitting shoulder-to-shoulder on the west coast with the likes of TMZ and Radar Online, it’s going to take more than tired rehashes of the Kim Kardashian-Prince stage dance story and bad Spider-Man Broadway reviews to make a mark. Another “Flash” item today about Adam Sandler snubbing print reporters at the red carpet premiere of Just Go with It is a real reach (it’s not unusual for A-listers to do only TV promo-ing), and like the other two tidbits, is anchored in New York.

Earlier this week, Johnson had a bit more luck when he looked at how estate lawyers are getting rich over bogus Michael Jackson lawsuits and shared the directorial aspirations of GEICO caveman commercial actor Ben Weber. Weber wants to make Heirloom, a personally relevant drama about Huntington’s disease

Weird Movie Title, Even Weirder PR Pitch

To do full justice to the name of the following indie film spoof, imagine reading the title aloud in the style of Pee-wee Herman‘s wind-up delivery. It’s called Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Hellbound, Flesh-Eating, Crawling, Alien & Zombified, Subhumanoid Living Dead… Part 5

Even stranger is the offer being made by the parody film’s hostess, former Long Island foster child Angelica, to a list of celebrities that includes Hollywood comedy royalty Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Seth MacFarlane, Trey Parker and Matt Stone. If one of these targets agrees to review the movie, she and her partners (director James Riffel, co-writer Mark Zobian) are promising to pass on a check for $10,000 that can be donated to a charity of the celebrity’s choice.

Hollywood Has a Billion Reasons to Love Dennis Dugan

There’s a great profile in Variety today of feature film comedy director Dennis Dugan, who recently joined a very exclusive Tinseltown club: the one featuring directors, producers, writers and actors whose works have grossed more than $1 billion at the box office.

Dugan has worked closely for many years with Adam Sandler. Their latest collaboration, Grown Ups, is what pushed the D-man over the B-mark. But as writer Steve Heisler points out, it all began for Dugan when he tried out as an actor for a late 1980′s TV classic.

Hollywood did indeed go to the dogs with a $51.8 million four-day performance for Warner Bros.’ “Marley and Me,” which also put WB over $1.74 billion, eclipsing Sony’s $1.6 billion 2006 revenue, FBLA’s box office guru Steve Mason reports.

Brad Pitt‘s starring film “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” followed at $39.1 million and Adam Sandler‘s comic turn for kiddies “Bedtime Stories” collected some $38.6 million to close out this post-Xmas stellar weekend.

Everyone complains about the Internet and its effect on the movie biz, but last weekend says movies are as big as ever. Maybe video will be the one that will suffer.

‘Marley and Me’ Wins X-mas; Beating Up On Pitt, Cruise And Sandler

“Marley and Me,” starring a very-much-alive Owen Wilson, proved that the movie business, to renew an awful pun, is truly going to the dogs, box office analyst Steve Mason confirmed to FBLA.

The film, which took in $14.5 million on Christmas day, beat out Paramount’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” Sony’s Tom Cruise affair “Valkyrie” and Disney’s Adam Sandler film, “Bedtime Stories,” to capture the Christmas crown.

The performance was a bit of an X-mas present for Fox, which grabbed the second-highest Christmas day performance, more than $5 million behind the Ben Stiller hit “Meet the Fockers.”

My guess is that “Marley and Me” needed to cast Barbra Streisand, or at least use a song of hers.
