Meet THR.com’s New Style Editor

We can’t think of a more appropriate time for someone to start as style editor at a Hollywood publication than the week of the Oscars. Such is the case with Erin Weinger, who assumed her post this past Monday with the Web side of The Hollywood Reporter.

Weinger is reporting to culture editor Degen Pener and THR.com editor Chris Krewson. She comes to the trade from the firm of interior designer Kelly Wearstler, where she was the director of digital content for fashion. Prior to that, Weinger put together the kind of hybrid Web-print journalism resume that is “de rigueur” these days:

Following internships at Time Out Chicago and Angeleno magazine, her career in fashion writing began as a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times “Image” section, where she had a weekly column highlighting retail happenings in Los Angeles.

For Your Consideration: A Curiously Timed Pete Hammond-Deadline Item*

It’s been a while since there has been any real public skirmishing between The Hollywood Reporter and Nikki Finke‘s Deadline. But lo and behold, in this quietest of holiday weeks, another small chapter in the PMC-Prometheus rivalry is being written.

At issue is whether a 9:55 p.m. PST December 27 story by Deadline’s Pete Hammond about troubles with Academy member online voting had more than a little to do with a longer, more exhaustive 2:58 p.m. PST December 27 story about the same topic by THR‘s Scott Feinberg (headline displayed above). From our vantage point, it would certainly seem so.*

It looks as if, after the THR item hit, Hammond’s marching orders were to produce a version of his own, pronto. The shame of it is that an acknowledgment of the Feinberg piece in his post would have in no way denigrated the overall impact. In fact, it would have made for a more interesting Deadline item if Hammond had specifically bounced off the Hollywood Reporter article, challenging and contrasting what he has been hearing with what Feinberg reported.

Shira Lazar’s What’s Trending Goes Daily

Hollywood Reporter website editor Chris Krewson goes the extra mile this morning to populate his Internet station, reporting about today’s revamping of Web talk show What’s Trending from a weekly one-hour Wednesday operation to a Monday-to-Friday noon PT 20-minute endeavor.

Host Shira Lazar and business partner Damon Berger have been busy since launching in May 2011. As far as the big question – how does the show make money? – here is Krewson’s answer:

What’s Trending garners about 150,000 views per week on all its platforms, including YouTube. Revenue is drawn from advertising – What’s Trending has worked with AT&T, Samsung, Virgin America and Vizio – as well as syndication.

THR Grabs Variety.com Editor Chris Krewson

This one’s gotta hurt – big time – at the Variety end.

Ahead of the impending sale of Tinseltown’s second oldest trade, Web editor Chris Krewson has decided to head on up Wilshire Blvd. to perform the same duties for Variety’s revamped, slightly older competitor. He starts as THR.com editor tomorrow.

“Chris brings a strong news metabolism that will continue to drive growth at THR.com,” said editorial director Janice Min in this afternoon’s announcement. “As our digital footprint continues to grow, his contribution will be invaluable.”

Added Krewson: “I’m thrilled to be joining THR, especially at a time when the brand’s online presence is growing at an incredible pace as its digital properties expand each day.”

Much Ado About a Variety Retweet

Here’s a great example of just how ridiculous it can get sometimes on Twitter.

It started Wednesday when Variety film reporter Jeff Sneider retweeted an Entertainment Weekly TCA article about Alex Trebek. Although the headline should have ideally spelled it “Lede,” the word was listed as “Lead:”

Within a matter of minutes, Movies.com contributor Scott Weinberg and Badass Digest reporter Devin Faraci were getting on Sneider’s case for spelling it “Lead.” Variety editor Chris Krewson jumped to his colleague’s defense and soon, the Twitter mini-brawl was on:
