Is Focus Features Giving Schenectady the Shaft?

There’s a really ugly Hollywood PR storm brewing in Schenectady, New York. One that Focus Features would do well to quell asap.

Per an article by Paul Grondahl in Albany’s Times-Union newspaper, city officials, locals and at least one area native prominently associated with The Place Beyond the Pines are all mystified by the apparent lack of any plans for a promised spring premiere at Proctors. The Ryan Gosling-Bradley Cooper drama was filmed all over Schenectady in the summer of 2011; the building on the poster crop at right for example is a Trustco bank branch at the corner of State Street and Brandywine Avenue. From Grondahl’s report:

“I’m annoyed with these guys,” said Philip Morris, CEO of Proctors. He said the producers and distributor are not returning his calls, even though his staff assisted the production…

Zach Galifianakis Taps Another Deadpan Silver Lining

In the first episode of Zach Galifianakis‘ “Oscar Buzz” edition of Between Two Ferns, it was Jennifer Lawrence who stole the show. She zinged the host with a great Hunger Games gag and to his “that’s off-putting” retort, suggested that he in fact is the one who should be “off pudding.”

Now it’s the turn of her Silver Linings Playbook co-star Bradley Cooper. He’s the final guest for Galifianakis’ second set of 2012 Oscar nominee sit-downs, foolishly agreeing to read an acceptance speech drafted by the talk show host.

Which is the Bigger Oscar Snub: Ben Affleck or Kathryn Bigelow?

Seth MacFarlane‘s Hitler joke during this morning’s announcement of the 2012 Oscar nominations rippled awkwardly through the AMPAS room. (And brought back memories for FishbowlLA of Ricky Gervais‘ aborted plans to come out for one Golden Globes telecast dressed as the Führer, waving at the crowd “Heil!” style.)

But that was nothing compared to what happened when the nominees for Best Director were announced. The tweets quickly started flying as west coast entertainment journalists rustled up at the break of dawn reeled in the face of the omission of Ben Affleck (Argo) and Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty). Tom Hooper was also passed over in the category for Les Miserables, but that was something a number of pundits had actually been expecting.

The first wave of shocked analysis is floating all kinds of theories as to why Bigelow and Affleck were snubbed. Did accusations of Zero Dark Thirty being “pro-torture” hurt Bigelow? Was all that fawning over Affleck this awards season too much for jealous Academy members to bear?

Harvey Weinstein Fashions Faux Mitt Romney Trailer

This afternoon, Harvey Weinstein has shared on The Huffington Post the kind of entry that brings back memories of the website’s earliest beginnings. Before the AOL acquisition, before the New York conference room SEO nanosecond expertise, before the third-party content mirroring, it was just Arianna Huffington’s celebrity friends posting their random observations.

Folks like Weinstein, who follows up last night’s lively appearance on Piers Morgan Tonight with a faux trailer for the Mitt Romney drama Hindsight. This Democratic ditty was put together with the help of John Stockwell, Meghan O’Hara and Weinstein’s Silver Linings Playbook star Bradley Cooper.

For good measure, there’s also some soundtrack assistance from Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. Enjoy or – as several already have in the HuffPo comments – dismiss.

Ryan Gosling is TIME‘s ‘Coolest Person of the Year’

In the shadow of TIME magazine’s anointment of the generic protester as 2011′s “Person of the Year,”columnist Joel Stein has engineered his very own personal side-honor category.

After careful consideration, Stein decided that the combined impact of four very different movies and bravura personal behavior outweighed such troublesome downsides as Canadian origins, a Mouseketeer connection and some homeschooling. As a result, Ryan Gosling is his choice for “Coolest Person of the Year:”

We have no idea how Gosling will deal with this honor. A tattoo seems like the obvious way to go, though a commemorative diorama would probably be good enough for a spot on Access Hollywood. But that’s not why we pick a Coolest Person of the Year. We do it for the journalism.

The Hangover III Might Be Set in Los Angeles

Are you ready for The Hangover III?

Actor Bradley Cooper told the BBC’s Graham Norton Show that their could be a third film on the way — which would take place in Los Angeles.

“I think that we adhered to the formula in the second one, for those who’ve seen it, and the third one, I think, which would close the whole trilogy,” said Cooper. “I think it’ll take place in Los Angeles and maybe not adhere to the structure. It might be different.”
