The name we were not completely familiar with – alongside those of Gustavo Arellano (OC Weekly), Matthew Belloni (THR), Gene Maddaus (LA Weekly) and Matthew Garrahan (Financial Times) – is U-T San Diego’s Fred Dickey (no relation to TMZ managing editor Josh). Even if this Dickey wins, he will still have a tough road to hoe in that department at home. According to his website bio, microbiologist wife Kathleen has lent her name to nine U.S. patents.

These are dark days for Patch, with a conference call last Friday as reported by Romenesko revealing more rough tactical agenda items. But here in SoCal, the sun is shining on Rancho Santa Margarita local editor Martin Henderson. He is nominated in this category together with Dennis Romero (LA Weekly), Dylan Howard (Celebuzz), Chris Hedges (Truthdig) and Catherine Green (Neon Tommy). This guy has paid his dues, winning his first journalism award in high school and starting at the LA Times all the way back in1990.

“I actually quit my job at LA Weekly at the beginning of October, but because I still had a couple print stories in the tubes, it took readers a while to notice I was gone,” Wilson tells FishbowlLA via email. “It was 100% my decision to leave. Management at the paper made it clear that they would have loved to have me stay.”

“But for health reasons (I have cystic fibrosis, and the 24/7 news grind was rough on me) and wanting-to-see-the-world reasons, it just felt like the right time to move on,” she adds. Another reason Wilson chose Tel Aviv is that her boyfriend’s family owns an apartment building there, making it very cost-efficient for them to relocate.

Last week, Wilson had a solid piece in the Jewish Journal about Israeli Army conscientious objector Natan Blanc. She plans to do more freelancing for the SoCal paper and has other outlets in her sights as well.

“I actually just spent about a month writing a story involving the recent Israel-Gaza conflict for a major U.S. magazine, but I’d rather not say who until it runs,” Wilson teases. “I’ll also be pitching stories to alternative magazines and other U.S./international outlets.”

Per a report by LA Weekly’s tireless crime tracker Dennis Romero, the incidents occurred within the space of a few months. The show’s broadcaster also allegedly has an idea of who might be responsible for the vandalism:

The same thing happened – the billboard was painted over – several months ago, says Global Voice Broadcasting (GVB). The company says the matter has been reported to the LAPD.

The billboard is at Beverly Boulevard and Formosa Avenue, near Hollywood. The broadcaster has a theory about who’s behind this, but it’s one that unsubstantiated and, thus, one we can’t repeat.

Just ahead of the 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games this weekend at the Home Depot Center, LA Weekly has published some absolutely disgusting Facebook photos shared by the the owner of the LA downtown end of the CrossFit operation. The pictures, which you’ll have to click through to see, feature in one case GymFit personnel gleefully standing above a homeless man passed out on a sidewalk.

LA Weekly editor-in-chief Sarah Fenske tells FishbowlLA that Maseng’s story started blowing up this morning around 9 a.m. PT, three hours after it was posted. “Right now we’re getting three times the normal traffic on laweekly.com, entirely thanks to that story.”

Gurman’s ability to publish scoop after Wall Street Journal-beating Apple scoop on the blog 9to5mac.com was first heralded this week by CNN Money/Fortune magazine. From there, he has been trumpeted by The Huffington Post, NBC Southern California, LA Weekly and The Daily Mail. With more dings sure to follow.

Our favorite perspective on what this all means for Gurman comes from LA Weekly’s Dennis Romero. At the very end of the piece, the reporter wonders if the newly anointed blogging star might continue down this path professionally:

Min’s statements left many local journos rolling their eyes. “Gee, sorry we letcha down, Janice,” tweeted Jon Weisman of Variety.com. “That’s Minsanity,” quipped David Young of True Blue LA. LA Weekly‘s Dennis Romero called Min’s remarks B.S. “Tons of great journalists in this market,” he said.

In his piece, Romero noted that the event lacked proper permitting for a concert performance and also questioned the happening’s confusing connection to the broader Occupy movement. Supporters of PE front man Chuck D, as well as D himself, did not take kindly to the tone of the article. This afternoon, after six updates to the original article, various reader comments and some angry back-and-forth tweets, Romero sums up the brouhaha that ensued and this final Twitter volley:

After Chuck D accused me of being a tool of corporate media, I had to point out that he had hired a lying corporate publicist and is, as far as we can tell, a member of the so-called 1 percent of American income-earners that are the ire of the Occupy nation.

When City News Service reporter Calvin Milam was arrested while covering the LAPD crackdown on OccupyLA earlier this month, police initially told LA Weekly’s Dennis Romero that Milam had been drunk and failed to identify himself as a journalist As you can see from this video, however, shot by Alex Mannone of The Occupied Venice Journal, Milam appears perfectly sober and clearly presents his press pass to officers prior to his arrest. The City Maven did some digging and found out that, since the official story and the video are so at odds, Milam’s case has been referred to LAPD internal affairs.

Milam was forced to post a $5,000 bond for attempting to cover the crackdown, and has an arraignment hearing scheduled on Jan. 6, 2012.

Disgraced former LA Times investigative reporter Chuck Philips (pictured), who took a buyout not long after the paper retracted his March 2008 story about Tupac Shakur because fake FBI documents were sourced, suggests that recent remarks made by his formerly anonymous story source prove that he merits not just an apology but also a new, front-page retraction of the paper’s previous retraction:

“I want them to run a front-page retraction,” Philips tells LA Weekly. “Same size, same place.”

Romero, who describes himself as “half-Mexican” and notes that about half of those in LA county have some sort of south-of-the-border ancestry, highlights the finding that 6.8% of LA Times staff is Hispanic. He also makes good use of his CCNMA: Latino Journalists of California board membership, sourcing the organization’s executive director Julio Moran for a quick take:

“It is frustrating to see that for the third straight year, the percentage of journalists of color in newsrooms across the country has dropped while the overall percentage of the population in the country continues to grow… Our nation’s newsrooms need to reflect the diversity of the communities they cover.”

That same day, The Business Insider shared a long and very detailed look at what’s been going with the online local news venture, including some notably forthright let’s-nip-this-in-the-bud reaction comments from Iamunno.

Separately, LA Weekly reporter Dennis Romero – to his credit – took time to comment on our aforementioned October 12th item, right around the time that his newest broadside against Patch was hitting the airwaves. Under the expanded headline Did AOL’s Patch Take Content Again – This Time from an NBC Los Angeles Story About Sand Replenishment in Venice?, Romero examined whether or not the publication of a City News Service (CNS) piece under the byline of Venice Patch local editor Samantha Page may have constituted plagiarism.
