Ben Mankiewicz of The Young Turks and AMC fame is now just a cog in a series of Bill Hader characters. Wow – Mankiewicz was parodied on SNL! We asked Ben what it feels like to be the Christine O’Donnell of TYT. “Seeing yourself spoofed on SNL is surreal,” the host tells FBLA. “Everybody thinks it’s great…but my mother. She asked, ‘Being parodied on TV does that make you a joke?’”

Relax Mrs. Mankiewicz, your son is still serious basic cable and Internet show host. But he does now have pretty stellar pick up line. Our suggestion: “Don’t be a hater ’cause I was played by Bill Hader!” Ahem.

The Young Turks Do Their First Spin-Off, A Movie Review Show

As we’ve written about in the past, if anyone is in the position to do to television what blogs did to newspapers, it’s our local yokels The Young Turks. Their Internet based show is averaging half a million views a day on YouTube and today they announced show number two on their “network.”

February 17, 2010 (Los Angeles) Announced today, Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Classic Movies), Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes) and Cenk Uygur (“The Young Turks”) will host the new Internet program “What the Flick?!”, a live online video talk show filled with clips, reviews, honest discussions – and arguments – of the week’s must-see films. “What the Flick?!” makes its official premiere on Friday, February 19th at 2pm PT/ 5pm ET through the “TYT” Internet hub.

It’s All About the Benjamins

Ben Mankiewicz and Ben Lyons are apt to do a serviceable job taking over “At the Movies,” but perhaps the most alarming element (for any moviegoer worth their weight) is that neither has been a film critic before (well actually, Ben 2 was called a critic on E!, that repository of journalistic and critical integrity).

But the two of them are related to film critics or film screenwriters. Granted they’re pretty good screenwriters (Citizen Kane) and critics (Jeffrey Lyons of WNBC in New York). But is it like baseball where Bobby Bonds can produce a Barry Bonds? I’m not sure either of these guys can hit 762 home runs, steroids or not.

So we’ll all just have to rely on Harry Knowles to figure out the movie business.

Variety: Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz Take Over for Epert and Roeper

Variety has a story that blows our little minds (and not just because Ben Lyons lives around the block from us:

During negotiations to extend Richard Roeper‘s contract for At the Movies, Disney ABC Domestic Television abruptly ended the talks. Thus Roeper, followed by the show’s co-founder, Roger Ebert, left the show. On Tuesday, Disney ABC will announce announced that E! Entertainment critic Ben Lyons and Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz are take over hosting duties on a revamped At the Movies aimed at a younger demo.

Variety’s Anne Thompson says she’s never seen these fellas in action, but we have: Here’s a tip, Anne: Get ready for some punky wigga’s view of the movies.
