World of Wonder Resurrects Celebrity Call-In Show Ring My Bell

Has it really been that long? More than two decades after Ring My Bell first launched in 1991 as a Channel 4 UK live broadcast, the World of Wonder series is being dialed up for a second Web revival. The first episode premieres on the company’s YouTube channel Thursday, March 21.

In case you’ve forgotten, the show – which got a previous Web makeover in 2006 – very simply connects a celebrity and inbound callers. Some of the earliest programs featured Al Sharpton and Boy George. From today’s announcement:

“We always felt Ring My Bell was so simple, it was ahead of its time”, said World of Wonder co-founder Fenton Bailey. “The best talk show is the one without a host!” added partner Randy Barbato.

Public Viewing for Etta James Friday in Inglewood

The family of the legendary R&B singer will allow the public to pay their last respects at a viewing on Friday. Etta James, a Los Angeles native, died last week from complications of leukemia. She was 73.

The viewing will be held at the Inglewood Cemetery Mortuary from 5 to 10 p.m. on January 27. The family has requested that donations in the singer’s memory be sent to the Rhythm and Blues Foundation.

A private funeral will be held on Saturday in Gardena, with Reverend Al Sharpton presiding.

The RNC, the Magic Negro and the LA Times

In March, David Ehrenstein penned a piece in the LA Times titled “Obama the ‘Magic Negro’”. The term ‘Magic Negro’ comes from film criticism about the stock character commonly played by say Morgan Freeman. Wikipedia explains the phrase as ‘a supporting, often mystical stock character in fiction who, by use of special insight or powers, helps the white protagonist get out of trouble.’

It’s like the hooker with a heart of gold or the nun with no heart at all. A movie cliche. Like when someone coughs – they’re dying. Or a woman throws up – she’s pregnant.

Anyway, Ehrenstein’s piece was not about Barack Obama, it was about the image of the Magic Negro and what the public has projected on to him.

Enter, right-wing ‘knowhard’ Rush Limbaugh and ‘satirist’ Paul Shanklin. Shanklin wrote a spoof to the tune of “Puff the Magic Dragon”. Titled,”Barack the Magic Negro.” With the lyrics sang by an Al Sharpton impersonator,”Barack the magic negro lives in DC. The LA Times they called him that because he’s not authentic like me. The guy from the LA paper said he made guilty whites feel good…” and “Don’t vote the Magic Negro in…”

So, who cares? No one. But then Chip Saltsman, former Mike Huckabee campaign staffer (snicker) wants to be RNC chair, so what better to send out to all his associates for Christmas than a copy of “Barack the Magic Negro”.

Michael Vick– Nobody’s Best Friend

Nike and the NFL have riled up local dog lovers by refusing to dump Atlanta Falcons Michael Vick, who has been indicted for running a dog fighting operation. Nike did suspend the Zoom Vick V shoe , but activists say “too little, too late” and are mass emailing contact info for NFL and the Falcons. (see below)
