KCET, Current TV Among 2013 Alfred I. duPont Award Winners

SoCal Connected correspondent Jennifer London, producer Karen Foshay and editor Michael Bloecher have brought home a second Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University award for KCET’s nightly news magazine. Their March 16 report “Courting Disaster” highlighted the problems plaguing Los Angeles County’s Children’s Dependency Court, a branch of LA Superior Court that encompasses more than 25,000 children.

Congrats to the rest of the “Courting Disaster” team: executive producers Bret Marcus and Justine Schmidt; videographers Dan Caston, Kenny Gioseffi and Brett Wood. “We are extremely honored to receive a second duPont-Columbia award,” said Marcus. “This type of special long-form reporting is what SoCal Connected is all about.”

FishbowlLA Set Visit: SoCal Connected

The views from the fifth and sixth floors of KCET’s glass-encased offices at The Pointe in Burbank are spectacular, offering panoramic vistas of next-door neighbors NBC LA, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Forest Lawn in the southern distance and more. Another big difference from the station’s previous red-brick HQ on Sunset Boulevard is that employees are now ensconced in an open-cubicle set-up as sleek as that of a Madison Avenue ad agency.

But these are not the only reasons for the renewed sense of excitement at KCET. Thanks to the expansion of SoCal Connected to four nights a week, the addition of Madeleine Brand to the show’s talent ranks, a recent merger with San Francisco’s Link Media and the resulting imminent arrival of new chief strategy officer Paul Mason, this viewer-supported TV station is very clearly and boldly trying to re-invent the jettisoned PBS model.

SoCal Connected shoots two shows on Monday and another two on Wednesday, with a repeat broadcast Fridays. As FishbowlLA sat at the back of the control room yesterday watching the production of tonight’s November 29 broadcast, we were reminded of that scene in Broadcast News where William Hurt’s character shows nervous newbie Albert Brooks how to properly sit on a sports jacket. TV news is all about the smallest of details.

KCET’s SoCal Connected Wins duPont Award

What a way to end the year. After scoring a George Foster Peabody Award in June, KCET’s weekly newsmagazine SoCal Connected has landed the equally prestigious broadcast journalism honor of an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award.

Among the program’s cited reports were a trio about LA’s marijuana mess. “Up in Smoke” looked at legal loopholes being exploited by dispensaries; “Cannabis Cowboys” followed federal agents sniffing out Mexican drug cartel weed patches in California parklands; and “The Doctor is In” proved just how easy it was for LA Times columnist Steve Lopez to get a medical marijuana prescription filled.

SoCal Connected Sweeps the LA Press Club Awards

We’re starting to feel sorry for these poor people at SoCal Connected. They have got to be getting tired of all these accolades. The boring ceremonies, the rubber chicken – having to write all those press releases. It looks exhausting.

And may we use this opportunity to shame the other local news television programs. How does a weekly public television program keep winning awards for breaking news? This should be embarrassing. Humiliating. Stop sucking.

Anyway, congratulations to SoCal Con! We cornered the producer Bret Marcus at the LA Press Club Awards and asked when the show was going to be daily. He told us they only need a couple million dollars to make that happen. We’re looking forward to that bake sale.

Los Angeles – June 28, 2010 – KCET’s hard-hitting weekly news program, SoCal Connected, won a total of 13 Los Angeles Press Clubs awards, including first-place wins in all major television categories at the 52nd Annual Southern California Journalism
Awards. The Los Angeles Press Club Awards honor high-caliber journalism in traditional and emerging media formats, with winners being selected by press clubs from across the country. The Emmy and Peabody-winning SoCal Connected won first place in all of
the categories in which it was nominated, winning in six of the competition’s seven television categories. In several categories, SoCal Connected also placed second or received Honorable Mention in addition to the first-place win.

Weed Stories Win SoCal Connected a Peabody

SoCal Connected wins every award its eligible for. It’ll either get canceled and be the “Arrested Development” of local PBS news programs or do a nightly show and actually build a real audience. We hope for the latter and expect the former.

