In the media this week, there’s something going on in reaction to the release of Lawrence Wright‘s book about Scientology that also occurred last year when Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorced, and separately when a Vanity Fair cover story outlined that whole business with Nazanin Boniadi.

For those of us who watch Scientology closely, and have for many years, most of the [Lawrence Wright book-related] articles that have popped up in recent days seem to be gasping over things that have been known or written about for many years…

We would argue that for much of the public, the word [about Scientology] was already out long before today’s publication of Wright’s book. (Look at the reaction, for example, when on Monday The Atlantic magazine ran a paid church advertorial at its website extolling the virtues of Scientology leader David Miscavige. Even though there was nothing really wrong with The Atlantic taking the church’s money for an ad, the public denunciation of the magazine was so swift and loud, The Atlantic caved and took it down.)

Sherman Oaks TV Series Creator Minting Brave New Distribution Model

There are number of remarkable things to note about Jon Hotchkiss’ science-experiment TV series This vs. That: he turned down deals with a couple of U.S. networks in favor of funding the program himself; he edits on a pair of Avids in his Sherman Oaks garage; and his triumvirate of male hosts connects to everything from Improv comedy to the old FOX game show Studs.

But most remarkable of all is the fact that Hotchkiss has already sold his first batch of six one-hour episodes to TV channels in a dozen countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Japan, Israel among them). With the program now set to make its unconventional U.S. debut.

“I’m likely going to go with Vimeo in January,” Hotchkiss tells FishbowlLA via telephone of his American roll out plans. “They have a new platform that allows content creators to set their own price. And they are taking 50% less money than iTunes.”

“I’m still figuring out pricing, but what I’m thinking is something like giving the first part of each episode for nothing and then, if viewers want to see the rest, they can pay a dollar or two. For people like me to get original content out that is at the same level of what would be on a TV network, consumers have to pay something. But the good news is that it doesn’t need to be a lot.”

Rolling Stone journalist and FBLA favorite Matt Taibbi isn’t one to hold back on his media criticism. He once threw a pie filled with horse sperm into the face of a New York Times journalist whose work he didn’t like. He’s calmed down a bit since then, but he’s definitely not happy with MSNBC’s suspension of Keith Olbermann.

We had a whole generation of journalists who sat by and did nothing while, for instance, George Bush led us into an idiotic war on a lie, plus thousands more who spent day after day collecting checks by covering Britney’s hair and Tiger’s text messages and other stupidities while the economy blew up and two bloody wars went on mostly unexamined… and it’s Keith Olbermann who should “pay the price” for being unethical? Because, and let me get this straight, he donated money, privately, to politicians?

KCET Wins Two Golden Mike Awards

We are very excited to announce that our little local TV program, SoCal Connected has won two Golden Mike Awards. We like any news that has nothing to do with people losing their homes, jobs, minds (Rob Blagojevich that’s aimed at you and your aluminum hat).

Anyway, SoCal Connected Executive Producer Bret Marcus used to work on “The News with Brian Williams” on MSNBC for all you stalkers out there.

KCET’s SoCal Connected, which launched
on-air and online in September 2008, this weekend won two Golden Mike Awards for Best News Public Affairs Program and for Best Original News Commentary.

Sarah Palin to Take Actual Questions From MSM

We have to admit that we kind of no longer care that she says dumb, usually contradictory stuff and then smiles and winks. We’ll watch it anyway, because we have to see how the season ends. It’s how we got sucked into watching the entire season of Rock of Love.

CNN investigative correspondent Drew Griffin will sit down for a wide-ranging interview with Republican vice-presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin in Reno, Nev., today. The 15-minute, one-on-one interview will air in all three hours of The Situation Room and will cover a variety of topics.

Earlier this year, Griffin reported the documentary CNN Presents: Sarah Palin Revealed, which included interviews with Palinâ€™s father and sister.

A transcript of the interview will be available at www.CNNPressroom.com. The Situation Room airs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. (ET).

A documentary earlier this year? You mean like September? We think this long political season is wearing on that copy writer at CNN.com.
