A compelling name and some equally compelling audio content. That’s the FishbowlLA boxscore for the first two innings of The Halo Effect, a brand new Los Angels Angels-focused podcast hosted by SoCal native Marty Keegan.

It starts with Keegan’s voice, a regal rasp that is one part Crispin Glover and many parts hubby of Rebecca, film writer for the Los Angeles Times. Then there’s Keegan’s wry sense of humor, fed by his experience as a stand-up comedian and one-time host of nowlive.com pop culture talk show Hollywood Babble-On.

In this week’s The Halo Effect episode, Keegan continues his conversation with former Angels pitching great Jim Abbott, author of the new book Imperfect. Among the topics covered are Abbott’s memories of late Angels owner Gene Autry:

“Mr. Autry was a sweet man, completely different from some of the other owners I’ve played for… He’d come down into the clubhouse and he’d look around. And no matter if we’d won or lost, he was always immaculately dressed in a western cowboy suit and hat, and a fresh pair of cowboy boots that were monogrammed with a G.A. Every single one of them. He always had a kind word and loved his ballplayers.”

Not So Funny: Comedian Ellen Degeneres is taking heat from WGA East for breaking ranks and pushing ahead with her show. Ellen is a member of both WGA and AFTRA and is one of the few daytime talk-shows to employ guild members. The WGA said: “We find it sad that Ellen spent an entire week crying and fighting for a dog that she gave away, yet she couldn’t even stand by writers for more than one day — writers who have helped make her extremely successful.” Ellen, who risks facing breach of contract issues if her syndicated show goes dark, is between a rock and a hard place — but the guild does have a point about that dog…

Done In By Grendel? It seems Crispin Glover lured reporter Chris Lee to his “gargoyle-laden Silver Lake home” under the false pretense that he was going to talk about Beowulf. Instead, Glover shut Lee in his bedroom and screened It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine, the film he co-directed, produced and edited that is about a cerebral palsy-afflicted serial killer who is irresistible to women. We’re guessing Lee made it out of there alive.

Everyone’s Talking About: Lowriders. (Well, everyone who isn’t talking about the strike.) The Petersen Automotive Museum is featuring an exhibit about lowriders, and it’s got Dan Neil all happy and waxing poetic: “The Petersen drops a splendid argument in favor of openness and acceptance right in the middle of America’s immigration debate.” We don’t see political statements on Buicks, but take Dan at his word.

Luke Thompson is willing to drive up from OC, where he’s working for the OC Weekly, and lets us in on his plans for the LA Film Festival.

My must-see section of the festival is always Darkwave. This year, they’ve got Crispin Glover starring in The Wizard of Gore, my friend Ti West’s second feature Trigger Man (his third will be the upcoming Cabin Fever 2), and some Russian film about drowned ghosts. I’ll be there for all three.
