Report: Jeopardy! Eyeing Matt Lauer

Even though he doesn’t actually look 72, Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek is getting up there in age, which means replacement talks are in full swing.

The New York Post reports Today co-host Matt Lauer is at the top of the short list when Trebek steps down, as expected, in 2016.

The timing works as well from a contract standpoint — Lauer’s deal is up at 2015 and Trebek recently signed a new three-year deal that will run out in 2016.

The other name the NY Post tossed out was CNN’s Anderson Cooper, who’s a reported free agent at the end of 2014. Any official decision on Trebek’s replacement isn’t expected for another 18 months.

Next year will mark 30 years as host of Jeopardy! for for Trebek. In recent years, he’s battled two minor heart attacks — the most recent one in 2012.

Rogue LAPD Cop Christopher Dorner Sent Package to Anderson Cooper

Rogue LAPD cop Christopher Dorner, who is currently wanted for the murder of no less than three people in Southern California, certainly had plenty of thoughts about various pop culture and media figures in his online manifesto. He apparently felt strong enough about Anderson Cooper, however, to send him a personal note.

Gawker Identifies the Creepiest Troll on the Internet, and Reddit Rushes to His Defense

Under the username Violentacrez, 49-year-old Michael Brutsch of Arlington, Texas, anonymously created and maintained a multitude of racist, mysogynistic, and violent sections on the website Reddit. “Niggerjailbait” is one such example of his handiwork on Reddit, and it is as bad as it sounds – sexualized images of underage African American girls. In fact, underage girls was a specialty of Brutsch, and while he was careful to remove any content that was technically illegal, his many “jailbait” pages clearly pandered to pedophiles.

Brutsch/Violentacrez was also the moderator behind the infamous Reddit group “Creepshots,” which featured upskirt and other covert photos taken of unsuspecting women in public places. Though he was somewhat famous in the Reddit community, and had even been called out by Anderson Cooper, Brutsch’s true identity was unknown until Friday, when Gawker’s Adrian Chen published an article about him.

Jethro Nededog on Joining Celebuzz

It’s been a month since Jethro Nededog switched to the professional channel of Celebuzz senior editor, TV. But one thing remains the same – he is reporting once more to good friend and mentor Joseph Kapsch.

The two previously worked together at the LA Times, Zap2it and, most recently, The Hollywood Reporter. Kapsch joined the fast-expanding BUZZMEDIA site in June as New York based executive editor, while Nededog has been working out of the company’s Hollywood offices since June 25.

“We care a lot about breaking news at Celebuzz, but we also care about the context of that news,” Nededog (pictured) told FishbowlLA Friday afternoon via telephone from Comic-Con. “For example, within my first week, I wrote a story about how Anderson Cooper‘s coming out will affect his TV career and viewers.”

Nededog, a native of San Diego and Comic-Con veteran, was at the show this year alongside Celebuzz movie writer Taryn Ryder. His numerous SDCC items included this text and video report about Australian actress Yvonne Strahovski joining the cast of Dexter.

Odd Future’s Frank Ocean Comes Out Via Tumblr

On the heels of Anderson Cooper‘s highly publicized statement that he is gay, Frank Ocean of the Los Angeles hip hop collective Odd Future has opened up about his homosexuality. In a passage on his personal Tumblr page, Ocean talks of falling in love for the first time with a man and the ensuing emotional turmoil. The post was originally intended for the liner notes of his new solo album, but Ocean felt the need to share it on Tumblr as a response to recent rumors about his sexuality.

The way Ocean chose to address his sexuality contrasts with the standard formula of coming out many celebrities employ. He didn’t go through journalists, press agents, or major media publications. Instead, he communicated directly with the public through social media. His original intention, to come out via his new album, represents an even more unorthodox and low-key approach, suggesting that Ocean may not have seen the revelation as worthy of a public statement, but rather a facet of his latest artistic endeavor.

