Chuck Philips on Life After the LA Times

Pulitzer Prize winner Chuck Philips recently launched a personal blog called the Chuck Philips Post. Today, he shares the English-language translation of an interview he did last week with Spanish website SwaggaMusic.net.

One particular passage that caught FishbowlLA’s attention is Philips’ answer to the question – ‘In what aspects did your life change after leaving the LA Times:’

“Nobody would return my calls or emails. Nobody would give me the time of day. I lost my job, my hope, my faith. My mutherf*cking mind. Then, after about a year of unemployment, I said f*ck it, and decided to spend my savings on completing Big’s murder investigation. I solved it in 2009. Late in 2010, the money ran out.”

LAPD Cop Turned Author Re-Ignites Tupac Shakur Murder Investigation

The release this week of Murder Rap, a cleverly titled book by former LAPD detective Greg Kading, has stoked a whole new round of explosive media coverage about the unsolved killings of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. Beginning with the LA Weekly, which blasted out a sensational headline tying Sean Combs and Suge Knight to, respectively, the killings of Shakur and Smalls.

Kading, after giving the Weekly an exclusive first look and interview, has talked with website HipHopDX.com. Although Knight has yet to be heard from, Combs told local reporters Chris Vogel and Simone Wilson via email that the Kading allegations are “pure fiction and completely ridiculous.” Per the pair’s article:

Perhaps luckily for the rappers’ families and fans still seeking closure, Kading made copies of nearly every investigative report and taped confession before he left LAPD. His explosive book details the behind-the-scenes failure by LAPD to bring Shakur’s and Smalls’ killers to justice.

In a taped confession fully reviewed by LA Weekly, Keffe D says, “[Combs] took me downstairs and he’s like, ‘Man, I want to get rid of them dudes.’ … I was like, ‘We’ll wipe their ass out, quick. It’s nothing.’ … We wanted a million.”

Tupac Lives!!!? No, PBS Was Just Hacked

Apparently upset with a recent Frontline documentary on WikiLeaks, the hacker group LulzSec hacked into PBS’ website and posted a fake story that Tupac was alive and well and living alongside Biggie Smalls in a small, unnamed New Zealand town. Despite the ridiculousness of the story and several grammatical errors, the post went viral before PBS could take it down.

Frontline issued a statement in response to the hack, in which Executive Producer David Fanning called the attack “irresponsible and chilling.

Cops Pursuing New Leads in Biggie Smalls Murder Case

The 1997 Los Angeles murder of rapper Biggie Smalls, a.k.a. Notorious B.I.G.-Christopher Wallace, remains one of the city’s most egregious unsolved celebrity murders. But according to a new report by CNN, LAPD are back on the case.

Unspecified information provided to police last year has “reinvigorated” the investigation. The CNN article does a great job of actively touching all the bases, from then-police chief Bernard Parks (notions of an LAPD cover-up are “absurd”) to an attorney for the Wallace family (their lawsuit against the city was put on hold last April so as to not interfere with the renewed investigation).

Police: Ronni Chasen Gunned Down by Shooter in Another Car

As new details emerged last night via the Hollywood Reporter about the Beverly Hills Police investigation into the shocking murder of publicist Ronni Chasen, it still seems ludicrous that a beloved 64-year-old PR industry veteran would be deliberately targeted by a mob-style hit. Could it be, perhaps, a tragic case of mistaken identity, with the shooter basing their actions on the make and model of car Chasen was driving? Or a very foolhardy carjacking attempt, gone horribly wrong?

According to a police working theory shared via THR, Chasen was shot by someone in another car that pulled up to the passenger side of her vehicle, either as she was turning left onto Whittier Drive going west on Sunset, or just after she had turned south onto that street. There is also, as everyone expected, archived security camera footage from one or more of the city’s fortified celebrity residences.

Notorious L.I.E? Rapper/prison inmate Waymond Anderson recants his earlier testimony that implicated a former LAPD officer in the shooting death of Biggie Smalls. In a new deposition, Anderson said he lied as part of a “scam” concocted by two other convicts as well as Smalls’ family and their attorney, Perry R. Sanders Jr. In another weird twist, Sanders says Anderson is lying about the scam to “please” LAT reporter, Chuck Philips.
