As we mentioned earlier on the ‘bowl, film critics Alonso Duralde and Dave White lost their cars to the L.A. arsonist. The couple’s insurance didn’t cover the cost of replacing both vehicles, and film critics are chronically underpaid, so friends did some fundraising on their behalf.

Well, as of this past weekend, the fellas are carless no more! They’ve purchased a used Mazda to get them to all those film screenings.

Slake Reveals Preview of Issue 2

Since its second issue won’t be out in time for the holidays, Slake is offering a preview on its website. The mag has posted the story “An XXXmas Carol” by Dave White online for free.

Says Slake of its sudden decision to–partially–embrace free Internet model:

We know that some of you are heading home for the holidays. And while most of you will return with picture-perfect memories of time with the family, we also know that at least a few of you will experience all the classic angst associated with being the L.A. weirdo among a group of “normals.”

We devote Dave White’s “An XXXmas Carol,” Slake.la’s first online exclusive, to that latter group. Dave’s visit back to East Texas a few years ago might be an extreme example of holiday stress, but we’re sure many of you will be able to relate.