Why Didn’t Anderson Cooper Come Out as Gay Sooner? Journalism.

The big news today is that Anderson Cooper has finally stepped out of the glass closet. While the newsman has never denied his homosexuality, until now he’d never publicly acknowledged it either.

His reasons for staying mum on the subject, despite being out to friends, family, and colleagues, went beyond a basic desire for privacy. Cooper felt that keeping a low profile helped him be a better journalist. As he explains to Andrew Sullivan of The Daily Beast:

Since I started as a reporter in war zones 20 years ago, I’ve often found myself in some very dangerous places. For my safety and the safety of those I work with, I try to blend in as much as possible, and prefer to stick to my job of telling other people’s stories, and not my own. I have found that sometimes the less an interview subject knows about me, the better I can safely and effectively do my job as a journalist.

In the space of just a few hours today, all media hell has broken loose. On what was supposed to be a lazy holiday-week Monday.

Via Daily Beast email-share exclusive, Andrew Sullivan has officially confirmed CNN newsman Anderson Cooper’s sexual orientation. In a tease for their August issue interview cover story by Todd S. Purdum, Vanity Fair dangles a hellacious quote from Alec Baldwin about TMZ’s Harvey Levin. And on the front page of the LA Times, Republican TV ad guru Fred Davis reveals to reporter Mark Barabak that Obama regrets, he’s had a few.

Add in the Cruise-Holmes mess and this is about the wackiest July media kickoff in recent memory. Without even counting New York-based Susan Candiotti’s weekend CNN bomshell about some apparent Penn State, e-mail cover-up orchestration.

Beverly Hills High Student Cracks Obama Press Corps

Max Schwartz still wants that one-on-one with Barack Obama. But for now, the Beverly Hills High School student is happy to settle for getting within about 30 feet of the commander-in-chief at LAX.

Per a fun write-up on Beverly Hills Patch, the ambitious senior was one of a dozen pool reporters accredited to cover the LA arrival of POTUS this past Wednesday. He tells Patch contributor Laurie Lande, who herself once reported for the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, how it all came about:

Schwartz called the White House press office at least monthly with interview requests and repeatedly phoned since early February when he learned the President was visiting Los Angeles… “I was added to the White House [press] email blast after several requests.”

LAT Profiles MSNBC Working-Man Champ Ed Schultz

Going up weekday nights against Anderson Cooper and Bill O′Reilly at 8 p.m. may sound like cable news suicide. But per an LA Times profile piece by Alana Semuels, MSNBC host Ed Schultz is making it work:

This year through early February, Schultz’s nightly The ED Show viewership has averaged 608,000, a 60% increase from his ratings during the same period in 2010, according to Nielsen. He’s surpassed Cooper, though he has more than a million fewer viewers than O’Reilly.

In response to critics who accuse Schultz of deceitfully switching from a Conservative to Liberal POV, he tells Semuels it’s genuine. He says a large spark for the transformation came from a most unusual first date with his now-wife and afternoon radio show producer, Wendy. She took him to a homeless shelter.

CNN Congrats Pour In for New KNBC Co-Anchor Stephanie Elam

The announcement that temporary KNBC weekend anchor Robert Kovacik has been given the job permanently, together with new partner Stephanie Elam (pictured), is great for a couple of different reasons.

First off, Kovacik’s delivery is as smooth as silk; in Hollywood terms, he’s the west coast local equivalent of William Hurt‘s Broadcast News character. Secondly, not only is Elam a woman of color, but she comes to the weekend anchor desk by way of CNN, where she was a much loved business news correspondent.

Anderson Cooper Mops the Floor with Nir Rosen

Journalist Nir Rosen, who tweeted a bunch of horrible things about Lara Logan‘s assault in Egypt, is claiming he didn’t know she was sexually assaulted. Rosen is currently in the Middle East working on a story about women being raped by US trained security forces. “It doesn’t look good,” says Rosen.