LOS ANGELES – March 31, 2010 – Two KCET programs have won the prestigious Peabody Award, for the best in electronic media, it was announced today by the University of Georgia. KCET’s six-time EmmyÂ® Award-winning weekly news program SoCal Connected
received the Peabody for “Up in Smoke,” an investigation into the proliferation of medical marijuana facilities in the Los Angeles region, and “Cannabis Cowboys,” an insider’s view of a 36-hour sting operation to destroy marijuana crops run by drug cartels inside California national parks.

Los Angeles – January 23, 2010 – SoCal Connected, KCET’s hard-hitting weekly news program, won six Golden Mike Awards for Best News Public Affairs Program, Best News Special, Best Hard News Reporting, Best Light News Reporting, Best Individual Writing, and Best Original News Commentary.

The awards were announced on Saturday by The Radio & Television News Association of Southern California, which presents the Golden Mike Awards for excellence in broadcast journalism every year.

“SoCal Connected is honored to receive six Golden Mike Awards,” said Bret Marcus, executive producer of SoCal Connected and KCET senior vice president of programming and production. “SoCal Connected is committed to bringing viewers stories that can make a difference in their lives, and we’re proud to be recognized for our efforts.”

SoCal Connected Buys FBLA Brunch

We were going to list the shows that have yet to feed us a meal just prior to lunch. But it would be much easier just to mention the only one who has – SoCal Connected.

They invited us, Kevin Roderick (who we missed saying hi to) and cast and crew to a screening to celebrate the beginning of their second season.

Only one season? These people have won awards for two years in a row – how does that happen?!

Speaking of which, we talked to producer Angela Shelley about the SoCal Connected coverage of the Station Fire. “We won a Golden Mike for that,” noted Shelley. “Breaking news? We’re a weekly program.” Yep, it does not speak well for our local news teams. You know…since it was the biggest fire in the history of the city and no one seemed to be able to get their pancake on fast enough to report what was going on.

Anyway, the shindig was held at the KCET studios, the oldest continually used studio in town. Most notably where Sex Kittens Go To College with Mamie Van Doren was filmed. Made back when movies actually meant things.

The second season debuts this Thursday.

KCET’s SoCal Connected Gets 11 LA Area Emmy Nominations

Congrats to KCET!

Los Angeles – July 9, 2009 – KCET, public television for Southern and Central California, earned a total of 11 nominations for the 61st Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards. The station’s award-winning weekly news program, SoCal Connected, received 10
nominations. An additional nomination went to KCET’s 49th Annual Los Angeles County Holiday Celebration.

The winners will be announced at the 61st Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards presentation on Saturday evening, August 29, 2009 at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood.

KCET’s nominations included the categories of Information/Public Affairs Series (more than 50% remote) for SoCal Connected and Education Special for SoCal Connected’s special report about one of the country’s most notorious schools, “Inside Locke High.”
SoCal Connected also received nominations in the categories of Feature Segment, Information Segment, where it swept the entire category, and three non-news categories.

“KCET is extremely proud of all our nominees,” said Bret Marcus, executive producer of SoCal Connected and KCET senior vice president of programming and production. “It is especially gratifying to receive 10 nominations in our first season of SoCal
Connected.”

KCET Wins Two Golden Mike Awards

We are very excited to announce that our little local TV program, SoCal Connected has won two Golden Mike Awards. We like any news that has nothing to do with people losing their homes, jobs, minds (Rob Blagojevich that’s aimed at you and your aluminum hat).

Anyway, SoCal Connected Executive Producer Bret Marcus used to work on “The News with Brian Williams” on MSNBC for all you stalkers out there.

KCET’s SoCal Connected, which launched
on-air and online in September 2008, this weekend won two Golden Mike Awards for Best News Public Affairs Program and for Best Original News Commentary.
