The Oscars Are Now Jimmy Kimmel’s to Lose

Remember that brief March 1 New York Post “Page Six” item? Here’s a quick refresher:

Jimmy Kimmel is already being lined up to host next year’s Oscars, we’re told. One source said, “Jimmy is favored to host the Oscars next year; ABC has been pushing him for the role.” The late-night host already seems a shoo-in for the job after he earned his best post-awards show ratings on Sunday night.

We’ve been saying for several years that the logical host for the annual ABC-TV telecast is the one within walking-commute distance. Now that Seth MacFarlane has confirmed what pretty much everyone in Hollywood already knew, it’s hopefully only a matter of very little time before Kimmel finally gets his outside-the-special-box shot.

BuzzFeed Writer Remembers the Oscars She Attended Front-Row Center at Age 10

Chief LA correspondent Kate Aurthur shared a bittersweet bit of Oscar history this week at BuzzFeed. In 1980, after the death of her beloved father Robert Alan (aka “Bob”), she traveled to LA with mom to attend the Johnny Carson-hosted ceremony that included a nomination for dad’s original-screenplay work on the Bob Fosse film All That Jazz.

Aurthur isn’t sure why she waited this long to visit the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library on Vine and finally watch the 52nd Annual Academy Awards for the first belated time. But having now done so, she is struck by the ease of Carson as host, how much the show then was not about celebrity and some possible funny business related to dad’s final film project:

My mother swore that [Best Actress presenter and original All That Jazz star] Richard Dreyfuss did a little dance step to taunt Fosse as he walked out to the podium; I will confess I didn’t notice that when I re-watched it. But if you think annoying look-at-me theatrics at awards shows are a recent development — Anne Hathaway haters, take note — you should watch Dreyfuss.

David Wild Revisits the James Franco-Anne Hathaway Oscar Disaster

This week’s episode of Allison Hope Weiner’s Lip.tv interview program Media Mayhem is fantastically entertaining. The guest is David Wild, who got a job straight out of college with Esquire magazine, moved on from there to a staff position with Rolling Stone before winding up (with a little help from Steven Spielberg) as a go-to guy for the Emmys, Grammys and various other awards show/celebrity tributes.

One of Wild’s Oscar writing brushes was the year that James Franco and Anne Hathaway co-hosted. Weiner asks Wild for his thoughts on why it went so wrong:

“I cannot explain it other than I felt like it was the worst blind date in show business history. It was the homecoming queen or head of drama club trying hard in the sweetest possible to put on a show, and a guy who for whatever reason I don’t think wanted to host the show. In fact he went on Jimmy Kimmel and announced his intention to be the worst host in Oscar history. So on a certain level, the show was a tremendous success, because he achieved that goal.”

Coming Soon to Audible: Dustin Hoffman Reading Jerzy Kosinski

The A-List Collection is off to a great start at audible.com, with $14.95 offerings ready by Susan Sarandon, Samuel L. Jackson, Anne Hathaway and Kate Winslet. Intriguingly, Hathaway’s rendering of The Wizard of Oz has the reader-reviews edge so far, ahead of her fellow celebs by a half star.

As with all things Hollywood related, the coming attractions are as important a part of the package as the feature presentation. And in that respect, audible has got it going on.

Nine more tantalizing titles are currently teased. Everything from Colin Firth reading Graham Greene to Meg Ryan dropping into William Saroyan‘s The Human Comedy.

The Oscar Show That Could Have Been

With cynics predicting an Academy Awards snooze fest this year thanks to The Artist‘s inexorable march towards Best Picture, Best Actor and more, hints of a different kind of entertainment have been dropped in the New York Times.

According to reporter Michael Cieply‘s sources, more change was afoot last year following the disastrous James Franco-Anne Hathaway program. And that perhaps, if the production process had not been thrown into a tizzy by the departure of Brett Ratner and Eddie Murphy, there might have been a more radical flavor embraced than the one currently being rehearsed behind closed doors:

One line of thinking, according to people who were briefed on the discussions but insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for the Academy, proposed throwing the Oscar process wide open to a public that has been trained by American Idol, TMZ and an endless feed of Internet moments to expect some grit with their glamor. Among the suggestions: nominees using smartphones to photograph themselves in the run-up to the show.

Madison Avenue vs. Oscar’s Median Age

As might be expected, the Ratner-Murphy-Grazer-Crystal game of Oscar musical chairs is echoing across Madison Avenue. According to Claire Atkinson of the New York Post, brand new AMPAS marketing chief Christina Kounelias (pictured) and her colleagues are scrambling to adjust an ad sales pitch that until recent events at the Arclight and on Howard Stern airwaves, was predicated entirely on Axel Foley.

