There’s a brand new online women’s magazine in the Internet mix. It’s called DAME, was founded by publishing vet Jennifer Reitman, is aimed at the female over-30 crowd and counts as editor-in-chief Sanjiv Bhattacharya, former features editor for GQ UK.

Bhattacharya helps get it going with a snappy profile of Laura Wasser, the Century City denizen generally referred to as “Hollywood’s top celebrity divorce lawyer.” The label definitely fits:

Right now, Wasser has 35 active cases, allegedly including Laura Dern, Heidi Klum, Dennis Quaid and 80s saxophonist Kenny G (though Wasser herself won’t reveal any names). She even looks like a celebrity – the kind of lawyer that all those hot TV lawyers are based on. She’s smart, fast-talking, expensive (at up to $800 an hour) and in the words of the drooling producers at TMZ, “superfine.”

The remake appears to have slightly more hip-hop than the 1984 version:

The new Footloose stars Dennis Quaid as the preacher man, Julianne Hough of Dancing With the Stars as his daughter, and newcomer Kenny Wormald in the role made famous by Kevin Bacon. The film opens October 14.

Dennis Quaid is making a lot of media waves today with his cocaine confessional in Newsweek. As he should – it’s an incredibly candid first-person recollection of how he fell down the white-powder rabbit hole in 1974 and came up gasping for air in the late ’80s.

But the bigger picture is the recurring feature for which he wrote the piece. Launched in the March 14th issue, “My Favorite Mistake” is quickly turning out to be a highlight of Tina Brown‘s revamped Newsweek.

Pulitzer prize-winning reporter Charles Ornstein speaks to us about his story in today’s LAT which details yet another breach of confidentiality at UCLA Medical Center:

1. How did you get this story? Just as I was tipped off by a source about UCLA firing workers in the Britney Spears snooping, I similarly received a tip about the breach
involving Farrah Fawcett’s records. Her representatives confirmed the story and expressed concerns about the information being either leaked or sold to the tabloids. Public interest in medical privacy is increasing as more and more hospitals are moving toward fully electronic records. When readers hear about these celebrity cases, I think they wonder what’s being done to protect their confidential clinical information — whether about a life-threatening illness or a sexually transmitted disease.

2. How much did UCLA’s status as a public institution help? I don’t think UCLA’s status as a public institution affected this story one way or another. Dennis Quaid, whose babies received a drug overdose at Cedars-Sinai, told me that he believed there was a similar breach of his children’s records last year because the information appeared on TMZ before he had a chance to tell his family or friends.

Ultimately, the breaches become known to those affected by them. Hospitals across the country have been stung by revelations about
privacy breaches. In New Jersey, more than two dozen employees improperly accessed George Clooney’s records after a motorcyle accident last year. Before that, workers at another hospital tried to get into Bill Clinton’s records. Public or private, all hospitals are dealing with these issues.

Sinai Cited: The California Department of Public health cited Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the hospital was fined $25,000 for giving overdoses of a blood thinner to three babies, including the newborn twins of actor Dennis Quaid.

Can You Hear Me Now? L.A. developer Robert Maguire’s ex-wife testified that she paid Anthony Pellicano nearly $1 million to sleuth for clues to her estranged husband’s assets and “heard numerous wiretapped recordings of Maguire’s conversations with his psychiatrist, onetime mistress, world-famous architect Frank Gehry and others.”
