What’s more embarrassing? The Daily Mail cranking out a crazy September 2 item about Bruce Willis’ Rumer-ed plans to sue Apple for the right to bequeath his iTunes collection, or legitimate press picking up the item on a slow Labor Day news weekend?

FishbowlLA is going to vote for the latter. Among those duped and now apologizing, sort of, is techcrunch.com:

Update: Like many of our peers, we also fell for this good old British tabloid rumor at first. We have updated the story now that Willis’ wife has denied that this story was true.

The Biggest Stars of LAFF: John Horn, Nicole Sperling and Kenneth Turan

Never mind the Narrative Competition; never mind the docs. The most widely seen and strangely hypnotic offering at the 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival is a nifty white-background promo from the event’s major media sponsor.

Playing before each featured attraction, the Calendar section shout-out showcases the brief close-up musings of entertainment reporters John Horn and Nicole Sperling, followed by those of esteemed film critic Kenneth Turan. The promo was shot in-house at the LA Times, and honestly, director Tim French deserves high marks for making it hold up under the burden of maximum repeat viewing.

The script was concocted by LAT VP of consumer marketing Donna Tarzian and her team consisting of Jim Fisher, Brandon Botta and Sally Lok. In terms of Hollywood leitmotif, Horn up on the big screen looks a little like Bruce Willis while Sperling actually bears a striking resemblance to Elisabeth Shue.

Patrick Schwarzenegger: Politics? No. Dating Miley Cyrus? Maybe…

The May issue of Details magazine contains a well-timed profile of Patrick Schwarzenegger, the 17-year-old son of Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Despite the Kennedy blood, Patrick made it clear to interviewer Laurence Lowe he wasn’t interested in going the Governator route: “No, politics isn’t on the list.”

Hollywood, however, is a different story. Patrick has already started his own clothing company, and just recently landed a modeling agent. And then there are the starlets:

“I just saw Tallulah over winter break,” he says, referring to the daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore. “I was at their house in Sun Valley.” Although he just reunited with an ex, Patrick cockily refers to his tweet-mates Kendall Jenner and Selena Gomez as “girls for the future.”

“My eye, though,” he adds, “is set on Miley.”

Bruce Willis Squeaks Onto IMDB’s Top 25

Posted today, the names and titles populating IMDB’s user-generated lists of 2010′s Top 25 Movies and Movie Stars are all fairly predictable. But Bruce Willis?!

Somehow, the 55-year-old chrome-domed David Letterman sidekick managed to score the #19 spot on the website’s 2010 StarMeter rankings. This despite the fact that Kevin Smith, the director of the actor’s opening salvo for the year, Cop Out, got into a pissing match with critics via Twitter.

Hollywood Has a Billion Reasons to Love Dennis Dugan

There’s a great profile in Variety today of feature film comedy director Dennis Dugan, who recently joined a very exclusive Tinseltown club: the one featuring directors, producers, writers and actors whose works have grossed more than $1 billion at the box office.

Dugan has worked closely for many years with Adam Sandler. Their latest collaboration, Grown Ups, is what pushed the D-man over the B-mark. But as writer Steve Heisler points out, it all began for Dugan when he tried out as an actor for a late 1980′s TV classic.

Mos Def Now Wanted In Vegas — And It’s Not For Gambling

One of FBLA’s favorite actors stands accused in Las Vegas of attacking a paparazzi last August, according to blackvoices.com.

Mos Def, who gave stellar turns in films like “The Italian Job” with Mark Wahlberg, “Something the Lord Made” opposite Alan Rickman and “16 Blocks” with Bruce Willis, went ballistic on a fashion photogapher at Vegas’s annual Men’s Apparel and Garment Industry Convention. It was unclear what provoked him.

Allegedly, Mos snatched photographer Volker Corell’s camera from around his neck before smashing it to the ground and taking off with the busted equipment. And apparently the photographer was left with a cut on his left hand following the incident.

A warrant was issued Mos Def’s arrest in Las Vegas.

He faces faces charges of felony robbery and malicious destruction of private property.