One of the problems the Oscar marketing gang faces is that the selection of a 63-year-old, traditional format replacement host leaves them challenged to explain how they will fix what happened last year. Despite the presence of a tweeting James Franco and giggling Anne Hathaway, the 2010 Oscars broadcast was a disaster:

Horizon Media researcher Brad Adgate noted that the Oscars broadcast actually aged upwards last year with the median age hitting 50.6 years — the oldest it’s ever been.

Twilight Drivel Forces Actor Jim Sturgess Onto Twitter

Former LA Times staffer Lorenza Muñoz has a fun interview on The Daily Beast with 29-year-old British actor Jim Sturgess, whose romantic drama One Day with Anne Hathaway opens today.

Sturgess tells Muñoz that he never really had an interest in joining the Twitter ranks. However, he’s there now as @mrjimsturgess (that’s his profile pic, left), and it’s all thanks to an annoying impersonator:

Sturgess was forced to start tweeting only because a fan had created his own Twitter account posing as the actor. While initially the impostor seemed benign, Sturgess drew the line when the pretender began tweeting about the Twilight series and the romantic escapades of Bella and Edward.

Anne Hathaway Premieres Anti-Paparazzi Rap on Conan

Quintessential white girl Anne Hathaway can rap. No, really.

She channeled all her frustration at the lowest form of celebrity journalism into a Lil’ Wayne style rap, which she performed last night on Conan.

Readers Mock EW Op Ed

The intention of Darren Franich‘s August 9 Op Ed on EW.com was noble. Using the side-by-side summer 2011 comparison of Fast Five and Transformers: Dark Side of Moon, he wondered whether Hollywood was killing its own movies with excessive amounts of advance hype and carefully calculated Internet leaks.

The only problem is that Franich writes for a website and magazine that rely heavily on this very same hype machine for covers, what’s hot, what’s not, and more. As a result, when he put the question to “Pop Watch” readers, the answers were overwhelmingly negative. Beginning with the very first of more than 100 comments at press time:

joe lucky: Well, it’s a good thing EW doesn’t contribute to the fanboy hype with exclusive first pics or anything.

continued…

LA Comedy Writer Leverages Twitter ‘Fast-Forward Career Button’

There are essentially two kinds of “overnight Twitter success:” the carefully planned, deliberate variety and the purely accidental. In an interview piece today in the Boston Globe, 23-year-old LA transplant Megan Amram (pictured), at 52,000-plus followers and counting, confirms that she belongs to the latter group:

Amram considers herself only semi-computer literate and opened her Twitter account just a year ago, when she dreamed of launching a career writing Broadway musicals. That remains a goal, but for now it’s the new media world, not the old, that’s driving her career and catching the eye of show business insiders.

You may not have heard of Amram, but the Harvard grad is on the LA fast track, working as a staff writer for Disney Channel sitcom A.N.T. Farm and providing material for the 2010 Academy Awards. At Harvard, she wrote a couple of Hasty Pudding playlets, Commie Dearest and Acropolis Now, with collaborator Alexandra Petri, now an opinion writer with the Washington Post.

James Franco Kisses Off Twitter, Oscar Show Drug Rumors

Leave it to actor James Franco to pick April Fool’s Day as the perfect date for some Academy Awards related spring cleaning.

Per the Hollywood Reporter‘s Mark Cina, he is off Twitter, just a couple of months after creating an account to lead up to the 83rd Oscars telecast. And tonight on Letterman, he deflects all those viewer comments that he must have been high on the 27th of February, suggesting that even the Tasmanian Devil would look “stoned” next to the energizer bunny aura of co-host Anne Hathaway:

For Your Consideration: Younger, Better-Looking Oscar Hosts

The analysis has begun with a vengeance as to a) why the Academy has chosen this morning as its latest Oscars telecast hosts the handsome young duo of James Franco (32) and Anne Hathaway (28), and b) whether or not this will help make the moribund program relevant again to younger audiences.

Here at FishbowlLA, we have our own take on this bold choice away from the usual stand-up comic, late night talk show host and Social Security nipping candidates. In no particular order:

- Given that the Oscar telecast usually feels like it lasts about 127 hours, and that watching it sometimes induces the feeling that you would rather gnaw off an arm than sit through till the end, Franco is imminently well qualified.

- Since many attending divas wear Prada, parking Hathaway on the red carpet beforehand for a couple of quick Q&A’s would seem like a perfect, synergistic way to get younger eyeballs to tune in. Especially if Meryl Streep happens to walk by.

continued…
