Have SoCal bear sightings risen to the media-frenzy level of SoCal car chases? That’s what a California Department of Fish and Game official told reporter Lee Cowan in a report aired today on CBS This Morning.

Although the analogy may be a bit of a stretch, there’s no denying the 15 minutes of furry fame achieved by “Meatball the Bear.” Very few mammals can lay claim to the #humblebrag of a thoughtful Charlie Rose intro (again, see above).

Billy Bob Thornton Refuses to Cave to Salacious Memoir Requests

For years, actor Billy Bob Thornton was approached by various parties looking to convince him to write a certain kind of memoir. But he had no real interest in writing an autobiography, let alone one that might rate as People’s juiciest.

However, as Thornton explained last night on Tavis Smiley, another rascally son of the American South finally convinced him to give the book-writing game a try. As a result, there is this month’s new release The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts:

“People have asked me for years to do it. But they want some gossipy celebrity book and I just wouldn’t do it. But [co-author] Kinky [Friedman] said, ‘Hey, why don’t you tell some of those funny stories about growing up and then give you a couple of chapters to gripe about how our society is crumbling, and, you know, we’ll go from there.’”

GM Delivers James Cameron to Nightline

Last night’s Bill Weir interview with James Cameron on Nightline wasn’t just the first on-camera look at the filmmaker’s 100-acre off-the-grid oceanfront compound north of Santa Barbara. It was also a fantastic commercial for the Chevy Volt, albeit engineered from a much broader initial segment blueprint.

“ABC News approached us a couple of months ago with the idea that they wanted to do a story on electric vehicles,” explains Rob Peterson, a spokesperson for Chevrolet Volt, on the phone with FishbowlLA from Detroit. “They asked us if there was a high-profile Volt owner we could recommend.”

“Mr. Cameron has been an advocate of plug-in hybrid vehicles for many years,” he continues. “We knew that he could be the right person for the story. We had a contact in California who could reach out to him and find out it was alright to put ABC News in touch. From that point forward, it was between Nightline and Cameron.”

Well, when the person behind it is Tom Hanks and the length of the weekly Wednesday online-only program is limited to a deliberately condensed six minutes, the answer to the above question can perhaps be yes. The first two episodes of The 3 Minute Talk Show with Barry Sobel debuted online today at LStudio.com, the online content venture from Lexus.

Fred Willard is the 3 Minute sidekick; stand-up Barry Sobel (who coached Hanks for the film Punchline) is the host; and producer Hanks, whose Playtone is underwriting, laughs it up as Guest #1:

Stand-up comedian and actor Kevin Pollak is quietly closing in on the 100th episode of Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show, his freewheeling online subversion of the Charlie Rose round table model. For an atypical, non-live audience Halloween edition, he sat down with actor Jason Alexander.

The conversation is peppered with all sorts of great Seinfeld reminiscences. Recalled Alexander:

“When we did the 100th episode, NBC printed up the original test group results, which were the worst in the history of network TV… There was actually a thing that said, ‘Too hip, too urban, too Jewish.’ And I said, ‘Was there a Kyke meter? Oh, oh, oh… We’re on the brink. Too much… Too Jew-y.’”

It’s Official: Newspaper People Don’t Have Any New/Viable Ideas

This is Charlie Rose‘s show about the future of newspapers.

Joining me now is Robert Thomson. He’s the managing editor of “The Wall Street Journal.” Also, Mort Zuckerman. He is owner and publisher of the New York “Daily News” and the editor in chief of “U.S. News & World Report,” a magazine he owns. With me in Washington is Walter Isaacson. He is president and CEO of the Aspen Institute. He’s also the author of this week’s cover story in “Time” magazine called, “How to Save Your Newspaper: A Modest Proposal.” I should also suggest that Walter was formerly the editor of “Time” magazine.

Walter Isaacson had a piece in Time, posted it on Huffington Post – now he’s on Charlie Rose and he’s yet to say anything interesting or helpful about the future of newspapers.

Part of the problem is that they collectively dismiss ‘bloggers’ as citizen journalists and think that their relationship is with only the reader. The fact is that blogs, you’re reading one now, should be the one’s asked to subscribe to newspapers. Like a wire service. They use the original reporting – why not financially contribute to it? It’s not going to solve everything…but it’s better than wishing ‘the iPod model’ will fly.

You can’t save print newspapers by only reading print newspapers.

Silverman Seems Locked In At NBC Universal: Times

Ben Silverman, the current co-CEO for NBC Universal who has been rumored for months to be getting the heave-ho, looks poised to re-up in his current power position, the L.A. Times claims.

On Thursday, NBC parent company General Electric Co. added Silverman to the board of the Peacock Equity Fund, a $250-million media investment vehicle owned by NBC Universal and GE Commercial Finance. Earlier in the week, Silverman sat across the table from interviewer-of-the-moguls Charlie Rose to hold forth on the future of digital entertainment, television and advertising.

And then there was a curious item on the New York Post’s Page Six last week that all but left bus tire treads on Katherine Pope, who runs NBC’s in-house TV studio, which produced the network’s failed series “My Own Worst Enemy.”

The item, which many in Hollywood speculated was spin to take the heat off Silverman, blamed Pope for NBC’s struggles in prime time.

Silverman has been engaged in negotiations for a new contract that would extend his tenure as co-chairman of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios beyond June, when his current contract expires. A person close to the situation says a deal could be reached by the end of the year.