‘What Just Happened’ Just Happened

An improbable studio film from director Barry Levinson is leaving audiences perplexed in its limited release.

The film, based on producer Art Linson’s tell-all book about the ins and outs of producing, is really more of a producer’s mea culpa. (Click here to see a trailer for the film.)

That Linson was able to convince a studio (much less 2929 Prods. chieftain Mark Cuban) to take on his semi-biographical tome is testament to his power as a producer. That he was able to script the version that Levinson actually shot is perhaps a greater accomplishment.

Hollywood is not ripe material for the film business, going back Preston Sturges’s classic “Sullivan’s Travels” all the way through to Levinson’s earlier film, “Wag the Dog” (ironically starring Robert De Niro as well) and even Robert Altman’s “The Player.”

It might have something to do with the age-old industry adage: Don’t ask how the sausage is made, just eat it.

Linson is not much of a screenwriter, but he does get off some good riffs. Bruce Willis, as a coddled star, screams at De Niro that he doesn’t have any films, he’s a producer:

“That’s like the mayonaisse on a bad sandwich.”

Maybe we should leave it at that.

Trade Round-Up: August 28

In the wake of Owen Wilson‘s hospitalization and recovery, Variety does its best to diagnose his slate of upcoming films. New Variety staffer Tatiana Siegel writes that first up, the actor was due to begin shooting a role in “Tropic Thunder” opposite Ben Stiller followed by the January start of “Marley & Me” opposite Jennifer Aniston. He’s also scheduled for promotional activities to support Wes Anderson‘s “The Dareeling Limited,” set for release Sept. 28 from Fox Searchlight.

Variety‘s Michael Fleming writes that Oliver Stone has set his sights on yet another Vietnam project by closing a deal with United Artists to finance “Pinkville.” Pic is a drama about the investigation of the 1968 My Lai massacre. He’ll direct and Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum will star. Stone’s “Born on the Fourth of July” star Tom Cruise now runs UA with partner Paula Wagner.

Jennifer Lopez is also hustling with a new project for the small-screen, teaming up with Jane Startz Prods. to develop “The Amigas Sweet 15 Club,” a half-hour comedy about five Miami teens who run their own Quinceanera party-planning biz.

Innovative Artists has been ripe with a lot of work-related gossip this year from assistant drama to a brand new lawsuit. THR reports that Innovative agents Michael McConnell and Ben Press filed suit Monday in LA demanding that they be allowed to leave the tenpercentery along with their clients due to unfair one-sided employment contracts.

Scott Baio‘s reality run on VH1 with his self-titled TV show has been extended but the new season won’t just find him “45â€¦and Single” but instead a year older and expecting his first child. THR says the new plotline will focus on impending fatherhood following a season finale engagement with girlfriend Renee.

We don’t normally offer double-features in this here space, but the Orange County Register has worked hard to market columnists Peter Larsen (aka Pedro) and Michael Hewitt (The Watcher) as a single, uber-hip brand, so we’re going to aid and abet and hit them with our patented stupid questions:

1. What newspapers do you read? Michael Hewitt: The Register and the Times, of course. And the Grunion Gazette, the local weekly.
Peter Larsen: The Orange County Register with breakfast, the LA Times from the recycling bin at work and the NY Times and Washington Post online when I think to look

Anne Thompson writes that celebs are increasingly lurking on message boards and ego-key-stroking themselves at all hours.

According to Ain’t It Cool News, in fact, Bruce Willis recently called a blog editor at 4 a.m. to set up a Q&A with fanboys on the site — after defending the Die Hard franchise as a “commenter” named Water B.

Zach Braff directly instructs his fans on the finer points of MySpace messaging a celebrity:

“Please don’t send me anything HTML; especially in the comments section. Don’t get me wrong, I love an animated unicorn waving ‘Thanks For the Add’ as much as the next guy, but I disabled those things because they make your page all wonky. And no one likes a wonky page.”

New York Magazine had a whole piece devoted to Lily Allen that focused in part on the havoc she has wreaked online.
